Judith, do you think there were 28,000 people to hear the BS in Portland the other day?? I am being skewered as a liar over on the stupider than ever FB, for saying I’d read 8,000. Some really sick people spewing hate already.. this could get ugly and it’s only 2015!

Yes, MP, there were 19,000 seated in the Moda Center and 9,000 more who didn’t fit in who watched on auxiliary screens. Almost all of them were white, but Bernie did have his new AA communications director start off the event by speaking about the need to listen to BLM. I did not attend but had a couple of friends who did. They are getting false hope that Bernie is a viable nominee from big crowds in far lefty places on the West Coast. In my humble opinion, Bernie cannot and doesn’t care to re-activate the Obama coalition by respecting and supporting all that our President has achieved. We know from the midterms that when candidates distance themselves from PBO, they usually lose. We cannot afford to lose the White House.

          • August 12, 2025 at 8:37 pm

Then Senator Obama commanded a crowd of 75,000 folks from every race, and background possible…..Bernie seems to be attracting just a small portion of that elector….Senator Obama’s/President Obama’s rallies were and are always very diverse….Bernie ain’t got that at all. I do not see Me in his audience!!!!

Furthermore, everything he says is alresdy part of the Democratic platform, I think, in one way or another. Here is an interesting article by Nate Silver: http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/the-bernie-sanders-surge-appears-to-be-over/

            And this one: http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/what-to-make-of-the-bernie-sanders-surge/

Silver seems to be pro-Clinton, but I think his analysis of what is going on is good.

        TY VC.

Daily we are seeing, from many dimensions, the realization that #DiplomacyHasConsequences in substantive, positive developments.

What far to many Americans have failed to grasp is that President Rouhani was elected not by a pack of warmongers but by a population, largely young, that wants peace and an opportunity to thrive - not die on some battlefield or be blown out of bed as happened to hundreds and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis.

Would Chuck Schumer have put himself out in front against the Iran Deal if he didn’t think He Had the votes?
      Honest question.
We are all assuming that we will get the 34 Senate yes votes we need to sustain PBO’s veto.
      Chuck is in the Senate.
Does he have no votes locked up that we don’t know about?

      • 47 Bobfr (@Our4thEstate)
        August 12, 2025 at 6:34 pm

2 things Vicki - both Dem and GOP Senators have stated publicly in the past few days that a veto will be sustained, moreover I don’t think Chuckie or anyone else in the Senate anticipated the blow-back he’s been getting, 24/7 with no sign of abating, since he announced his decision during Thursday evening’s GOP debate.

That blow-back will intensify as more and more actual experts, military leaders, members of the Jewish community - US, Israeli, Iranian - speak out between now and the time of the initial vote.

It’s up to us to do all we can to bring the heat … bbl ….

Before departing, I should also note the reality that the sanction regime is already disintegrating.

So, by Sept Senate/House vote time the choice is going to be:

          1 enable Iran to fast track to a bomb with no sanction regime;

2 or implement & rigorously enforce the Joint Plan of Action signed by P5+1 and Iran in July.

          It really is that straightforward.

      • 50 Linda
        August 12, 2025 at 6:39 pm

Only one side of Congress has to sustain the veto and Nancy Pelosi said she has the votes.

If the House holds, the Senate won’t matter.

  11. 53 Bobfr (@Our4thEstate)
    August 12, 2025 at 6:30 pm

“Retired Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Stephen Cheney, CEO of the American Security Project, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, disagreed that a nuclear-free U.K. would damage the country’s standing among NATO allies.

“I don’t think it would change it one bit. Not in the least. We’re all NATO allies. We all deploy together, we all go to Iraq, Afghanistan,” he said. “The fact that you don’t have a [nuclear] submarine … won’t make a bit of difference.”

Cheney called the Trident program “an absolute waste of money” and said funds allocated toward it could be better used for other government programs.

“The chances of Great Britain ever using those nuclear weapons are zero, and for them to go through the inordinate expense of maintaining them, fleeting them, putting them out to sea, it’s just ridiculous,” he said. “Who are they deterring? The Russians? I don’t think the Russians have any designs on Great Britain. The Chinese? I don’t think so. The French? Israel? India? Pakistan?””

As you will read in the article, the SNP are definitely rocking the boat ….

    • 54 Vicki
      August 12, 2025 at 8:00 pm

Getting rid of Trident was one of the 2 top planks of the SNP. The other was ending austerity. Not surprising they won 56 out of 59 seats in Parliament.

We have progressive thinking leaders here in California. Look what the Mayor of LA is trying…

Black-balled: LA tries spherical scheme to block evaporation amid drought
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/08/12/black-balled-la-tries-spherical-scheme-to-block-evaporation-amid-drought/
Is a bevy of black balls – 96 million to be exact – a crucial solution in helping California manage its calamitous drought?

On Monday, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti deployed the final 20,000 of the 96 million “shade balls” onto the surface of the city’s 175-acre, Sylmar-based reservoir, completing the final stage of the $34.5 million Los Angeles Department of Water (LADWP) attempt to protect the region’s water quality.

“In the midst of California’s historic drought, it takes bold ingenuity to maximize my goals for water conservation,” Garcetti said, claiming that the initiative saves taxpayers millions. “This effort is emblematic of the kind of the creative thinking we need to meet those challenges.”

“Low-tech solutions to saving water can be just as effective as more complex ones.”

    - Caitrin Phillips Chappelle, Public Policy Institute of California
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the first utility company to utilize such technology for water quality protection. Officals claim the small, plastic balls will save 300 million gallons of water from evaporating annually, stemming about 90 percent of the losses that occur through the natural process.

Maybe they should get going - REALLY FAST - on the seawater desalination plants, 24/7, full workforce, shifts all day and all night. The sooner the better. Plastic balls, as if we don’t have enough plastic waste out in the oceans of the planet.

That’s it folks. That’s the only real decision the Senate & House get to make. Everything else is ‘hot air’ almost entirely due to the fact that the fella who led the most complex and successful diplomatic negotiation and successful outcome happens to be BLACK.

    http://www.alternet.org/environment/beyond-unacceptable-judge-oks-uranium-mine-grand-canyon

In June, the Grand Canyon was named one of the “Most Endangered Places” in America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. But the designation came just two months too late to possibly influence U.S. District Court Judge David Campbell. In April, he denied a request by the Havasupai tribe and a coalition of conservation groups to halt new uranium mining next to Grand Canyon National Park, just six miles from the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.

It will never be the same again…bit by bit, they will ruin this Natural Wonder of the World….
