There isnât much America can do to prevent future mass shootings, because âthatâs the way the world goes,â Republican presidential candidate and National Rifle Association member Donald Trump said on Sunday.
Appearing on ABC Newsâ âThis Week,â Trump told host George Stephanopoulos that he would not be inclined to change any of the United Statesâ guns laws in the wake of the latest mass shooting, a massacre at a community college in Oregon.
âI can tell you people say âOh, weâre going to stop it,â it doesnât work that way,â Trump said. âThis has taken place whether itâs this type of crime or other crimes, taken place forever, from the beginning, and you go out a million years from now youâre going to have problems and even if you have a very tough system youâre going to have people that slip through the cracks, and itâs a very sad situation.â
âBut no matter what you do you will have problems and thatâs the way the world goes,â he added.
One of the most important pieces ever posted at Politico Magazine was written on January 14 by Evan DeFilippis and Devan Hughes. Titled The Myth Behind Defensive Gun Ownership, itâs worth revisiting again:
What do these and so many other cases have in common? They are the byproduct of a tragic myth: that millions of gun owners successfully use their firearms to defend themselves and their families from criminals. Despite having nearly no academic support in public health literature, this myth is the single largest motivation behind gun ownership. It traces its origin to a two-decade-old series of surveys that, despite being thoroughly repudiated at the time, persists in influencing personal safety decisions and public policy throughout the United States.
There is nothing beyond anecdotal evidence and one very flawed study suggesting that defensive use of firearms has benefits that outweigh the obvious societal drawbacks. The conclusion to the article needs to be ingrained into the DNA of the gun control debate:
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND FELT TO THE CORE OF HIS HEART…THIS IS SO HEARTWRENCHING AND YOU WONâT FIND THIS IN THE MEDIA…THEY WONâT PORTRAY PBO GIVING HIS LOVE TO EACH AND EVERY SURVIVING FAMILY MEMBER!…I HAVE TO LEAVE…MY BROTHER COMES TODAY……………………………<3…XOXOXOXO!…MAY GOD DEEPLY BLESS AND PROTECT MY PRESIDENT!
Iâm glad that PBO gets a break in between the many recognitions. Thatâs a lot of standing for him and itâs got to be emotional for him as well as for the families
This ceremony is beautiful - even more touching than I anticipated….may our fallen firefighters RIP, and peace, comfort and healing to their loved ones.
Good morning, TOD.
If you are a reader of the NY Times here are things you havenât been told:
VP Joe Biden was the Keynote Speaker at last nightâs HRC gala. Not Hillary. Joe gave a rousing well-received speech.
The Times coverage begins with an extensive review of HRCâs speech given in the morning.
Then you are told she couldnât be there in the evening because of a prior commitment to SNL.
The implication is that VPB was second choice and barely worth mentioning.
Propaganda, folks.
This “reporting” was done by Amy Chozick who along with RW Maggie Haberman is the Times duo covering the(D) this cycle.
——————————————————————————————-
The Times has failed to note as much as they can, that The Donald and Bernie are turning out massive crowds.
Hillary has not had a large event since her sorry announcement in May or June. Her small events have been unable to fill even the modest venues they book.
The Corporations are going to force the 2016 candidates of their choosing on us with every means at their disposal. If this doesnât worry you, you are lucky, because it appears to be the future.
Yes, I felt HRCâs appearance on SNL was a tad desperate seeing that SNL doesnât have the impact that it once did. It was also possibly a ploy to outshine VP Biden, I donât care what the NYT claims.
VIcki,
I read this a.m. that Hillary Clinton turned down the keynote spot in order to appear on SNL. VP Biden, who is the one who got the ball rolling, even before PBO, with his remarks on Meet the Press in 2012, was second choice. Let that sink in: VP Biden, who has been part the administration that has done more for gay rights than any other, was a sub for the wife of the man who signed DADT and DOMA into law. They created the breakfast speaking spot for her after she turned the keynote spot down.
From the Times article
“The Human Rights Campaign, led by a former aide to President Bill Clinton from Arkansas, Chad Griffin, has deep ties to Mrs. Clinton and had invited her to deliver the keynote address at its gathering Saturday night. But Mrs. Clinton had a scheduling conflict â she was to appear on NBCâs âSaturday Night Liveâ â so the group added a breakfast at which she could speak.”
Hi Vicki,
This was the season opener for SNL, expecting higher viewership and press than another week. When I saw that the Human Rights Campaign is led by a former aide to Bill Clinton, whoâs from Arkansas, it is completely believable to me that he would have wanted Hillary first. It is also believable to me that she would diss the organization to try to up her “cool cred” with an SNL appearance. Donât you guys remember Bill getting the GLAAD award? This just seems like the same s#!t to me - no need for conspiracy theories.

