Early Bird Rise and Shine

On This Day: President Barack Obama views the Hoover Dam during a stop at the 1,900-foot long structure which spans the Colorado River at the Arizona-Nevada border, Oct. 2, 2012 (Photo by Pete Souza)

Today

The President has no public events scheduled for today - there’s some speculation that he might hold a press conference, we’ll see.

****

Pete Souza: “Just a really sad day. The President reacts in exasperation while glancing at cable tv coverage of the mass shooting in Oregon today. Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco had just updated him on the situation.

AMK, last night you had a wonderful summary of what the crazy caucus has “accomplished” since Boehner was ousted. I was too tired to fully appreciate it then, but it was a winner and I hope you’ll repost it for today.

        Done.

now that the mouth breathing teabagging nuts have chased the car and chased boner out, let’s see what else they ‘accomplished’.

        PP stays funded.

        No govt shutdown.

gop in a total disarray fucking mess over senior positions like speaker, majority leader and whip.

and now comes their latest ‘hit’.

their much hated ex-im bank is baaaack. with a bipartisan support no less and a move initiated from a rethug no less.

If you can’t have a well-regulated militia (wtf were the founders thinking), how about well-regulated guns?

Tax the mofos, especially the bullets.

Mandatory insurance for each gun, not each gun owner.

Africa, it’s a sad tragedy of our time that the US has no functioning press at the national level. They have been bought out and told to deliver the corporate/GOP message 24/7. This is one very large contributing factor to the ignorance and narrow-minded prejudice we see in so much of our population. I’ve seen this decline and corruption occur in my lifetime. Slowly and deliberately, the national media has made truth its enemy.

      GM all.

Someone needs to tell Chuck Todd that by his statement he is saying only a Democratic majority will pass gun reform and so thanks for finally saying out loud what everyone knows. In trying to smear the President he has inadvertently spoken a truth.

PBO had an economy in turmoil and free fall to save, two wars and many other woes and this is the assessment of a facile mind.

With ridiculous journalists like him, he needs to be hounded by his own words since shame and being wrong over and over again have no effect.

I just got into it on facebook. Some lady was complaining about the president ‘politicizing this issue and I basically went off on her and went a little too far I guess in calling her a racist. She got furious and said I had no right to say any such thing and my friend tried to browbeat me and say he and her were just upset at the president for using this as an excuse to work on getting this legislation passed and it wasn’t time to politicize the issue and to let the families mourn. I told him this was the excuse of the damned and it’s gotten old. It went south from there as I also brought up that the same sentiments were echoed on Sandyhook and look at what happened. Everybody sat back down and moved on, nothing got done.

Anyways I am frustrated with people like that who claim one thing and then try to act like they are for something when in reality it’s just an excuse to sit on their ass.

These people need to be called on this. We sit down and shut up way too often. Tell them the GOP politicized Benghazi within minutes. This is a shameless excuse to not address our national epidemic of gun violence. And there’s something very twisted about people who go out there minutes after a gun tragedy to defend arsenals in the home and the rights of murderers.

Republicans move to revive government bank loathed by conservatives

The Export-Import Bank has become a flashpoint between GOP leadership and the activist right.

By Jake Sherman and Lauren French

    10/01/15 03:44 PM EDT

    Updated 10/01/15 04:18 PM EDT

Supporters of the Export-Import Bank have secured enough Republican support to bring an extension of the agency’s charter to the House floor later this month, according to sources involved in the whipping.

More than 30 Republicans have signed on to a discharge petition, which would force a vote on reauthorizing the government-backed credit agency. Republicans expect at least a dozen more supporters. The vast majority of Democrats are expected to sign the discharge petition, a rarely invoked procedural maneuver that sidesteps the committee process.

If the numbers hold, there is nothing the GOP leadership could do to stop a vote on an extension.

The Import-Export bank is used to facilitate the selling of American-made goods overseas. There was some conspiracy theory b.s. that circulated the Internet, and the tea baggers got their panties in a twist. Even the Chamber of Commerce and other business entities have been up in arms over this insanity.

I have a theory: recent soft jobs numbers. In some part the fault of the shelving of the Import-Export bank?

