The only thing better would be a picture of President Obama giving that directive to his cabinet while he’s on a golf course with a cellphone in one hand and a golf club in the other.

Didn’t PBO tweet out an invite to the young man Mr. Ahmed (yes, the student with the clock) to come to the White House Astronomy Night?

may be we will see Mr. Ahmed interacting with PBO and all those sharp young and not-so-young astrologers.

    Greetings, fellow addicts!
My day has been “interesting” so far. I woke hours ago to very visible white stuff on the neighbours’ roofs, then I had really lovely sunshine though it was *cold* when I stepped outside to cut some fresh mint. Now it’s sun-less and looking a little cheerless outside, AND I had to cave in and turn on my heater ….yesterday morning. Grrrrr. But it’s great to be alive!

Thanks for the FLASHBACKS, Ms Chips. You know how I love strolling down the Obama memory lane! I’m still pondering a TOD Saturday Night Special of pre-2008 Obama in Action. Maybe one incident per week to sweeten our Saturday nights in the village.

    Have a lovely week, everyone!

      GM vc.

Wonderful weather today in SoCal — overcast (!) and warm (high 70s), just about perfect weather.

BUT… we’ve been absolutely sweltering before this weekend all October — we didn’t bargain for 90F with similar humidity, which is what it’s been the past week — just a teeny bit of rain where I am, so El Nino hasn’t arrived here yet. :(

Just as it seems Fall is here (heard geese on their winter migration last night and tonight)…

      Ugh.

Happy Sunday to y’all. It’s been long since I commented but I do visit everyday. You guys are the best in keeping us informed as in today’s lame stream media nothing of substance is ever brought to the people’s attention. This post is a gem. Those were the days when we all were enthused by the young senator from chi town. I so wish Joe would run.

Smoking gun emails reveal Blair’s ‘deal in blood’ with George Bush over Iraq war was forged a YEAR before the invasion had even started
Leaked White House memo shows former Prime Minister’s support for war at summit with U.S. President in 2002
Bombshell document shows Blair preparing to act as spin doctor for Bush, who was told ‘the UK will follow our lead’
Publicly, Blair still claimed to be looking for diplomatic solution - in direct contrast to email revelations
New light was shed on Bush-Blair relations by material disclosed by Hillary Clinton at the order of the U.S. courts

My goodness, emails again, and from Hillary Clinton of all people. Once you start digging into Hillary’s server only god knows what you’ll find. I’ll tell you one thing, this must be the server of all servers.

….And what is a document that Powell wrote to Bush about Blair’s backing of the Iraq war doing on a private email server at Hillary’s house? When I get home from work I’m going to watch JFK again, maybe I’ll find some answers to what is going on.

And you want to know who else has a private email server, I’ll tell you, a James Bond villain. Right below his fucking helipad that rises up out of the earth with a push of a button. If George Clooney can have his own personal satellite (yes, look it up) I guess Hills can have her own private email server. Ugh! I’m so tired of all these people.

Hi all, this is the first time in three weeks that our house is offspring, grandchild, and even box elder beetle free. There’s an eerie stillness everywhere- no toys to trip over, no little cries to listen for in the night, no special tastes to cook for and no swarming beetles to worry about. I’m so tired, I can barely sit up, but I miss all the goodness of the young energy and hope. I taught our little granddaughter to say, “Yes We Can,” whenever some little challenge came up and it was the one of last things she said to me before she left. Also my reward for painstaking rehearsals of “See you later alligator, was a sweet, “after a while crocodile” and a kiss. I’m still smiling over that one. Hope we hear some good news from VP Biden next week.

    Greetings everyone…

i look at that crowd that was organized in of all places …St Louis…i think of the wondrous things that the President has accomplished….and i am heartbroken at what more could have been done…if not for the obstruction of the GOP and their allies in the media…but also the ODS of the DNC…never to have this President’s back…running from him…first in 2010 then continuing into 2014…and for the citizens who went back to business as usual…not understanding that one has to remain organized and alert….i listen to Bernie Sanders make the outrageous statement about the President leaving “We The People” behind…where if you listen into ANY speech that the President has made…he talks about not being able to do it alone…that we citizens must be ACTIVE in our democracy..i listened to Hillary Clinton..and O’Malley…who made initial comments trying to distance themselves from the President..they all received serious blow back for their comments…however…they all sang a different tune at the debate…none of them were that foolish to bash the President….a lesson learned i think…moving forward…we shall see how all of this will play out…

I wonder what it will be like when he is out of the WH…

i hope that we do not lose sight of him…that would be a tragedy…

i have signed up to be part of the foundation….and remain in contact with a local OFA chapter…

What a blessing it has been to be alive during the Presidency of Barack Hussein Obama..

