Thanks, AMK. That’s an amazing fact I never heard before. The arrogance of Republican candidates who presume to know more than the experts on science and the pope on religion is truly astonishing. They are incapable of self reflection.

Morning Chips. Our VP seems imbued with a special spirit lately. He’s really bringing it on in his speeches and presentations-as if truth were just shining in him. I hope he makes his decision soon. Everyday I stare at my Biden for President buttons, hoping they will be prophetic.

Good ‘afternoon’, Chips Chica; hope you had a good night’s rest! ;) ;)

Good Morning/Evening, TODobots! I suppose you are all on a high from the unrelenting ‘goodies’ dished out this week! Off the top of my head I cannot think of a week that has been more jam-packed with positives, day after day after day! :D **Life’s good.**

A special *THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH* to the TOD staff for making it so much easier to get a cohesive recap of what-all happened!

Thank *YOU* too to our research-photographer, JER, and to ALL TOD reporters and contributors!

You have all made our village into a terrific place to discover what’s going on on any given day, and (on behalf of all of us) we all thank you! Pat yourselves on the back, please. :)

    • 29 hopefruit2
      September 27, 2025 at 9:19 am

Has Snowden made us think about the problems that we as a country and as world citizens face? Like poverty, wealth inequality, finding effective cures for cancer, AIDS, diabetes or serious mental illness like schizophrenia, bipolar depression and PTSD? Or how to re-assimilate our veterans with jobs, healthcare and social support after they return from war? Or how to prepare our young girls and give them equal opportunity in education and all other facets of life? Or how to solve the problem of mass incarceration? Police brutality? Inner city crime, violence, and poverty? Rural poverty & hunger, lack of access to resources? Alcoholism epidemic among Native Americans?

      • 30 bella2758
        September 27, 2025 at 9:31 am

Did Snowden make us think about the racism that is alive and well in this country thanks to Republican politicians and parts of their racists supporters. When the Tea Party started their racists B.S., if the leaders of the Republican Party had stood up and spoke out against that kind of talk, they might not be dealing with the likes of Donald Trump now, or Boehner wouldn’t have been run out of town by 30 or 45 tea party racists. Instead all the leaders were concern about was winning. As Grandma used to say, when you jump in bed with a snake know that sooner or later you will be biten.

i think they do this so the “the news” can build up a “comeback story.” also let’s them make the guy from immense privilege and wealth seem like an underdog. people love underdog stories. doesn’t matter that any BUSH boy is the literal opposite of an underdog…the news will repeat it incessantly and the people will believe. i’m still convinced bush the 3rd will be the repub nominee. amazing rehab job by “the news” given how horribly bush the 2nd destroyed the family name just a few short years ago…

Yes, meta, and consuming becomes an addiction because people try desperately to overcome the loneliness with more things. “If I only had…., I’d feel better” They jokingly call it ‘retail therapy.’ But it never works and it’s never enough.

      September 27, 2025 at 9:37 am

Thanks a lot for reminding us of this link, Meta. I think the translator is doing a terrific job! He is so aligned with the Pope that the flow of his translation enhances the message as opposed to inhibiting its flow. He also gives me a chance to realize that (though I cannot speak it) my A-level Spanish wasn’t a total waste - I’m amazed that I still understand enough to be a 1/4 step before the translator (at least in my mind). :D

I read it well enough, Meta, but cannot speak it.

Yes, the translator is the best I’ve heard in a long time (in any language). IMO he did a great job because the Pope did not have to make awkward pauses for him to translate. Yes his inflections were ‘natural’ - like he himself was preaching, like he was involved …. as opposed to just parroting - a great job!

    DOJ and HUD Target Redlining

Regular readers know that one of the untold success stories of the Obama administration that I tend to focus on is the way the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice has been reformed after it was decimated during the Bush/Cheney years. Under the initial leadership of Thomas Perez (who is now the Secretary of Labor) and now Vanita Gupta, the division has been aggressively investigating police brutality and defending voting rights. And so, of course, I noticed this story reported by Sarah Lynch:

Hudson City Bancorp will pay nearly $33 million to settle civil charges alleging the New Jersey-based bank wrongfully discriminated against prospective black and Hispanic home buyers, in a case that marks the largest ever redlining settlement in history, the U.S. government said on Thursday.

