Morning Chips and TODers. Who wouldn’t love a man who takes so much joy in babies, kids and puppies and also happens to be the most brilliant and effective leader in the world. I truly pity anyone who tries to fill his shoes.

This is all kinds of precious. PBO showed such respect ad love by going all in and actually being a part of the community while he was there. I know that this meant so much to all of the communities he visited. He brought himself as well as the more tangible help and investment from the various governmental agencies that he oversees. He let the people know that they ARE American citizens and that he IS their president.

Good Thursday morning everyone:) PBO with puppies:) I’ll join the pile if jellied legged TOD’ers! More than sweet… Today is my son’s 21st birthday. He’s excited…seems like just yesterday that he came into the world..my little boy is now an adult. True of it all, I think he’s been an adult for some time. Wise beyond his years and more mature than me, half the time. So blessed that he’s my son. Family’s going out to eat together….and the obligatory drink :)

Meantime, I have to work…and watch to see if the rest of the Dems join the right side of history today. So many thanks to go around for all the hard workers in this Administration and this President…never slowing down for the people. I feel love this morning.

Well, Rikyrah, one thing I never saw in school was a calculator or a computer. In the olden days, the math whizes had slide rulers. Can’t remember seeing a tv set in a classroom either. http://www.12news.com/story/news/politics/2015/09/02/papal-mass-washington-spanish/71580850/

When Pope Francis celebrates a canonization Mass for a Spanish-American missionary in Washington this month, he will do so in a language that the new saint, Junípero Serra, would recognize: Spanish.

There’s a number of reasons for that, said Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington who will be hosting the pope on the Washington leg of his three-city U.S. visit later this month.

First, Spanish is the pope’s mother tongue; he was born in Argentina.

“But it’s also a recognition of how large the Hispanic population in the United States is,” Wuerl said. “And also because he is canonizing a Spanish speaker. And he’s coming as the first pope from the New World, and the language, the predominant language of the Western Hemisphere, is Spanish.”

    • 64 jackiegrumbacher
      September 3, 2025 at 9:22 am

Pope Francis just keeps bringing it. I think this is a wonderful tribute to the growing Latino/Hispanic people in the US. Love the idea that the predominant language of the western hemisphere is Spanish. US centric nutjobs will have hard time coping with that reality.,

Hungary has decided the refugees are ” economic migrants ” so they can stop them from crossing their borders.

    • 72 jackiegrumbacher
      September 3, 2025 at 9:24 am

How very charitable and caring of the Hungarians to find a way to “exclude” those who need a home. I guess the concept of “doing unto others as you would have done unto you” eludes them.

    • 73 desertflower
      September 3, 2025 at 9:33 am

Gee…maybe they “forgot” about this! They were given refuge, but now refuse others?

      http://www.unhcr.org/452665e92.html

As 23 October progressed, tens of thousands of people poured on to the street – and the initial demonstration very quickly turned into something else altogether: a full-scale revolt against the regime and its Soviet masters.

Twelve days later on, on 4 November, the Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest. The city endured days of heavy shelling and street battles, and Hungarians started to flee at the rate of thousands a day to neighbouring Austria. By the time the borders were fully sealed, some 180,000 Hungarian refugees had made their way to Austria and 20,000 had headed south into Yugoslavia.

Within days of the exodus starting, an extraordinary operation sprang up in Austria, not only to care for the refugees, but to move them out of the country almost as fast as they arrived. In the end, 180,000 were resettled from Austria and Yugoslavia to a total of 37 different countries – the first 100,000 of them in under ten weeks. The performance of the Austrians, the aid agencies and the resettlement countries was truly remarkable.

The 1956 uprising and its aftermath helped shape the way humanitarian organizations – not least UNHCR – were to deal with refugee crises for decades to come. The episode also left an indelible mark on international refugee law and policy.

But the people it marked most of all were, of course, the Hungarians themselves – both those who stayed and those who left. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution, Refugees magazine has interviewed seven Hungarian refugees who subsequently settled in seven far-flung foreign lands.

Sound somewhat like the GOP - and many in my country - it seems we go to war/drop bombs and create thousands of refugees but then want to send them back to their war torn countries. So pleased PBO (and Europe) do not want to create the same situation in Iran.

    September 3, 2025 at 9:23 am

    Good morning, everyone.
PBO flew all night. I am always glad when he arrives safely home. This trip was an absolute smashing hit. POTUS looked so happy the entire time. And the laugh he got with the over-excited fish was wonderful to see.

Now back home to the insane congress and their repulsive lies.

And eventually, maybe?, a victory lap when the Iran deal is where the President wants it to be. We know by the numbers that the deal is done. When President Obama signals the deal is done in his eyes, too, perhaps we will have a speech or a celebration of some kind. If not it will be because PBO doesn’t want to rub their loss in GOP faces. PBO is kind that way.
    Me, not so much.

    • 76 jackiegrumbacher
      September 3, 2025 at 9:27 am

I don’t feel very kind, either, Vicki, but I think that our President has so many fish yet to fry (not over excited salmon) that he’s going to be very cautious about victory laps. He doesn’t want a government shutdown this fall and he’s got projects we wants completed, so he will continue to maintain careful, non antagonistic relations with Congress, unless they deliberately try to sabotage him and the country on the budget.

I just wanna ask…..how come every article the NYTimes is doing on Detroit involves White People?
    ………………….