    GM TODville.

Learned about the senseless massacre in Oregon yesterday during WHPB when Chris Jansing asked Josh Earnest about whether PBO would act on gun regulation.

As we know, PBO is a brilliant political visionary AND tactician.

He challenged US media to actually do some reporting (as opposed to speculation/gossip/donor dollars hype) on US gun deaths.

Since the MSM is nothing if not self-absorbed this pressing issue may not die as with them as it has countless times before.

    For @prettyfoot58 and other Philadelphians:
Since 9/11 in Philadelphia alone, more people killed by guns than died during that attack on America:

CNN actually addressed PBO’s challenge, to compare US gun deaths in the past decade (not from some arbitrary starting and end dates as some others have done) to terrorist-related deaths.

Terrorist-related deaths on US soil is 36 in the past 10 years:

Some suggestions from a commenter here….

Another massacre. Venting on Facebook is fruitless. I’ve committed tonight to generating 1,000 actions from myself and friends that can be a bit more productive.

    1) WRITE your SENATOR and US REPRESENTATIVE about this issue. Don’t email, and don’t sign the ever-useless online petition. Craft a letter, print it and mail it. It’s the most effective tool.

    2) DON’T be a partisan hack. The recipient should know you feel strongly about better laws, but shouldn’t be able to guess your party ID. That makes a more persuasive letter than a rant. Write as a parent, a spouse, a concerned patriot, a business person. Don’t be a liberal hack, it will backfire.

    3) Be specific: ask for a return of the assault weapons ban, a ban on high powered ammunition clips, and background and mental illness checks. These won’t stop every massacre, but they’ll stop some of them.

    4) If you live in a liberal state with liberal Congress critters, send letters to the national GOP and your state GOP HQ, and send the letter to the campaign HQs of Presidential candidates.

    5) if you feel really strongly, ask, in your letter, for a staff person at the Congress critters office to contact you to arrange an in person visit.

    6) If your congress critter claims the mantle of family values or a deep Christian faith, point out the tension between their views on guns and their views on faith. Focus not on the Amendment, but on the Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Kill.

    6) Contact CNBC and ask them to include a gun control question at the upcoming GOP debate.

    7) If you need a sample letter, mine is here. My story is a bit more personal. If you want a letter that is more generic message me and I’ll craft one and post it.

    http://behranalytics.blogspot….

    8) Urge your friends to do something while it’s still on their radar screens. The NRA isn’t all powerful, we just have the attention span of squirrels and we lose our focus.

Heard brief interview with #UCC gunman’s father (who lives in Tarzana CA [San Fernando Valley section of LA], the gunman and mother resided in Torrance CA before moving to Oregon) and he has an Irish accent. @cbsradionews reports that gunman was born in UK (Ireland?), so that probably explains his IRA online postings.

He is! Heard him testify at the hearings in our Oregon state capitol last session on the universal background check law that was passed. He and a few other Sheriff Arpaio types vowed not to enforce Oregon’s law, much like Kim Davis refusing to do her government job issuing marriage licenses. I hope some enterprising journalist digs into where the shooter obtained his guns and if he broke the new law

President Barack Obama is tapping Education Department official John King Jr. as acting secretary through the end of his term. But Obama is not nominating King to be secretary.

King is currently serving as delegated deputy secretary. He oversees preschool through high school education and manages the department’s operations.

can’t say i’m sad about this. the overemphasis on charter schools at the expense of traditional public schools has been one area where i haven’t been overly thrilled about with the obama administration. i know they’ve done some things for public schools, which has been great, but the money and attention given to charter school initiatives would be better spent first on improving the existing public school systems, in my opinion. of all the great people that have been in the obama administration, i’ve been dismayed that duncan seems to be the one staying the longest. can’t win them all! ;)

Absolutely 100% agree with both of you.
Charter schools lie that they are public schools.
Then, they drain the money out of public schools and put it into the pockets of the Charter school private profiteers.

In NYC Blomberg and his puppet Eva Moskowitz lead the charter school fight.
THIS is what is behind Most of the Anti-Bill de Blasio noise in New York.