Pf, the things you have signed up to do-supporting the foundation and staying in touch with your OFA chapter are some of the actions that will make PBO’s influence long lasting. He taught us to organize and to respect, include and empower people into a powerful force for good. That’s not going to stop when he’s no longer in the White House.

    Never have liked the organization

    …………….

    Taking on TFA

Disillusioned Teach for America alumni are striking back at the organization’s neoliberal narratives.

by T. Jameson Brewer & Sarah Matsui

For the first two decades of its existence, Teach For America (TFA) could expect fawning media coverage and unremitting praise. With founder Wendy Kopp and her band of Ivy Leaguer grads, article after article glowed, education inequity in the US had met its match. But over the last several years, the near-universal adulation has begun to wane.

Several school districts have kicked out the organization. Some professors refuse to write student recommendation letters for TFA applicants. And TFA’s high-powered PR department now seems to spend much of its time churning out statements defending itself.

Not surprisingly, the uptick in public criticism of TFA — one of corporate education reform’s totemic institutions — has tracked with increasing opposition to neoliberal education reform. Teacher organizing has been key. Taking its cues from the Chicago Teachers Union, reform caucuses have sprung up in teachers unions across the country. Bill Gates and company, if still powerful, no longer seem indomitable.

Two new books by former TFA corps members seek to heighten that growing skepticism. Unlike previous works, Sarah Matsui (Learning From Counternarratives in Teach For America) and T. Jameson Brewer (Teach for America Counter-Narratives: Alumni Speak Up and Speak Out, coedited with Kathleen deMarrais) both focus on the experiences of TFA alums themselves. The picture that emerges — of overworked, disillusioned corps members — is distinctly at odds with the way TFA presents itself internally and externally.

    • 61 maryl1
      October 18, 2025 at 9:21 pm

The entire idea of TfA is insulting and ludicrous and has been from the beginning. Send people with a few weeks training to teach in the most difficult areas of the United States. The children who need the most competent get people who are not teachers at all. Some have idealistic motives but many are there to add a nice ‘community service’ line on their resumes for law schools and businesses. To me, it’s a perfect example of how little we value our children and their education. It’s cheaper than putting money in to rebuild and restock the schools and paying actual teachers what they are worth.

    The Privatization of Childhood

Childhood has become a period of high-stakes preparation for life in a stratified economy.

    by Megan Erickson

Today, nearly half of American children born to parents with low incomes grow into adults with low incomes, and 40 percent of children born to wealthy parents become high-income adults. In the United States, which has based much of its social safety net on educational mobility, the ability to do better than one’s parents by completing more years of schooling did indeed rise between 1947 and 1977, but it has decreased sharply since.

Correlation of educational attainment between parents and children is now higher in the United States than in European countries, particularly Nordic countries, where a tiny fraction of low-income children becomes low-income adults. As Richard Wilkinson, coauthor of The Spirit Level, has said, “If Americans want to live the American dream, they should go to Denmark.”

Upward mobility has always been the exception to the rule — children born to families in the bottom income quintile have about a 6 percent chance of making it to the top income quintile in their lifetimes — but unfortunately it is a fantasy on which United States welfare programs are now based. Never has pulling oneself up by one ’s bootstraps been more plainly a cruel action than when prescribed as a policy regime for large swaths of the population.

Under Clinton, who delivered on his promise to “end welfare as we know it,” direct aid — itself hardly redistributive — has been replaced with punitive welfare-to-work programs emphasizing personal responsibility.

In 1996, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) become temporary (TANF), and continuous access to government transfers became contingent on filing a tax return (Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC).

Using data from tax records, economist Thomas Piketty shows that both capital income and earned income have grown for the richest families to the extent that in the America of 2010, like the Gilded Age Europe of 1910, the top 1 percent owns the same share of income as the bottom 50 percent, and the top 10 percent own the same share as the bottom 90 percent.
