i would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the Secret Service meeting that was held just after PBO told them that he wanted to hike and “Run Wild with Bear Grylls.” This president and First Family who insist on living their lives to the fullest possible have shaken up the SS and made them think out of the box when it comes to protecting a modern couple and their lively young daughters. Nothing about the Obamas is business as usual.

Meta reported on previous thread that Chris Coons officially endorsed VP Biden’s candidacy.
Stephen Colbert announced that VPOTUS will be joining him on Sept. 10.
Senate votes #33 and #34 are in. We wait for one more to veto upheld and then to 41 to avoid a Senate vote.
    What a good day!

Yes, the house will pass a negative vote. Idiotic and impotent as always.
Just like they voted to defund Obamacare 50+ times. Meaningless.

In any case, the issue will be over with on September 17 when the clock runs out.

These Alaskan adventure photos are spectacular! Noting the intersection between climate change and Iran Deal, Ambassador Samantha Power has urged Congress not to undermine US credibility with our allies on both of these issues. Sent tweets to all remaining Senate Democratic holdouts pointing this out, e.g.

So, after Dudette mentioned “Concussion” by sharing that trailer, I noticed that it was based on a true story and looked further - O, the google, she is so helpful. Anyhoo, I found this video of an interview with the doctor in question (Dr. Bennet Omalu) and have been watching it since. If you have the time, It is quite interesting (though I find the way the doctor laughs at odd points somewhat…odd - must be nervousness).
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The next question was, where do I publish this paper? During my research I had found out that the NFL, Dr. [Paul] Tagliabue, the then-NFL commissioner, when people like Troy was his first name again, several players had retired —

    Aikman. Troy Aikman?

I think Troy Aikman. There was another one that retired in the ’80s.

    Steve Young?

The other one was Merril Hoge and some other players who retired prematurely because of concussions, so-called concussions. So they set up a committee to look into the issue of concussions, what is going on. …

They had published most of their papers in the Neurosurgery journal. Because I thought this was something that had some value that will enhance the game, I said: “OK, let me take it to their home turf. Let me take this paper to the Neurosurgery journal and publish it in the NFL-endorsed journal.” …

When you submit a paper to a journal, the standard practice is they will send it to two reviewers who will review it. If the two reviewers agree this is a good paper, it’s published. They’ll make some comments, make some changes. Assuming the two reviewers disagree, it’s sent to a third reviewer who will now come, so if it’s two-to-one, OK. Do you know the number of people that reviewed this paper? There were over 18. …

It was Roger Staubach who retired early in the 80s on medical advice because of multiple concussions.

If you have time, the interview is interesting. What Dr. Omalu reveals about the response to his work is not ‘new’ or unexpected, but for me it was informative. Though I had heard some of the concussion discussion and seen (here in TODland) the tweet of the young man who chose to retire after 1 season or so, I had never heard of the doctor before.

Same here, vc! I think this movie is going to bring a major paradigm shift. So glad the doctor’s story is being told.

another part of the interview. I like the notion of service to others over selfish garnering of as many millions as you can.

            /////
            Interviewer: Why, Dr. Omalu?

Dr. Omalu: Remember the promise I made to Mike Webster? Another person I made a promise to was Chris Benoit, the wrestler.

I have a total of — I can’t remember — is it eight or seven certifications and degrees? And I remember when I was going to business school my father now said to me:

“Bennet, yes, I encouraged you to become educated, but why all this education? Why are you doing it? What is your motive? What I want to tell you, if your motive is for selfish reasons to become domineering all over the world, then I must warn you that is dangerous, but if your motive is to use your knowledge to help other people, to enhance the lives of other people, make a difference in the lives of other people, then it is good.” OK?

And again, my younger sister who has a Ph.D. in energy, international energy law, when I was fighting the battle of Mike Webster, I called and I said: “You know what? I’m getting tired.” And she called me out immediately and said, “No, Bennet.” She is religious, too. She said: “You think it’s by chance that this is happening. Everybody has a calling, that the mighty God -” we are Christians — “doesn’t give you a cross to bear by reckless abandon. He gives you a cross to bear because he knows you can bear that cross. With your knowledge, you can help these people, and you’re even in a better position because you don’t have any direct or indirect emotional attachment to football.”

At a couple of points later in the interview he did say that he wished he had not ‘met’ Mike Webster because of the resulting turmoil his discovery brought to his life. [Part of me is thinking I’m glad now that offspring wasn’t interested in team sports.]

I like this comment on YouTube under the video. It’s from 5 months ago.

“I think internationally speaking Obama is well-liked and respected. I find it irritating when Americans attack a guy who is trying to improve the social care for Americans and trying to reverse 8 damaging years of George Bush jnr who destroyed the American economy. Obama has spent a lot of his time reversing this damage and I think Americans need to understand how bad for America the republicans are. They not only destroyed the surplus, but they also damaged international relations to such an extent that America is still picking up the pieces today. I think history will be kinder and on reflection America may consider Barack Obama as one of America’s finest ever presidents. He’s bloody funny as well.”

Blessing to you dear Sue. You are such an inspiration to me. Thank you. Sue, I was out with my Healthcare Giver running some errands, and we passed one of the local high schools as the students were getting out of school, and all I could think of was what are those who oppose Climate Change will damage these precious lives. It breaks my heart to see what and where those who fight the president and his administration on this issue and other issues. However, we here at TOD can say that we gave our all in our support and work for the future of these precious lives.HZ
