I really feel sad for Dr. Ben Carson; the guy obviously has a first rate mind because you don’t get to call shots at John Hopkins hospital without having a first rate mind. But last night he exposed himself as a fool, because how else to explain letting Donald Trump talk him off of position on vaccines. This guy let Donald Trump piss all over his knowledge of medicine.

Re Dr. Ben Carson >> the guy obviously HAD a first rate mind

Why aren’t we considering the fact that Carson’s mind is going? He wouldn’t be the first person to (gradually) lose his mind as he aged. The fact that he has retired from his profession, AND is frequently talking garbage is a clear indication to *me* that he’s passé (or passing) when it comes to seeking a leadership role. IMO when people like Carson, McCain et al, pass their prime it’s sad that their relatives or good friends don’t (love them enough to) hint them away from the limelight so that they don’t embarrass themselves by falling apart in public.

I talked with my goddaughter, the surgeon, about him last week. She made the point that, of all medical disciplines, surgery is strictly mechanical. You can be successful without ever engaging the “art” of medicine. Okay, she said any idiot who only concentrates on the mechanics can be a surgeon, but I disputed that. She said you can be an excellent surgeon without any feeling for humanity or the complexity of health, beyond its collection of component parts. She said there are many medical programs that emphasize that approach. She, of course, wanted to be, well, a real doctor although she dearly loves to have her hands in people’s guts. She was not that surprised that a surgeon could separate his expertise from the reality of the real world.

57, my own experience with the orthopedic surgeon when I fractured my knee holds with your god daughters’ view. His inability to hear me, or to assess the longterm impact has left me with a disability that has changed my life. Not in a good way. It is very sad, actually.

Sadly I think this applies to most doctors. One wrote me a prescription for generic medication when I tod her I almost died from taking it. They don’t listen. Empathy and sympathy they don’t seem to have anymore.

your gd is correct. my du also tells me surgeons suck at diagnosis and do operations by rote. without physicians telling them what to do, they would be utter failures. a steady hand and steely nerves are needed to be a surgeon, not intelligence.

Morning all. Chips, thanks for the sane, caring images of our President and FLOTUS after all the hate and stupidity of last night’s Republican ugliness. I wonder how successful Republican business people can look at this array of bozos and feel comfortable trusting them with the economy and the military. On the basis of pure business common sense, you would not hire any of them to run even a remote subsidiary. As for the rest of us, the thought of any one of these heartless poseurs getting anywhere near the White House is as frightening as any horror story.

It is September 17, 2025 and the Iran Nuclear deal will be fully implemented as the GOP effort to stop it has run out of time.
Any bellyaching and whining you hear henceforth will be familiar to Americans.

The GOP will threaten (impotently) to tear up The Deal.
The GOP will seek to extend USA sanctions—which they may succeed in doing—-but since the rest of the World will have removed all their sanctions, whatever the fools in Congress do will not be a significant blow to Iran.
Perhaps we will hear how our “lawless” POTUS has done this or that, you know, total bs.

In any case, The Iran deal Stands and PBO has done it!!!!!!! A Win for peace and Diplomacy. Thank you, President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry.

Vicki, this is great news and a day to celebrate. After all the hard work on the part of PBO, SOS Kerry, Sect. Muniz and legions of advisers, we have made a huge step forward toward peace. No other president could have achieved this huge milestone in effective diplomacy. The irony of the Republican intransigence on sanctions is that it will hurt US businesses and help other, smarter countries who will take advantage of the business opportunities in Iran. Amazing how stupid the so-called party of business is.

One thing VP Biden is doing that I really don’t understand is he refuses to take credit for all the work he’s done. I know he’s often self-deprecating but he goes out of his way to say that all this progress that he had oversight for has nothing to do with him or PBO. I disagree and wish he would at least leave it at that! I know VP Joe is a humble man. That’s part of what we love about him. But he needs to stand tall and take some bows!