LOL! So Joe Biden is the only one whoâs responsible for Americaâs prisons? Uhm…what about Sanders, HRC, OâMalley (not even mentioning the GOP), all of whom were in office in some capacity or another? This article was clearly written by a Bernie Sanders shill.
Wayne LaPierre isnât fit to stand on the same stage as President Obama as if their points had equal validity. The debate on gun sense measures needs to happen in Congress! This isnât a matter of changing peopleâs minds as > 80% of voters already want universal background checks. Congress needs to represent the will of the people and protect them over profits of the gun industry.
I guess so Dudette but thatâs OK. My BD was last Tuesday and the SoCal TOD folks came to my place to celebrate. If you like you can go to last Sundayâs Chat away and see some of the pictures :)
This headline amazes me. Maybe Iâm being a little overly sensitive here because Iâm no fan of Sanders but why the comparison to someone who is not running for office this year??? President Obama had 100K people at a few of his rallies but it wouldnât have meant a darn thing if they hadnât gone and cast their vote for him. Sanders has yet to prove that he can do both. They make me sick with these silly comparisons.
I'm sorry, I didn't realize he was running against PBO? Bernie Sanders draws more than 20,000 people at Boston rally http://t.co/hc23ZYj3Tf
This is BS! to compare my city, Bernie got about 28,000 mostly white people while in 2008, Barack Obama got 70,000 and a much more diverse crowd. Bernie riles me with his negativity toward our President, his lack of sincere concern for the lives of people of color, and his pro-NRA votes. UGH! If he ends up being the nominee, I will have to hold my nose to vote for him.

Hello again Everybody!!
The One-who-needs-no-sleep has arrived! Greetings again, Dudette, our TOD late night warrior and Auntie Extraordinaire!
Greetings Lady VC!
What is this “sleep” thing of which you speak? I donât think itâs on my agenda for today. What am I missing? Why was I not informed? đ
Not missing much actually, Auntie Extra. :D The “sleep” thing visits select members of our land; I am not usually one of the chosen ones, so we can hang out together and thumb our noses at it periodically. ;)
Ah yes, well count me in on the nose-thumbing. I am, after all, an expert in the art of snobbery. đ
:D :D
I Love my president Obama. I wish he was really my president. We have a horrible Prime Minister in the Bahamas. Can we borrow him please?
Hope you all are safe from that Hurricane!
Nassau is fine but some of the family islands was devastated.
Our thoughts and prayers go to all who have been affected by this. Glad that youâre safe! :)

LOL!!! I know what you mean HF :-)
Could someone explain to me why the NRAâs stranglehold on Congress doesnât meet the definition of racketeering?
I see extortion, bribery, and obstruction of justice. The only difference is itâs in the political arena, rather than the private sector.

Its not racketeering if everyone involved is a crook.
Ah! There it is! Thank you Don!

Wouldnât be surprised if you were right about this.

Hi Vicki,

Serious question: What has HRC done for gay rights, exactly, that she even warrants the keynote at HRC? I guess my memory fails me.
So now Bernie Sanders is trying to cozy up to PBO coalition? NOPE
Good luck with that, Bernie.
Youâve been disrespectful and dismissive for way too long for any of us to trust you now.
Ditto to Hillary.
LOL! So Joe Biden is the only one whoâs responsible for Americaâs prisons? Uhm…what about Sanders, HRC, OâMalley (not even mentioning the GOP), all of whom were in office in some capacity or another? This article was clearly written by a Bernie Sanders shill.
Maybe a Sanders shill.
Maybe a Clinton operative.
So far Bernie has been smart and Not attacked Hillary.
Iâm not sure attacking Joe is part of Bernieâs strategy.
Wayne LaPierre isnât fit to stand on the same stage as President Obama as if their points had equal validity. The debate on gun sense measures needs to happen in Congress! Okay is it too soon to brag some more? đ
Nah, go for it! Bragging news is always positive news and that kind is always welcomed.
And we have an extraordinary President who is taking the time this day to honor all 87 fallen firefighters families <3
