WASHINGTON-She stood behind the podium, eyes lifted just above the microphones. She had performed this poem so many times. But this time was different. She had never read her poetry in front of the first lady of the United States before. Chasity Hale, 16, from Miami Arts Charter School on Biscayne Boulevard was honored as a National Student Poet Thursday morning in the White House Blue Room.

“I was so shocked,” said Hale. “Me? I am one of the National Student Poets? I was amazed.” First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a poetry reading for the five students to honor their achievements. Other students were from Ohio, New Jersey, Arkansas and Alaska. Obama individually mentioned Hale’s work when beginning the event. “I think Chasity said it best,” Obama said. “This is something she said in one of her poems. She said, ‘We’ll use every rusted coin to purchase blessings, and buy plane tickets to destiny.” After being announced by the first lady, each student read one of their poems to the intimate crowd.

This was linked somewhere that I wandered - I don’t think it was TOD ??

The police broke Thabo Sefolosha’s leg. His testimony, and the testimony of witnesses, could mean that they will not get away with it.

    http://www.thenation.com/article/nypd-on-trial-nba-player-thabo-sefolosha-fights-back-after-police-beating/

NBA player Thabo Sefolosha had his leg broken by the New York Police Department, an undisputed fact that is still stunning to contemplate. This week, Thabo has been in criminal court as prosecutors attempt to imprison him for the crime of “resisting arrest”. In actuality, he is being prosecuted for not going away quietly: choosing instead to fight back.

‘When fictional astronaut Mark Watney becomes stranded alone on the Red Planet in the novel and film “The Martian,” people and technology from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, play important roles in his castaway adventure. Acclaimed for its attention to scientific and technical detail, “The Martian” is steeped in decades of real-life Mars exploration that JPL has led for NASA. For more details about how NASA is focused on our journey to Mars, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/realmartians

    Supporting ‘The Martian’

Perhaps most crucial to the story of “The Martian,” JPL designed, built and operated the Mars Pathfinder lander and its Sojourner rover, which landed on Mars in 1997 and operated for about three months. The hardy Pathfinder probe figures prominently into Watney’s ability to communicate with Earth and survive his long ordeal. One of the technical details “The Martian” gets right is that, just as in the story, the real Pathfinder had a reprogrammable computer that an astronaut could, in principle, plug into and control….

The story also captures the famous can-do attitude of JPL engineers, who dive headlong into the challenge of helping communicate with the stranded astronaut and later, launching supplies to help keep him alive. And JPL’s celebrated ingenuity is on display in the navigator who comes up with the solution for how to bring the entire Ares crew home. Since the beginning of the Space Age, JPL has been the world leader in deep space navigation — from being first to conduct gravity assists around other planets to today’s daredevil flybys of Saturn and its moons by Cassini.
Fictional JPL director Bruce Ng is a major supporting character in the story, and like the real JPL directors past and present, comes from a technical background. (The current real-life JPL director tends to dress a bit more formally, but has been known to sport a Hawaiian shirt from time to time.) However, while the heads of NASA, JPL and the agency’s Mars program are portrayed in the story as working through tough challenges on their own, their real-life counterparts rely on teams of scientists and engineers to help provide innovative solutions. Watney finds a creative solution to stay warm on frigid Mars using a power system called an RTG — a radioisotope thermoelectric generator — a “space battery” that converts heat from the natural radioactive decay of plutonium-238 into reliable electrical power. NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover uses just such a power system on Mars today….continued’

…thousands of protesters are preparing to show disagreement with the trip and the president’s agenda. … Over 7,500 people have signed up to attend the event on a Facebook page called, “Defend Roseburg - Deny barack 0bama.” The rally detailed on the page directs protesters to set up in one of two spots, and advised them if they “choose to carry a firearm that is your right,” though they also say to keep weapons holstered or otherwise secured. …

… Roseburg city leaders and the Douglas County Commissioners have both release statements welcoming the president, though. A release from the city, in fact, made point of the fact that others had incorrectly claimed to have been speaking for city against the trip. …

“We wish to be clear that Mayor Rich, City Council President Ryan and the Roseburg City Council welcome the President to Roseburg and will extend him every courtesy,” the release from city officials said.

These schmucks do not represent Oregon! Protesting the President of the United States who is coming to show compassion for families in pain from gun violence shows how heartless and twisted these gun fetishists are. Paul Ryan wants to one day be President of the United States and leader of the free world yet he’s too afraid to take the job of third in line to President of the United States because the GOP teabaggers which is a small minority will bust his chops. He can’t handle these people and get them in line then the GOP is lost and Paul Ryan is not a leader.
