People who want to identify with the GOP brand look for reasons not to be horrified, and then they vote GOP - again. I think it was Karl Frisch who is a Democratic strategist who went crazy in 2014 trying to talk sense to his New Orleans family. He had them convinced - GOP candidates were dangerous loons and they should vote for the Dem. And oh my God, it was Mary Landrieu - she might as well be GOP anyway. But the GOP candidate said one sane thing, and Karl’s family said, “I just don’t feel right, voting against the GOP and this guy won’t be so bad anyway. See?”
This is my fear, and Trump gets it. GOP is a brand, the “team” that people support and they look for ways to feel good about supporting the “team”. It’s shit like Trump’s statements on taxes and health care that give those people a reason to vote for someone so obviously disastrously unfit to be POTUS.