The joint action by the U.S. Justice Department and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said that Hudson City Savings Bank tried to avoid locating branches and marketing mortgages in neighborhoods with a majority of black and Hispanic residents…

“This case should send a message to lenders throughout the country that the Justice Department will not tolerate racial discrimination in the extension of credit,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a statement…

I’m still on Pope Watch. Ha. But I’ve recorded some of the morning proceedings, so I’m a bit late watching.

Thought it was interesting that the wooden chair the Pope is sitting on - to make remarks at the Philly prison he’s visiting today - was made by the inmates. What a welcoming touch! MSNBC says there will be about 100 inmates present, ages 18-21. (I believe family members, also.)

Please let his visit to the prison give pause to those in our society who think incarceration (also part of our systemic racism) is the only answer.

    Good morning, TODville!

The Philly Prisons Commissioner told the Pope that the chair the inmates built for him represents “the talent and beauty that lies within all of us.”

” … Prison industries work programs have grown from deep-seeded roots which have withstood the challenges of time. From the late 1700s, spanning the Civil War, Great Depression, World War II and other major conflicts, and despite periods of criticism from detractors, increasingly constrictive procurement laws, misinformation and stigma associated with the value of inmate-made goods, prison industry work programs have endured.”

    http://www.unicor.gov/FPIHistory.aspx

The Archbishop told the prisoners that the Pope is the successor of St. Peter, who also spent a little time in Rome prisons.

And, on a couple of side notes, the Federal Prisons Industries is a huge deal … sat on many a chair and at many a “Navy tanker” desk that were made by talented prisoners, when I was a federal employee … and I thought another nice touch was the white plastic lawn chair provided for the Pope’s interpreter. Ha.

        Hello TOD.
I’d like to respond to something Meta wrote yesterday about Bill Clinton sabotaging his wife.
I emphatically agree. I think what Bill’s behavior demonstrates is that if he has his way, in the Clinton Family there will be only ONE president.

In conversation over lunch 2 years ago with my politically connected and/or interested friends we pretty much all agreed that HRC would have a better chance if she divorced Bill well before a run.

Now, as this sad joyless campaign lurches on, I am flabbergasted that with the array of enemies both overt and subtle, that Hillary persists in running this race. Debbie Wasserman Schultz as your biggest ally bodes ill, doesn’t it?

        • 124 meta
          September 27, 2025 at 11:51 am

I think that comment was written by someone else.

I’m kind of two minds about it. On the one hand, I don’t think he wants to see his own presidency eclipsed (we see this in some of his silly criticisms of PBO). On the other hand, I think he sees it as a kind of do-over for himself and a consolation prize to his long-suffering wife, a kind of personal redemption payback for all the crap he’s pulled over the years. In any case, I’ve never appreciated his political instincts and I think we’re about to see a redux of his worst moments from the 2008 campaign.

Something else at play in my opinion. Bill Clinton absolutely LOVED being POTUS and has missed it since he left the Oval. He kinds of dream of a third term by proxy. I have no doubt he respects his wife a lot and feels guilty about how the crap he’s put her through. But he’s also in love with the idea of being “there” for every big decision.

And, frankly, this is one of my problems with Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. I think the democratic insiders would consider it a “co-presidency” . Hillary would have some difficulty to establish her authority on the government apparatus. People would constantly try to get to Hillary through Bill.

Another problem I have, and this is absolutely not fair to Hillary: I SERIOUSLY doubt that swing voters and independents will be enthusiastic to put back the Clintons in the White House, especially Bill. Unless the republicans nominate a lunatic like Trump or a third Bush, swing voters will be very very tempted to vote for a “new face” (John Kashich for example) instead of voting for the Clintons.

Seems to me many democrats, in the party establishment AND in the “base”, are living in a bubble. Just because Hillary Clinton and her husband are popular among democrats doesn’t mean they are a shoe in in the general. FAR FROM IT.

I really hate that their focus is now on how victimized she is by the MSM. PBO never stopped to whine like this. He just kept moving, inspiring us to walk the blocks, register people to vote, stay clearly on our message and keep going.

If she’s going to be the nominee, she’s going to have to get much, much better at this. And having Bill be her attack dog is not going to fly.
