I know this is a longshot, but Boner resigning could allow him to abandon Hastert rule for pending budget fight. Gov’t shutdown this close to Presidential election would be bad for GOP, maybe whoever owns/controls Boner is taking drastic measures to avoid shutdown. I think that’s a big probability, EricFive. If he is not trying to hold on to the speakership, maybe there’s less chance he’ll follow through on any deal he works out to avoid a government shutdown rather than cave to the wackos who don’t care about the country.

Thoughts on Boehner - He was going to lose leadership, he is ill, scandal - no-one seems to have a clue.
Probably all of the above (re: Boehner), but Pope Francis’ address may have touched a moral fiber in Boehner, who came to his senses and realized his fate as a failed leader of the shipwreck that calls itself the GOP.
The silver lining is that the USA is blessed with a leader who is head-and-shoulders above anyone else in moving the country forward despite the chaos that now prevails in US politics now.
Would be surprised if this change of personnel works to PBO’s disadvantage.
I do fear what the wingnuts will do now - although a shutdown impacts all in the US it also has major impact outside of the US. The world could be back in recession if the fools decide to use this to shut down government.

I would love to believe that Bohener’s resignation will in some way prevent a government shutdown but when you think about it rarely are there any consequences for the Republicans bad behavior.
