MEMO TO: Kim Davis, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, et al

Many words in the English language have different meanings. Like “rose”, which is a type of flower, a girl’s name, a color, and the past tense of ‘rise.’

“Marriage” has more than one meaning. The Sacrament of Marriage ≠ Marriage:The Legal Contract. They have nothing to do with each other legally. You can have both or none or one or the other.

You don’t need a church/religion to get Married:The Legal Contract in the USA. If you receive The Sacrament of Marriage in a church, (which churches have complete control over who they allow to have this sacrament - they can say no to anyone they like) you’re not legally married in the eyes of the law, unless you file the Marriage:The Legal Contract license, with the state capital before the expiration date (they’re usually good for 90 days.).

If you fail to file the Marriage:The Legal Contract license, you’re not legally married, no matter what you did in a church.

Kim Davis doesn’t work for a church, and her job has nothing whatsoever to do with The Sacrament of Marriage (which you do not need a license for.) Her job as County Clerk, is to validate ID’s and make sure the people applying for whatever county license/record they’re applying for (birth, death, marriage, hunting, fishing, and voting registration among other duties - see this: http://rowancountyclerk.com), are who they say they are.

Validating IDs for a legal contract that has nothing to do with any religion or church, shouldn’t have any religious connotations unduly placed upon it whatsoever.

Kim Davis not only broke the law, she did it completely outside of the context of her religion. Shame her pastor/preacher and SuperGrifter™ Attorney failed to explain that to her, and has allowed Mike Huckabee, and other money-grabbers to encourage her down this path of stupidity, mockery, and public humiliation.

They’re all fighting for something that doesn’t exist: A Sacrament of Marriage that’s LEGALLY recognized by the state as a contract. It doesn’t exist because of Separation of Church and State, and I can guarantee you that there is no “Church” in the US that wants to get into the business of processing legal documents (ok, maybe Scientology - but… well….yeah ), which is why the Churches are more than happy with The Sacrament and the Legal Contract being totally separate things.

It is not a County Clerk’s job to decide who should marry whom, nor ask any personal questions of the couple beyond verifying their IDs, or make any judgement on them in any way, shape, or form. It’s not her call on their past (divorce), present (desire to be married), or future (how they live their lives including what TV Shows, Book Clubs, or sex games they enjoy.) Her job is to verify they’re who they say they are, because her office offers a civil Public Service in issuing licenses/certificates, and no one gets to choose which members of the Public to serve. You swore an oath (likely on a Bible) to serve ALL the Public.

A marriage license is usually valid for 90 days. Issuing a marriage license doesn’t guarantee that a marriage/wedding will actually take place. (I know. I let a marriage license expire, and never sent it in, and thus I was never LEGALLY married to the person I shared a wedding with (thankfully), and very convenient for not having to divorce them a few years later. Just simply take our toys and go our separate ways.)

A County Clerk issuing Marriage:The Legal Contract licenses, has zero to do with The Sacrament of Marriage that a church performs, unless they have a second job as a pastor with that particular church, in which case, the jobs are still completely separate, and one has no authority over the other.

Government ≠ Church.

Where are all the pastors, priests, and attorneys, who can explain this to her, and why haven’t they?

You can get married in this country and do it completely RELIGION-FREE. You can even do it “Wedding - The Event™” free. All you need is someone who is licensed to marry people in your state, to sign your license, along

with you and your spouse’s signature, and the rest of the document filled out, and file it with your state capital before the expiration and VOILÁ! You now are contracted legally to your spouse, with all the legal perks that gives you, (filing joint taxes, Spousal Social Security benefits, being able to be in the hospital as Next-of-Kin, actually getting a divorce - oh, you only had The Sacrament of Marriage and not Marriage: The Legal Contract? Oh sorry…. you’re not legally married, so no legal divorce for you, so good luck splitting up your stuff. etc.) which the Sacrament does not.

So why would she care? Why is it any of her business what anyone who applies for a marriage license does after they leave her office? Why is she assuming everyone is having a church wedding complete with the Sacrament? And why does it matter when she has nothing whatsoever to do with that?

If I fill up my car on the way to a gay wedding, is the gas station owner now involved in somehow condoning Marriage Equality?

It’s each individual Church’s call on whether or not they are willing to perform gay or straight marriages, not Kim Davis’s.

Can I just say that the Conservatives’ choice to make Kim Davis the Rock they’re going to die on, is awesome entertainment and scary at the same time.

The level of audacity and cherry picking on the part of her fans is mind blowing, but the sheer level of absolute stupidity is terrifying (kind of like everything they’re associated with.)

Here again we see just how much the New “Christian” Ego™ has turned into a rabid Control Monster, whereby they are bound and determined to, in their own words, “shove [their religion] down everyone’s throats” like they’ve accused everyone else nonstop of shoving [Marriage Equality, Health Care, Cause du Jour] down their throats.

