The model minority is losing patience
Asian-Americans are the United States’ most successful minority, but they are complaining ever more vigorously about discrimination, especially in academia
Oct 3rd 2015
MICHAEL WANG, a young Californian, came second in his class of 1,002 students; his ACT score was 36, the maximum possible; he sang at Barack Obama’s inauguration; he got third place in a national piano contest; he was in the top 150 of a national maths competition; he was in several national debating-competition finals. But when it came to his university application he faced a serious disappointment for the first time in his glittering career. He was rejected by six of the seven Ivy League colleges to which he applied.
“I saw people less qualified than me get better offers,” says Mr Wang. “At first I was just angry. Then I decided to turn that anger to productive use.” He wrote to the universities concerned. “I asked: what more could I have done to get into your college? Was it based on race, or what was it based on?” He got vague responses—or none. So he complained to the Department of Education. Nothing came of it. “The department said they needed a smoking gun.
In May this year Mr Wang joined a group of 64 Asian-American organisations that made a joint complaint to the Department of Education against Harvard, alleging racial discrimination. That follows a lawsuit filed last year against Harvard and the University of North Carolina by a group of Asian-American students making similar charges. The department rejected the claim in July, but another two complaints have since been filed by Asian-Americans, one against Harvard and one against nine other universities.
Zimmer accuses Broad charter plan of strategy to ‘bring down’ LAUSD
Posted on September 22, 2025 9:27 am by Michael Janofsky
Steve Zimmer, president of the LA Unified school board, said today that plans by Eli Broad and other philanthropists to expand the number of charter schools in the district represents “a strategy to bring down LAUSD that leaves 250,000 kids vulnerable to damage.”
A draft report of the plan appears show how the organizations involved would be creating the equivalent of a parallel school district, one with a defined goal of serving half the number of students attending LA Unified schools within eight years.
The “Great Public Schools Now Initiative” says the expansion would cost nearly half a billion dollars by 2023, through 260 new charter schools to serve an additional 130,000 students “most in need — low-income students of color.” Currently, about 151,000 students now attend charters in LA Unified, which has more charter schools, 264, than any school district in the country.
The 54-page report, dated “June 2015,” omits the names of authors or sponsoring organizations. But Eli Broad’s name appears at the end of a cover letter accompanying the report that makes a case for charter schools as “the greatest hope for students in L.A.” And alluding to the number of students on waiting lists to get into existing charters, now about 42,000, the need for more charters, he says, is urgent.
Man weeps uncontrollably as wife surprises him with actual buns in the oven to reveal she is five months pregnant after trying for a baby unsuccessfully for 17 YEARS
Dana Griffin-Graves and her husband Arkell Graves, both 41, suffered through four miscarriages and a still birth before giving up on having kids
But when Dana started working out with friends and found that she wasn’t losing weight, she went to a doctor and discovered she was pregnant
She filmed Arkell’s reaction to learning the news at their home in Dinwiddie County, Virginia
I cried for them both.
How very sweet.
Gracious Lord, please make their journey a beautiful safe birth on Feb 16, 2016.
This is a joyous story.
Thank you, Rikyrah.
THE 10 BLACKEST MOMENTS OF 2015 (…SO FAR, AT LEAST)
Damon Young, 9/30/15
Two thoughts came to mind while watching Trevor Noah interview Kevin Hart during his Daily Show debut Monday night:
1. I feel somewhat unqualified to critique Noah’s performance. Mainly because I never was a huge fan of the Daily Show. I didn’t dislike it at all. It just was never must-see-TV for me. If it’s after 11 and I’m still watching TV, 9o% of the time it’s a basketball game. So it’s difficult for me to compare his performance to Jon Stewart’s — which is what every Noah critique boils down to — become I’m just not familiar enough with Stewart’s to make that assessment. (It’s also an inherently unfair critique, in no small part because it’s comparing a 2015 Stewart to Noah, not a 2000 Stewart.) That said, I thought he did a decent job. I believe he’ll get better. And I also felt while watching it that the interview would have been more interesting if Hart was the host and Noah was the guest.