He also seems to be getting a bit flummoxed with the 2016 speculation because he said yesterday that he can’t mention “Iowa” because the press will misconstrue what he’s trying to say.

Can Congress behave itself when the pope visits?

So last week, four House members — Democrats Dan Lipinski (Ill.), Juan Vargas (Calif.), and Republicans Jeff Fortenberry (Neb.) and Tim Murphy (Pa.) sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, asking them to put out some sort of guidance “to the House and Senate on the appropriate decorum, protocol and behavior. . . .”

Members could use info on “how to greet the Pope, proper attire [no jeans?] . . . among other matters of etiquette,” the letter said.

Tool to check and see how much of your retirement invested money is going toward fossil fuels….

    http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2015/09/17/3702007/fossil-free-funds-tool/

Hidden inside almost every American’s retirement plan are fossil fuel companies that emit huge amounts of carbon. Now, for the first time, individuals and employers have an easy way to find out exactly where their money is going and how many of their funds have holdings in fossil fuels.
A new investment web tool called Fossil Free Funds, launched Tuesday, is giving people accessibility and power over their mutual funds and retirement plans. It is a project through As You Sow, a shareholder advocacy non-profit group founded by Andrew Behar.
“Ninety-one million Americans have a mutual fund account in some way, and nobody actually knows what they own. We didn’t know what we owned either,” Behar told ThinkProgress. After a lot of time spent digging through databases, Behar said he and his team found that a lot of As You Sow’s shares had holdings in Exxon, Chevron, other fossil fuel based companies.

Jeb is not polling very well at all, so voters don’t seem to have forgotten about GWB. It has been ordained by those who run/own the GOP that it is Jeb’s turn (just as it was preordained that it was Mitt’s turn in 2012). The GOP “base” is revolting just as it did in 2012. It will be “anybody but Bush” until the party fat cats win the war of attrition and Jeb is the nominee.

    Mr. Pierce

    http://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/news/a38005/gop-debate-either-dumb-or-delusional/

“There’s one thing I’ll tell you about my brother,” said Jeb (!) Bush. “He kept us safe.”

    And everybody cheered.

I ran out of patience long ago with The Great Mulligan. C-Plus Augustus ignored the terrorist threat for nine months. He told his Attorney General to shift focus from counterterrorism to weed and porn. He told his National Security Advisor to worry about the Russians. He blew off a Presidential Daily Briefing and a CIA briefer. Then, on September 11, 2001, there were 3000 Americans who were not kept safe on his watch. He then stonewalled any real investigation of his negligence. He then launched a war of choice after allowing the architect of the attacks to go free. There were more than 4000 American soldiers who were not kept safe. And now his blithering brother suggests that time began on September 12, 2001. Scott Walker then chimed in about how it was all Barack Obama’s fault. Then there was Mike Huckabee, stressing the importance of “good intelligence” on formulating foreign policy. This would have been a good idea in, say, 2003, when Jeb(!)’s brother was cooking the books to start his pet war. But everybody cheered. Nobody called them on this. Nobody, except Rand Paul, had second thoughts on sending more American troops back into Iraq. But Donald Trump, whose combat experience is limited to punching out a music teacher in prep school, said that he thought the president lacked courage. I wouldn’t hire any of these guys as a crossing guard.

This is just the another example of standard GOP operating procedure, say a lie confidently and a lot of Republicans will believe it as true. Black on black crime is actually not related at all to cops killing unarmed black men because if a black person commits a crime against another black person than they go to jail. If a cop shoots a black man nothing happens.

    • 121 DerBingle (@DerBingle2)

Yeah he got himself turned around on that one.

“Wasn’t no police officer involved,” Sherman said, “wasn’t anybody else involved — and I didn’t hear anybody shouting ‘black lives matter’ then.”

Actually we did. I can point him to a boatload of protests starting in the early 90’s where Black people were out in force saying stop the violence. They may not have used the exact phrase black lives matter but we all got the gist of it.

I understand what he’s saying but trying to link the two was not a good move.
