Been so busy, so just getting to all of this. Thank you to all of you for your wonderful coverage of the Pope’s visit.
I also noticed in the clip above that Boehner never spoke with the Pope, but only to the other cardinals that were present, unlike PBO who chatted and joked with him. Tells you a lot about someone and their level of self confidence when they can’t look you in the eye or talk with you. I’m just sayin’
That cartoon fits those haters perfectly. I have long said that if Jesus Christ himself said that President Obama was a Christian those people wouldn’t believe him.
Never too late sherijr, good morning to ya!! Who’d have thought a couple of years ago, we’d all be sitting around here watching live coverage of the Pope?!
He is hitting so many marks, wish I had the skills of NW, but since I do not, I’ll just sit here and listen and comment later. I am falling in love with this pope.
Of the four figures the Pope put in his pantheon — Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton — the most interesting for understanding Francis’s message is surely Day, who was at the forefront of the Catholic Worker’s Movement and radically antiwar.
Good morning TOD.
I am checking back in after my Yom Kippur break.
VP Biden got loud applause when he entered the chamber and as far as I could tell, he was the only one to get that .
John Kerry, front and center, got a handshake from The Pope.
Too many crocodile tears from the GOPers for me - I’ll listen without watching. They STOP the President from implementing immigration reform & then cry for the “sons of immigrants” - pffft
Pope Francis is going all in. The one thing that the right likes is what he said about abortion, but on the other hand there was less applause on what he said about the death penalty. As usual, they only care about the life before it gets here.
To the Republicans, once the child is born they don’t give a dam about it, it can die of starvation, or not having healthcare, or no home, gun violence, they don’t care.
Talking about the creation of jobs for the common good and on to climate change, everything that congress has not done and actively stood in the way of PBO doing anything. It is interesting how he often mentions courage.
“I am convinced that we can make a difference, I’m sure (regarding climate change) this congress has an important role to play.”
will he have changed any republican lawmaker hearts? I expect they will instead double down on their rhetoric and hate… and no doubt attack him even further. Maybe folks listening at home will get his messages of love and inclusiveness. #Hopeful
So, Chipsticks, does my check in qualify me to be morally first, as I truly was filling in all the fields (which for some reason will not stay completed), just as you posted the link to the new thread. ? I recognize and accept that is an unacceptably long question! <3:bear:<3
NPR lady said “this has been a dream come true” for Bonehead. He had advocated for Congress to invite a Pope to speak for years. Probably not this Pope but it was good timing that we have first AA President and first Latino Pope.
I haven’t read this article, fully, yet — too busy laughing that finally when Catholic Republicans who are running for President are asked, “Which American woman should be on the $10 bill?” they can say “Dorothy Day.” Instead of Thatcher or their wives or the lady next door.
About Day (something for everybody, I’d joke, and What’s Not to Love?):
“Though she was raised Episcopalian and became an agnostic in her youth, as she ‘took a Marxist lover, joined the young labor movement and wrote for far-left newspapers like the Masses,’ a relationship and the birth of her daughter led to the church. In the 1930s, in the depths of the Depression, she launched the periodical The Catholic Worker and a philosophy to go along with it: pro-union, anti-poverty, pacifist, anti-government. She even went so far as to refer to it as anarchism, believing that individuals could be empowered to do good on their own.”
Pope Francis just cited Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. Here's who they were. http://t.co/86Wwd6DM3O via @TIMEHistory
Dear Heavens - Boehner looks constipated
yer in my spot.
Always the gracious loser :)
jus’ sayin’
:-) Gooooooood evening Ms Australia!!!
8 minutes to the bewitching hour - so glad Boehner belongs to the US and not us - couldn’t cope with that misery - wonder if he cried for Abbott.
Congrats 99ts and Good Morning to you, Ms. Chips and all TODers!
Thank you sabreen60 - a good day to be at TOD.
Also too - FIRST!
Colbert belongs in the Smithsonian, he is a national treasure.
Helmet head Calista is next to Newt! Yikes!
Who still invites these people - or do previous members always get invited?
INDEED. Thanks Chips! :)
Moooooooooorning Hopefruit!
That was the FIRST thing I thought of … no class, no manners, nothing.
He’s something else Jacqueline, incredible ignorance. Good morning to ya!!
Good morning!