Last Stop on the L Train: Detroit
    By JENNIFER CONLINJULY 10, 2015

Detroit, Just West of Bushwick,” read the first billboard that popped up in Bushwick, Brooklyn, this spring, with a working class scene from one of Diego Rivera’s “Detroit Industry” murals. “Detroit, Be Left Alone,” a second one preached soon after, again in Bushwick. And then a third sign appeared, in two locations in Brooklyn and two in Manhattan — “Detroit: Now Hiring.”

No one quite knew where they were coming from or who had put them up.

But when an unrelated photo popped up on Instagram — “Move to Detroit” spray-painted on a girder of the Brooklyn Bridge — the campaign’s anonymous crusader finally revealed himself.

“I rent billboard spaces where others don’t see value. That is how I saw Detroit on my first visit four years ago,” said Philip Kafka, the 28-year-old man who then put his passion behind the billboards with his SoHo-based company, Prince Media. “I saw great buildings, a deep and rich cultural history, and met amazing people.”

He now owns six buildings in the Motor City, one of which will house his new restaurant, Katoi, across the street from Detroit’s most photographed “ruin porn,” the Michigan Central Station. “I want people to know that in Detroit you can afford to make art, be a chef, buy houses, start a business, do anything if you work hard,” he said.

Gentrification’s insidious violence: The truth about American cities
Too many claim white people are at risk in communities of color. Really, it’s those communities that are threatened
    DANIEL JOSÉ OLDER

A few years back, when I was still a paramedic, we picked up a white guy who had been pistol whipped during a home invasion in Williamsburg. “I can’t believe this happened to me,” he moaned, applying the ice pack I’d given him to a small laceration on his temple. “It’s like a movie!”

    Indeed.

While film narratives of white folks in low-income neighborhoods tend to focus on how endangered they are by a gangland black or brown menace, this patient was singular in that he was literally the only victim of black on white violence I encountered in my entire 10-year career as a medic.

“What is distinctively ‘American’ is not necessarily the amount or kind of violence that characterizes our history,” Richard Slotkin writes, “but the mythic significance we have assigned to the kinds of violence we have actually experienced, the forms of symbolic violence we imagine or invent, and the political uses to which we put that symbolism.” Slotkin was talking about the American frontier as a symbolic reference point for justifying expansionist violence throughout history. Today, we can see the mytho-political uses of symbolic violence in mainstream media portrayals of the “hood.”

Any Alabamians in house? - Department of Justice - The beat goes on even when we are not apprised of all the wheels that are turning daily.

Alabama Real Estate Investor Admits to Bid Rigging and Mail Fraud Conspiracies Involving Foreclosed Homes

A southern Alabama business man has pleaded guilty for his role in conspiracies to rig bids and commit mail fraud at public real estate foreclosure auctions in southern Alabama.

Michael P. Barbour admitted to conspiring to fraudulently acquire title to foreclosed properties at artificially low prices by agreeing with others not to bid against each other at public foreclosure auctions in southern Alabama.
    …………. snip ………………………..
he investigation into fraud and bid rigging in the Alabama real estate foreclosure industry is being conducted by the Washington Criminal II Section of the Antitrust Division and the FBI’s Mobile Field Office, with the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Alabama. Anyone with information concerning bid rigging or fraud related to public real estate foreclosure auctions should contact the Washington Criminal II Section of the Antitrust Division at 202-598-4000, call the Antitrust Division’s Citizen Complaint Center at 1-888-647-3258 or visit http://www.justice.gov/atr/contact/newcase.htm.

The charges were brought in connection with the President’s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force. The task force was established to wage an aggressive, coordinated and proactive effort to investigate and prosecute financial crimes. With more than 20 federal agencies, 94 U.S. attorneys’ offices, and state and local partners, it’s the broadest coalition of law enforcement, investigatory and regulatory agencies ever assembled to combat fraud. Since its formation, the task force has made great strides in facilitating increased investigation and prosecution of financial crimes; enhancing coordination and cooperation among federal, state and local authorities; addressing discrimination in the lending and financial markets; and conducting outreach to the public, victims, financial institutions and other organizations. Since fiscal year 2009, the Justice Department has filed over 18,000 financial fraud cases against more than 25,000 defendants. Schroder & Co. Bank AG Reaches Resolution under Justice Department’s Swiss Bank Program and Agrees to Pay $10.3 Million Penalty

The Department of Justice announced today that Schroder & Co. Bank AG has reached a resolution under the department’s Swiss Bank Program.

“As today’s agreement reflects, Swiss banks continue to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding bank accounts opened and maintained for U.S. individuals in the names of sham structures such as trusts, foundations and foreign corporations,” said Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Larry J. Wszalek of the Department of Justice’s Tax Division. “The department’s prosecutors and the IRS are actively following these leads to criminally investigate and prosecute those individuals who willfully evaded or assisted in the evasion of U.S. income tax obligations.”

The Swiss Bank Program, which was announced on Aug. 29, 2013, provides a path for Swiss banks to resolve potential criminal liabilities in the United States. Swiss banks eligible to enter the program were required to advise the department by Dec. 31, 2013, that they had reason to believe that they had committed tax-related criminal offenses in connection with undeclared U.S.-related accounts. Banks already under criminal investigation related to their Swiss-banking activities and all individuals were expressly excluded from the program.

Under the program, banks are required to:
