Just spoke to the NAACP about criminal justice reform, something many broadly agree on. Some stats:

In 1980, there were 500,000 people in American jails. Today, there are 2.2 million. Many belong. But too many are nonviolent offenders.

The $80 billion we spend each year to keep people incarcerated could pay for universal pre-K for every 3-year-old and 4-year-old in America.

The $80 billion we spend each year on incarcerations could double the salary of every high school teacher in America.

We could eliminate tuition at every public college and university in America with the $80 billion we spend each year on incarcerations.

Mass incarceration doesn't work. Let's build communities that give kids a shot at success and prisons that prepare people for a 2nd chance.

Pluto just had its first visitor! Thanks @NASA - it's a great day for discovery and American leadership. http://t.co/FfztBSMbK0

Good evening TOD folks!
You can’t beat numbers. So excited that Pluto is revealed at last.
Good Evening vetivera! I’m sceered! It’s windy, lighting and the worst, lightning. Trying out the new Thundershirt on my little dog Sammy. He hates the wind and storms too. Hope the weather is better where you are!
Congratulations on First!
Do those Thundershirts really work? Stay away from windows.
Thanks Carol. In fact it was pretty bad here too. Not just the rain but it was cold. Hope it passed over
It blew over really fast for a storm. Thank goodness. It’s a beautiful morning now.
Yes here too
Congrats vetivera :)
Excellent recap, NW, as always!! TY!!
:)
NW, you are the best. You keep us informed, and I thank you.
Awwww…that’s very kind.
Thanks so much, Rikyrah. :)

Thank you for this, Nerdy:)
And on the eve of Jade Helm… https://twitter.com/marylynne1/status/621153716406759424
Ben Rhodes is on Charlie Rose and he is blowing my mind. What a command of all the details, wow.
And as for twitter, XKCD has it covered. https://twitter.com/marylynne1/status/621155978818494465
Meant to say “Pluto”, not “twitter”. Hmmm….time for bed!
screw neil degrasse tyson for being a part of that crowd. pluto is my planet.
Amk-men!!! Pluto guards the secrets of the Universe from the tiny mind of man. If only they would tell us the truth of what they are really seeing out there - pretty sure all our ‘energy’ problems would be over… eff’ing BigOil runs the world economy, at the risk of destroying the jewel that is Earth.
We don’t even need BigOil, or natural gas, or nuclear energy, or any of that toxic stuff: There is PROOF! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Meyer%27s_water_fuel_cell
Anyway. I’m outta here. Way too busy for my liking, and very tired. Will be back, someday. <3 Big hugs all around, so much to celebrate.
That’s hysterical, amk!
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider have announced the discovery of a new particle called the pentaquark.
It was first predicted to exist in the 1960s but, much like the Higgs boson particle before it, the pentaquark eluded science for decades until its detection at the LHC.
The discovery, which amounts to a new form of matter, was made by the Hadron Collider’s LHCb experiment.
The findings have been submitted to the journal Physical Review Letters.
///
Previous experiments had measured only the so-called mass distribution where a statistical peak may appear against the background “noise” - the possible signature of a novel particle.
But the collider enabled researchers to look at the data from additional perspectives, namely the four angles defined by the different directions of travel taken by particles within LHCb.
“We are transforming this problem from a one-dimensional to a five dimensional one… we are able to describe everything that happens in the decay,” said Dr Koppenburg who first saw a signal begin to emerge in 2012.
“There is no way that what we see could be due to something else other than the addition of a new particle that was not observed before.”

Fascinating. The Large Hadron Collider has proven to be a good investment for scientific discovery.
I’m terrified of that Collider.
Actually, I dropped in to remark we have a New Moon occurring as well: Wednesday 15 July 2015, Moon conjunct Sun at 23.14 Cancer, 9:24pm EDT, 6:24pm PDT. And that, plus the energy generated by all the Obama Administration is achieving, makes for an exciting turn in the summer. Or winter, as the case may be, in the Southern Hemisphere! <3 {{{{{ TOD }}}}}
Sounds good. I think. I never really know, but I take everything as “a good sign.” Ha! Hugs to you, MightyPamela!
why are you surprised that “I” am taking credit for the Iranian Deal?
remember when I tried to convince you that I and my offspring was shot at in the war zone - if only that tape didn’t exist!!!!
gcl…are you practicing for TOD Halloween??? :) :)
I finally got it! :)

I don’t want to just end the war, but I want to end the mindset that got us into war in the first place.” That was Senator Barack Obama, speaking about Iraq in a 2008 primary debate. For a candidate who had seen his own campaign surge on the strength of his opposition to the Iraq war, it was a near-perfect distillation of the change he hoped to bring to America’s foreign policy discussion, long dominated by hawkish views that were shattering against the bloody reality of Iraq’s civil war.

Frankly, if there were any justice, we would be seeing an outbreak of “Support Our Diplomats” bumper stickers. Americans rightly honor those who defend our security with military strength, and it’s time to accord the same to those who do it through effective and painstaking diplomacy.
You betcha! I’ll toast to that!
and where can we get these ‘support our diplomats’ bumper stickers? i’ll take a dozen, please. :)
Interesting background piece.
Interesting story…thanks:)
thanks for this link, meta. there is so much on the web right now, and yet very little i want to actually read… not to mention the vile comments. i have tremendous respect for sec kerry, and was devastated when his shot at the presidency was deflected by the right’s odious lies about his service. what a triumph, for him to be so central to this historic diplomatic endeavor!
Night everyone…
Good evening TOD! What a day! From the announcement early morning to the speech on reforming our criminal justice system and finally to the interview PBO gave to Tom Friedman. It was particularly interesting to me because I had just watched again the discussion between these two back in April after the framework agreement. Honestly I cannot imagine any candidate on either side of the aisle having this discussion at this level of knowledge and nuance. I wonder if Tom Friedman is aware that he has had a once in a lifetime experience for his career. We are sooooo spoiled with PBO’s eloquence, grasp of history, knowledge and strategic thinking. I certainly will not live long enough to see another president that even begins to measure up to him. For the hopes and dreams I invested in him and his campaign in 2008, he consistently has exceeded every expectation I ever had and more. When I hear people dismiss him and his accomplishments, I can only look at them with wonder and feel sorry for them that they have so little knowledge. But on this deal I suspect he has a ton of support even amongst Rs in the general population outside Washington.
In any event, as always so happy to have this place to come to on days like today. THANK YOU to all who contribute here, and particulalry Chips and NW. You are the BEST!
^^^ THIS!!!
JOB, saw the news about your son on my way out the door and didn’t get back for awhile. So thrilled for both of you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Oh Happy Day!
And Goodnight to ya!

Agree, 100%, Foxfire!
Barely 4h sleep in the past ~ 48h so I’m off to bed rather early …..
Would really appreciate all of you, lurkers included, voicing displeasure at the 1p ET time of the Iran Deal presser. I think it is a very big mistake.
Now taking it to VP Biden … never done this before, but I think it is a major strategic error.
good night TOD …………….
Damn WP
Damn good day. Hallelujah! Keep on pushin’!
GM where is everyone? Had a busy two days huh, time to rest up. LOL.
I’m here, Roberta. There’s no time to rest up at TOD as long as our President keeps batting it out of the park every day with new, exciting world changing ideas.
Morning!
