GM vc. Today’s weather was a welcome relief! I was awakened by rain - heavy rain falling this morning and then I went out for my walk and it was a crisp fall morning with overcast skies. It has since cleared up but the temps are in the 70’s and it’s just glorious. It will be back in the 90’s by next weekend, so I’m gonna truly cherish today’s weather :-)

You’d better cherish it! Seems like the weather gods took our fall heat and sent it your way; I will try to tell myself that that’s fair. My temperature has actually *risen* to 13° celsius since I got up - it was 10° then. The trusty Google says that’s 55.4°F. Whatever google says the bottom line is that I was forced to get rid of my shorts, PLUS add an extra layer of clothing. I am not too pleased, I tell you!

Off to take a HOT shower and head out to the computer store to find a battery for my lap top. She’s been acting up since last night. bbl

    http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2015/10/04/3708887/trump-mass-shootings/\

There isn’t much America can do to prevent future mass shootings, because “that’s the way the world goes,” Republican presidential candidate and National Rifle Association member Donald Trump said on Sunday.
Appearing on ABC News’ “This Week,” Trump told host George Stephanopoulos that he would not be inclined to change any of the United States’ guns laws in the wake of the latest mass shooting, a massacre at a community college in Oregon.
“I can tell you people say ‘Oh, we’re going to stop it,’ it doesn’t work that way,” Trump said. “This has taken place whether it’s this type of crime or other crimes, taken place forever, from the beginning, and you go out a million years from now you’re going to have problems and even if you have a very tough system you’re going to have people that slip through the cracks, and it’s a very sad situation.”
“But no matter what you do you will have problems and that’s the way the world goes,” he added.

    It’s Sunday…so I’ll behave.

One of the most important pieces ever posted at Politico Magazine was written on January 14 by Evan DeFilippis and Devan Hughes. Titled The Myth Behind Defensive Gun Ownership, it’s worth revisiting again:

What do these and so many other cases have in common? They are the byproduct of a tragic myth: that millions of gun owners successfully use their firearms to defend themselves and their families from criminals. Despite having nearly no academic support in public health literature, this myth is the single largest motivation behind gun ownership. It traces its origin to a two-decade-old series of surveys that, despite being thoroughly repudiated at the time, persists in influencing personal safety decisions and public policy throughout the United States.
There is nothing beyond anecdotal evidence and one very flawed study suggesting that defensive use of firearms has benefits that outweigh the obvious societal drawbacks. The conclusion to the article needs to be ingrained into the DNA of the gun control debate:

I see extortion, bribery, and obstruction of justice. The only difference is it’s in the political arena, rather than the private sector.

    Good morning, TOD.
If you are a reader of the NY Times here are things you haven’t been told:
VP Joe Biden was the Keynote Speaker at last night’s HRC gala. Not Hillary. Joe gave a rousing well-received speech.

The Times coverage begins with an extensive review of HRC’s speech given in the morning.
Then you are told she couldn’t be there in the evening because of a prior commitment to SNL.

The implication is that VPB was second choice and barely worth mentioning.
    Propaganda, folks.

This “reporting” was done by Amy Chozick who along with RW Maggie Haberman is the Times duo covering the(D) this cycle.
    ——————————————————————————————-

The Times has failed to note as much as they can, that The Donald and Bernie are turning out massive crowds.
Hillary has not had a large event since her sorry announcement in May or June. Her small events have been unable to fill even the modest venues they book.

The Corporations are going to force the 2016 candidates of their choosing on us with every means at their disposal. If this doesn’t worry you, you are lucky, because it appears to be the future.

    • 86 hopefruit2
      October 4, 2025 at 12:22 pm

Yes, I felt HRC’s appearance on SNL was a tad desperate seeing that SNL doesn’t have the impact that it once did. It was also possibly a ploy to outshine VP Biden, I don’t care what the NYT claims.

      • 87 Vicki
        October 4, 2025 at 12:33 pm

I wonder if the SNL appearance was booked After VP Joe Biden was given the Keynote Honor. To “step on ” his news. A favorite Clinton tactic.

          October 4, 2025 at 1:21 pm

          VIcki,
I read this a.m. that Hillary Clinton turned down the keynote spot in order to appear on SNL. VP Biden, who is the one who got the ball rolling, even before PBO, with his remarks on Meet the Press in 2012, was second choice. Let that sink in: VP Biden, who has been part the administration that has done more for gay rights than any other, was a sub for the wife of the man who signed DADT and DOMA into law. They created the breakfast speaking spot for her after she turned the keynote spot down.

          From the Times article

“The Human Rights Campaign, led by a former aide to President Bill Clinton from Arkansas, Chad Griffin, has deep ties to Mrs. Clinton and had invited her to deliver the keynote address at its gathering Saturday night. But Mrs. Clinton had a scheduling conflict — she was to appear on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” — so the group added a breakfast at which she could speak.”

          http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/04/us/politics/pledging-to-fight-injustices-hillary-clinton-focuses-on-transgender-rights-in-speech.html?_r=0

            October 4, 2025 at 1:31 pm

Seems highly unlikely to me that this is accurate.
SNL appearance could easily have been moved to next week.

            • 91 MadameSoph
              October 4, 2025 at 6:14 pm

              Hi Vicki,
This was the season opener for SNL, expecting higher viewership and press than another week. When I saw that the Human Rights Campaign is led by a former aide to Bill Clinton, who’s from Arkansas, it is completely believable to me that he would have wanted Hillary first. It is also believable to me that she would diss the organization to try to up her “cool cred” with an SNL appearance. Don’t you guys remember Bill getting the GLAAD award? This just seems like the same s#!t to me - no need for conspiracy theories.

    • 92 meta
      October 4, 2025 at 12:32 pm

Serious question: What has HRC done for gay rights, exactly, that she even warrants the keynote at HRC? I guess my memory fails me.

    • 97 Vicki
      October 4, 2025 at 12:39 pm

      Maybe a Sanders shill.
      Maybe a Clinton operative.

So far Bernie has been smart and Not attacked Hillary.

Wayne LaPierre isn’t fit to stand on the same stage as President Obama as if their points had equal validity. The debate on gun sense measures needs to happen in Congress! This isn’t a matter of changing people’s minds as > 80% of voters already want universal background checks. Congress needs to represent the will of the people and protect them over profits of the gun industry.

This headline amazes me. Maybe I’m being a little overly sensitive here because I’m no fan of Sanders but why the comparison to someone who is not running for office this year??? President Obama had 100K people at a few of his rallies but it wouldn’t have meant a darn thing if they hadn’t gone and cast their vote for him. Sanders has yet to prove that he can do both. They make me sick with these silly comparisons.

    • 119 Judith Fardig
      October 4, 2025 at 1:13 pm

This is BS! to compare my city, Bernie got about 28,000 mostly white people while in 2008, Barack Obama got 70,000 and a much more diverse crowd. Bernie riles me with his negativity toward our President, his lack of sincere concern for the lives of people of color, and his pro-NRA votes. UGH! If he ends up being the nominee, I will have to hold my nose to vote for him.