2. This was Black as fuck. Was it as Black as Viola Davis quoting Harriet Tubman in a room full of anxious White people; an act that forced at least one to sob a half gallon of salty-ass and delicious-ass White Tears? No. But Trevor Noah having Kevin Hart as his first interview was pretty damn Black. Both literally and, considering how Comedy Central has appointed two Black men (Noah and Larry Wilmore) to follow such beloved cultural figures (Stewart and Steven Colbert), contextually.
Anyway, it’s apropos that this would happen in 2015, because this year has been filled with public-ass Black-ass moment after public-ass Black-ass moment. It’s a clown car of Blackness. A Blackness turducken swallowed by a Black-ass sperm whale.
Any other year, this moment with Noah and Hart would easily be one of the five Blackest moments of the year. Nine months into this Black-ass 2015, however, it barely cracks the top 10.
how they try and cover for Jeb. out of context, my Black behind.
Here's Jeb Bush's "stuff happens" answer in its entirety. His appalling response was not taken out of context. http://t.co/kDbUcce90g— Robert Mann (@RTMannJr) October 03, 2025

I have come to some decisions about who I will vote for in 2016. First off I will be saddened to see PBO’s time in office end. If Joe runs I will vote for him. More than that I will donate to him and commit to work for his election. When PBO said we may have to be a single agenda voter until we have enough legislators to enact gun regulation laws I realized I have to vote accordingly. My order for the primary is
1-Joe Biden
2-Martin O’Malley
3-Hillary Clinton
4-Bernie Sanders
The General is easier in that I will vote for whomever is the Democratic candidate.
See ya later!
Alligator!
1st-n-run! Congrats Chips :) Later ‘gator!
HI BYE!!
Chips, yikes Chelsea is down 3-1
It’s tonight - from 7-10PM. :)
I hope there’s a livestream!
I think I heard the other day that they had the choice of HRC or Joe as keynoter, and picked Joe. Good choice.
There is no one like Pete Souza.
Heading off to go see niece in her first professional fitness/bodybuilding competition! Woot! :-D
Marvelous!
Amazing indeed! What adds to that amazement is that little girl looks exactly like my granddaughter~~~~~~~~who happens to be with me right now and just yelled, “Grammy.” 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍. The hairstyle Aliya has right now is very much like the one in this picture.
:-D
Brilliantly Gorgeous.
Too incredible for words.
Okay, gotta hope. See ya tonight! :-)
hop 😊
Tee-hee-hee… chuckle-chuckle.
Hmmm….Plan for the numerous hit pieces on Obama, de Blasio or other Dem politicians…
Stunning graph, Nena. It needs to be retweeted over and over again.
This is the first time I think I’ve seen a West Wing Week end on such a somber note.
Darn it, he should be included in the debates.
Dems have fewer Presidential Candidates, unlike the GOPers.
yes, they should let him into the debate - he has something to say
Oh, PLEASE, dear universe……….
HOPE
Amen.
THIS. PLEASEOHPLEASEOHPLEASE.
How is this possible?

FLOTUS loves her some Barack :-)
Is this from POTUS tweeter account?
No, it’s from the OFA account. :)
Okay.
I could play the President’s remarks regarding the Secret Service performance over and over again. To receive public praise from your boss is AWESOME!
I did not know you were in the Secret Service, GGail. :)
Anybody here seen my old friend Jane Hamsher? Can you tell me where she’s gone?
Nah; I was mighty happy when she left (certainly from the TV screens).
Firedoglake has shut down. I hear Hamsher has some health problems, but the site has been in the dumpster and struggling for a long time.
Apparently the deranged emoprogs have now all become Bernie supporters.
I wish Hamsher good health, but that site was vicious enough to give tea baggers a run for their money.
Good Saturday afternoon (evening) TOD ….
#LetsRollJoe
Fabulous response, Bob!
Thank you Jacqueline :)
One day, someone at CNN is going to regret the moment they decided to give this guy a platform….
I think expressed violent threats of hate crimes are supposed to be followed by little visits to one’s home, by law enforcement, aren’t they?
Let’s hope so, Jacqueline …. maybe this will help spur a little preventative intervention ….
Thanks, Bob. She may have, but you did it for her, just in case.
Yup :)
Great tweet Bob - thanks :)
I would think so…I (would hope) believe that he’s being given some rope to hang himself…
Thank you hf2 :)