If Kim Davis’s “faith” was at the heart of this and really mattered to her personally more than anything else, she would have had no problems resigning, and moving on.

That didn’t happen.

Instead, it’s become clear that she not only cares more about controlling others, even her own deputies, and keeping her $80k insanely high for KY, taxpayer-funded annual salary, than her “faith”, but she cares about being a media whore too - otherwise she would have left humbly and quietly, like loving and pious people do, because, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12: 30-31.

P.S. - “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” Matthew 6:5-6

Oh, and don’t be a dick.

    Bringing this over..

It would be hilarious if his bs didn’t actually affect anyone…. In fairness to Bobby,,,MANY REPUBLICANS have done similar stunts with state budgets..it’s not just Jindal…

Jindal put the state in such a deep hole that this past spring he had to resort to Orwellian doublespeak by forcing lawmakers to pass the so-called SAVE Act, which purportedly let him claim that he balanced the budget without a tax increase. Only in Jindal’s mind and La-La Land is that the case. In truth, Jindal and lawmakers raised taxes and fees by $767 million. Louisiana voters aren’t fooled — nor are those in Iowa and New Hampshire, where Jindal’s delusional presidential campaign remains stuck below 2 percent. Meanwhile, we recently learned that $767 million in tax and fee hikes still won’t get Louisiana through the first half of the current fiscal year. Already the Jindal administration has had to recommend $4.6 million in mid-year budget cuts, most of which fell on public higher education. More mid-year cuts are likely as the price of oil hovers near $40 a barrel. The Jindal budget pegged oil at $62 a barrel. It gets worse. Louisiana’s popular TOPS college scholarship program is $19 million short, and the state’s Medicaid program has a whopping $335 million budget gap — because Jindal’s budget didn’t account for increased spending across various programs. Team Jindal’s official response to all this bad news is to hope that state revenue forecasts improve. They won’t. In fact, in future years Louisiana’s structural deficit will grow exponentially. It is forecast to exceed $700 million in Fiscal Year 2017 (which begins July 1, 2025), and by FY2019 it’s expected to reach $1.9 billion.

I’m not at all happy with this change, of course. :D Okay, off to check my email.

WC morning, Gx2! My new neighbourhood mailbox will not be on my street - somewhere around the corner, I think. I don’t pay too much attention when they send me notifications; no one really writes me personal letters and the billing mail and flyers do not interest me in the least. ;) ;) Yes they apparently come with a lock and key - I got an envelope from them yesterday (in my outside-the-front-door mailbox which is where I believe mail should be put) which I think contains *my* key but I haven’t opened it yet. Being me, I will eventually get around to it when the mood strikes me. :D

          September 12, 2025 at 1:23 pm

There are a number of communities here in the US that have USPS mailbox banks in their neighborhoods. Yes, they are locked and very secure, but it is different from house to house delivery, for sure. What is kind of astonishing to me, even here in Seattle, a fairly large city, I see the old fashioned mailboxes, out on the edge of the curb, no locks, nothing at all to prevent any passerby from opening the door and having a look-see. Or maybe helping themselves, if they are that way inclined. It’s kind of touching in the trust level, but with identity theft being the number 1 worldwide biggest crime, it makes no sense anymore.

Don’t, please Pamela. You *know* how I am about opening stuff - it’s likely I won’t get to that new mailbox until Christmas! I already have two pieces of unopened mail - not bills - that were delivered to the house and they have been sitting here quite comfortably, one for months and months now. I know they relate to my previous young guest but haven’t felt like checking the details. :D :D

              September 12, 2025 at 2:26 pm

You wouldn’t believe what people throw away is true. In my neighbourhood it’s not thought of as garbage theft - more like recycling. We are encouraged to put ‘big’ stuff we no longer need or use outside at certain times of the month and anyone interested can help him/herself. If it’s still there at the end of the day we have to remove it ourselves and pay the town to remove it on garbage pickup day.

Tally, that was extremely well said. There are some (Rand for example) who think the state should get out of the marriage business. He talks about marriage just being a contract and most don’t need state approval. Of course he is wrong. The state determines the language that must be in a contract that makes it legal. The state adjudicates any claims arising out of the contract, etc.
Any religious based marriage has standing only in so far as it is considered valid by the state.
And your last quote says it all.

It reminds me of the statement by St. Francis which has never been verified. In effect it says, “I always try to spread the Gospel, and occasionally I use words.” Many variants out there but the gist is simply, actions speak the loudest and the actions of Davis, Huckabee, etc. speak vewry loudly, and they are speaking Christian.

All you need is someone who is licensed to marry people in your state, to sign your license, along with you and your spouse’s signature, and the rest of the document filled out, and file it with your state capital before the expiration and VOILÁ!

Question - Then why are the couples straight or gay even going to this vile, ignoramus of a woman for the license? Can’t they go to someone who is licensed to marry people in their county? Or is she the only one that has the license in their county?

