    ==============================

Iran deal is a historic opportunity

By Sen. Martin Heinrich / Democrat, New Mexico

“While the military option will always remain on the table, it should remain our absolute last resort. Our military and intelligence leaders have looked at the potential repercussions should a military conflict with Iran occur. That path would provoke retaliation and very likely lead to a nuclear armed Iran in a matter of just a few years.

For too long, our country has been engaged in military conflicts that have cost our nation dearly in blood and treasure. We must always be ready at a moment’s notice to defend our country, our allies and our interests, but we must also be willing to avoid conflict whenever a diplomatic option is present and possible.

I am optimistic this accord is in the best interest of our nation and our allies. I am still deeply distrustful of Iran’s leadership. But, to make peace, you must negotiate with your enemies.

Any deal with Iran will not be without risk, but the risks associated with inaction are far more dire. This deal sets the stage for a safer and more stable Middle East, and a more secure United States. We must seize this historic opportunity. ”

Congressman Larson is a damned fool. I hope Nancy P tells him what he can do with his resolution. Sen. Heinrich probably had the good sense to read the document or at least listen to the testimony. I hope he collars a good number of his colleagues and pushes some sound judgment at them.

Contrasting this with the Dubose murder (which I couldn’t bring myself to watch), these guys are fortunate the cops didn’t shoot them and make up their own version. Who knows, these two here having gotten the better of him a year ago, and maybe many others in the interim, might have unknowingly laid the groundwork for the officer’s murderous response to Mr. Dubose. Awful that police are so pumped on their power they’d take the time to harass citizens to feed their sense of superiority. I can’t think of one of these highlighted cases that show them even remotely serving and protecting anyone before the fatal incident!

The Count is losing his counting abilities. Truman received his card in 1965, not 1966.

Harry Truman received the first Medicare card ever issued at age 81 on July 30, 1965. Truman had called for a national health insurance program in 1945 – and 20 years later, Lyndon B. Johnson personally handed him the card. http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2015/02/15/15-Presidential-Facts-You-Never-Knew#sthash.LGU4otb2.dpuf

Pf, I like the title and the idea behind this article but here’s my initial reaction in two parts:-

      1. Cain spent far too much time and detail on the Republicans
      2. He was too vague re PBO’s accomplishments.

After all, the article is supposed to be about PBO! Cain might have stated ….

“The contrast is stark. President Obama runs circles around them.”

……. but to my mind he sure didn’t show that. If I were grading his essay, ;) ;) I’d have to tell him he placed his emphasis in the wrong areas.

i see your point but i think his point was made that despite all that the President was able to accomplish many things

        • 49 vcprezofan2
          July 30, 2025 at 1:30 pm

:D I did get his point; however, I think he threw away an opportunity to tout some of the President’s (not the Republicans’) *specific* ‘many things’ to a wider audience. We here all know all that is implied behind his brief hints, but after reading his title, I had anticipated him spelling out several for the general readership. I felt disappointed that he didn’t. Also too, I didn’t actually check it but my gut feeling is that he spent more time on the Republicans in an article that was meant to highlight PBO.

NP - his intent was good.

As many of you know, Firedoglake has been on hiatus for eight months while I recovered from hip replacement surgery. During that time I’ve been contemplating what the next chapter should be for the website. After some personal reflection, I have decided to pass the torch on to Kevin Gosztola and Brian Sonenstein, who will launch their own media organization called Shadowproof that will build on the success of FDL.

Kevin, who has continued to publish to FDL during hiatus, will be the organization’s Managing Editor. You might know him from the work he has done covering Chelsea Manning, John Kiriakou, and other whistleblower cases. His Dissenter column was an enormous success at FDL, and he will continue to publish the column at Shadowproof.

Since coming on four months ago, relatively new NBC News Chief Andy Lack is obviously making his presence felt. Ratings are in the toilet…it somehow finished 5th in a four-horse race recently. Staffers and talent are walking on eggshells. And unless your last name is Matthews, Maddow or your first name Joe or Mika, nobody appears safe, as Mediaite’s Andrew Kirell reported exclusively earlier this week.

Once self-dubbed The Place for Politics, MSNBC goes back to its 1996 roots: More news, less talk.

The Amer ppl by large margins do not want another war in the Middle East. Even with all the sabotage and propaganda by the media, when the #IranDeal is explained large marjorities of Americans and American Jews favor it.

The American people are not the problem. The problem is that AIPAC has purchased a large number of our congressmen and these traitorous congressmen reflect the views of Israel, not their constituents. The American public receives no AIPAC money and is. not willing to volunteer U.S. lives and treasure for Israel’s benefit. Unbiased polling reflects this fact.

To have a Functional Gov’t……..there are No Differences. An engaged Electorate would know this……..Politics 101.
In USA, We The People are fond of making excuses and then, as in 1994, 2010 and 2014……..turn around and Blame the Slowness of getting things done on Clinton or on Pres Obama. It takes We The People to get the elected Officers We want …..who Must Do the Right Things.

I am well aware when elections occur. I am also aware that Dems historically don’t vote in midterm elections. Merely pointing out the reality of the situation to highlight my point that a strategy that worked during a midterm election would not work during a Presidential election year due to the difference in the size and make up of the voting pool. I agree that Dems should vote in every election.

Gov’t is funded until Oct. 1. 2015. I don’t think the GOP wants to shut down the gov’t that close to a Presidential election. Escalating the war on women’s reproductive rights will definitely galvanize women to HRC, so even if they are stupid enough to shut down the gov’t over Planned Parenthood funding, it is a strategic folly. Presidential elections differ vastly from midterm elections, so there would be a price to pay for the foolishness (larger voting pool and folks will be paying attention). GOP inability to govern is a liability during Presidential election because the GOP base is not large enough to win Presidential election by itself (unlike midterm elections where Dem voters historically do not participate).