Yep. And I’m just agreein’ !!!!
GM TODville.
This joint meeting does feel like a SOTU, but 12 hours earlier than usual, LOL.
Surprised that no one suggested general rules of etiquette (allow guest to sit first) to @SpeakerBoehner:
Ignore the GIF, but the words ring true (our legislative body apparently has less self-control than pre-schoolers):
Lovely to see people coming to thank John Kerry
Good to see justices Ruth & Sonja, SoS John, & VP Joe.
YES - He shook hands with John Kerry - man of peace
wow..Pope Francis shook John Kerry’s hands…Impressive…smilin
Oooh, Pope only shook John Kerry’s hand when going down the aisle.
Here! <3
Boehner already crying, of course
Going there already to remind them of what their purpose is. These fools really need this homily.
Does anyone have an early copy of the address?
Good grief! Mr. Speaker looks like he’s been crying already.
Good Papal Morning TODVille!
That cartoon fits those haters perfectly. I have long said that if Jesus Christ himself said that President Obama was a Christian those people wouldn’t believe him.
dang, late to the party… nearly forgot, so thank you for reminding me :)
Never too late sherijr, good morning to ya!! Who’d have thought a couple of years ago, we’d all be sitting around here watching live coverage of the Pope?!
you are so right, Chips- I have no religion at all… thus tis a miracle I’m here ;) Love this man in his goodness.
“….the dignity of the human being… to protect by means of the law…every human life.”
let’s all wave to donna.
Speaks of everyday working people and their contributions that sustain the nation.
From this point on, I will try NOT to watch Boehner. But he has the emotional well being of a gnat.
Watching the Pope and Joe only in 3…2…1 …
Not entirely sure emotion is his problem.
Says he will also dialogue re: the elderly.
and the youth. Will do so through the historical stories of our nation. He is a storyteller like PBO.
I think he meant SOTU behavior not SCOTUS., no ?
lincoln, mlk - hey, rethugs, remember them?

Thanks forus!
He is hitting so many marks, wish I had the skills of NW, but since I do not, I’ll just sit here and listen and comment later. I am falling in love with this pope.
yep he’s pretty wonderful in his realness and humanity.
Of the four figures the Pope put in his pantheon — Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton — the most interesting for understanding Francis’s message is surely Day, who was at the forefront of the Catholic Worker’s Movement and radically antiwar.

I see more and more why he and PBO are simpatico; so many of his words and ideas echo our dear president.
Good morning TOD.
I am checking back in after my Yom Kippur break.
VP Biden got loud applause when he entered the chamber and as far as I could tell, he was the only one to get that .
John Kerry, front and center, got a handshake from The Pope.
I think I’m seeing the future.
oh the backrubs for John Lewis, tear inducing, with the Pope talking of the march w/ MLK.
Thisssss!
go ahead Pope and say #BlackLivesMatter
Is Rubio pretending crying???
Yes
“Most of us were once foreigners.” Mentions that the rights of those who were there before us were not respected.”
shout out to Native Americans.
Excellent.
Too many crocodile tears from the GOPers for me - I’ll listen without watching. They STOP the President from implementing immigration reform & then cry for the “sons of immigrants” - pffft
He is going all in on how to treat immigrants.
LOL. He is clearly trolling the thugs. Hope their voters hear him and finally realize what a load of divisive hatred their pols are spewing.
Maybe the Pope privately encouraged Boehner to allow the immigration reform vote. One can dream.
Golden rule: simple compassion!
the Golden Rule, oh baby, he’s singing my song ;) he and POTUS, my dream leaders.
The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick uses for us.
Global abolition of death penalty
YAY to that!
omg he went there, love this… so you anti-abortionists—-> life matters outside the womb.
by the time he gets to climate change, we gonna need a clean-up crew.
Pope Francis is going all in. The one thing that the right likes is what he said about abortion, but on the other hand there was less applause on what he said about the death penalty. As usual, they only care about the life before it gets here.
So the GOP thought he was going to speak on abortion - and then we get to the death penalty. Not so noisy.
To the Republicans, once the child is born they don’t give a dam about it, it can die of starvation, or not having healthcare, or no home, gun violence, they don’t care.
Raise people out of extreme poverty.
I love seeing Joe’s nods throughout this speech… Run Joe Please!
I’ve been watching his face the whole time, sending him the same message: Run Joe Please!
This is not your usual Pope - he will be well remembered when the history is written - amazing what happens in the age of Obama.
So true!
Talking about the creation of jobs for the common good and on to climate change, everything that congress has not done and actively stood in the way of PBO doing anything. It is interesting how he often mentions courage.
“I am convinced that we can make a difference, I’m sure (regarding climate change) this congress has an important role to play.”
go back to your country, you furriner.
aaand my job is done.
Diplomacy!
shout out to POTUS, Iran, Cuba- I think
Yes, that’s what I heard, also.
Yep
I had to look up Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton; always good to learn something more about our history.
Gives the characteristics of a good political leaders, all of which PBO has and congress repubs do not. Feel the burn.
A good political leader always hopes to initiate processes rather than occupying spaces.
In other words ——————> President OBAMA
start process instead of occupation of spaces.
a kick in the collective gnads of neocons.
Boom!
All NPR got out of the Popes speech is that he’s still against abortion and gay marriage, changing to music.
msn headline: Pope calls for an end to the death penalty
not at all surprised….pity tho…but fortunately others have gotten more…
Great remarks, Pope Francis. Can’t wait to see the transcript, and read it straight through, again.
will he have changed any republican lawmaker hearts? I expect they will instead double down on their rhetoric and hate… and no doubt attack him even further. Maybe folks listening at home will get his messages of love and inclusiveness. #Hopeful
Chat away

Why is Boehner standing next to the Pope on the balcony?
By Zeus! And he is crying again.
NPR lady said “this has been a dream come true” for Bonehead. He had advocated for Congress to invite a Pope to speak for years. Probably not this Pope but it was good timing that we have first AA President and first Latino Pope.

Thank you, Pope Francis.