    • 87 Tally
      September 12, 2025 at 2:18 pm

Each county has a County Clerk, who is responsible for issuing the licenses. So you have to go to the Clerk’s office for the county you live in.

You get the license, then go find your PEEP who is licensed (because it’s a professional business service), to marry people, they sign the license that was issued to you by the County Clerk. You and your spouse sign it, along with your witnesses. Then you send it to the state cap for filing. They’ll send you back an actual Certificate of Marriage once that all happens.

Yes. Her name is on it, because she’s paid $80k for it to be on the licenses. She doesn’t want her name on it, she needs to resign.

Usually, the software they use to print out the license, auto-fills in the blanks for you, so the people at the state capital won’t have to decipher someone’s aweful handwriting…. but yes.

Russian astronaut Gennady Padalka has returned to Earth with the record for having spent the most time in space.

The 57-year-old’s latest mission lasted 168 days, bringing his total to 879 days in space over five trips.

This is two months longer than the previous record set in 2005 by Russian Sergei Krikalev over six missions.

Mr Padalka and two other members from the International Space Station (ISS) landed safely in Kazakhstan on their Soyuz spacecraft just before sunrise.

The capsule descended after re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere under a parachute.

The media is being very understanding, nice and complementary to VP Joe because he hasn’t made a decision (and it shows in these polls) but should he decide to run they will start to tear him down as well. It’s their MO. Every negative thing they can drum up will be on full display day and night to the public. They will try and pit him against PBO and will parse every single word he says and will write stories stating how “they” perceive his words. They don’t want anyone to runaway with this race. They want the horse race and so far their strategy is working.

I agree. Biden seems to be getting an “Obama bounce” from his bosses winning streak (this sentiment can also be seen in folks pining PBO to have a third term). It is also a reflection of lack of enthusiasm for HRC (just as Trump is a reflection of lack of enthusiasm for Jeb).

Jeremy Corbyn has promised to lead a Labour “fightback” after being elected the party’s new leader by a landslide.

The veteran left-winger got almost 60% of more than 400,000 votes cast, trouncing his rivals Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall.

He immediately faced an exodus of shadow cabinet members - but senior figures including Ed Miliband urged the party’s MPs to get behind him.

Mr Corbyn was a 200-1 outsider when the three-month contest began.

But he was swept to victory on a wave of enthusiasm for his anti-austerity message and promise to scrap Britain’s nuclear weapons and renationalise the railways and major utilities.

He told BBC News he had been a “bit surprised” by the scale of his victory but his campaign had showed “politics can change and we have changed it”.

Her polls aren’t quite low enough yet so the answer is no. The media has a little bit more to go yet. For 6 straight weeks it was non-stop email scandal that led every cable and network news daily. If they were talking about her it was about this scandal. She laughed it off earlier this summer and they made her pay. The Clinton’s were believing their own press and bought into the idea that she had this election all wrapped up into a neat and pretty bow. They insulated her and kept her from the press and the media is paying her back in spades. She has the absolute worse political campaign advisers ever!!! I hate to sound this alarm but If VP Joe doesn’t run and she doesn’t turn this campaign around Dems are in deep do-do.

the second she said she was running, we’ve been in it deep. she’s always been a horrible campaigner, and has been terrible on many issues over the years, along with her husband (especially economic issues). they’ve been extremely divisive within the democratic party since he first ran and they developed the d.l.c. together. in fact, it almost seems as if dividing liberals has been their main purpose from the beginning, and look what’s happening now…all these years later.

i really thought president obama ended their game when he beat her and that they’d just go off and do humanitarian work and make millions and have a nice life. when it was becoming clear she was going to run again, i couldn’t believe it, since it was going to keep any of the potential good candidates out of the race, and here we are…yet again…completely predictable.

beginning to also think biden might be the only one to stop her, although been a little surprised at how far bernie has risen up the ranks, so if joe doesn’t run, who knows…that’s how bad of a candidate she is…bernie could possibly beat her. gag!

The media has always hated the Clintons (when in office or running for office) so I don’t think they were surprised by the negative propaganda (especially by the NYT). I think it is way too soon to panic, this email fake scandal is weak sauce, but I don’t think it is “payback” for how she is running her campaign. They will come after HRC or any Dem they view as a threat to the GOP winning the presidency. I think that Trump-mania forced the media to move up its attacks on Clinton. The media always attacks the Dems when the GOP is self-immolating.

DD, HRC may indeed have ‘the absolute worse political campaign advisers ever’ and that’s not alright, BUT IMO by relying on their advice so completely she also shows that she lacks the ability to make wise decisions on her own. To me she always seems to lack the leadership instinct, or the moral core, or the values, or the experience to be able to sense what is ‘right’ from time to time. She makes too many thoughtless decisions then compound them by thoughtless blusterings, before eventually caving. That hardly builds confidence.
