Germany considers charges against Facebook for hate speech.
The anti-refugee post on Facebook by a 29-year-old Berlin woman last spring seemed little different from many of the hate-filled rants that pop up on social media sites.
“Let’s get rid of the filth,” she wrote. Then, referring to a series of arson fires that have destroyed refugee housing under construction across Germany, she continued: “many more refugee centers will burn, hopefully with the doors boarded up.”
But there was a difference between her words and many others that appear online: She was a German, posting in Germany. And while social media globally might assume a more American character of erring on the side of free speech over censorship, Germany does not share this view when it comes to hate speech.
The woman was charged with violating Germany’s hate speech law, convicted and sentenced to five years of probation. She’s not the only poster to have run afoul of the law: A 25-year-old man from the small town of Passau in Bavaria was fined 7,500 euro (about $8,500) for a Facebook post offering to deliver “a gas canister and hand grenade, for free,” to a group of asylum seekers. A 34-year-old Berlin man was fined 4,800 euro (about $5,500) for posting: “I’m in favor of reopening the gas chambers and putting the whole brood inside.”
Now, with the swelling number of refugees prompting still more such posts, German prosecutors are considering going after Facebook itself for acting as a home for posts that advocate racial hatred and violate laws against neo-Nazi speech.

Republicans have fended off accusations for years that they’d gut Medicare for seniors and end the program “as we know it.”
Not Ben Carson. The former neurosurgeon acknowledges he would abolish the program altogether.
Carson, who now leads the GOP field in Iowa according to the latest Quinnipiac Poll, would eliminate the program that provides health care to 49 million senior citizens, as well as Medicaid, and replace it with a system of cradle-to-grave savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions. While rivals have been pummeled for proposing less radical changes, Carson hasn’t faced the same scrutiny — and his continued traction in polls has left GOP strategists and conservative health care wonks scratching their heads.
“This isn’t a borderline issue. The politics of this are horrific,” said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the American Action Forum and health care adviser to Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

My morning chuckle - today is the date of my beloved late mother’s birth. today is also the day that the biggest hurricane in history is gearing up to land over Mexico and a lot of the US; Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, with rain predicted for California and Georgia. It came up as a surprise to our weather casters out here - then I heard the name of this surprise monster and I fell on the floor with laughter - Hurricane Patricia. Patricia is the name of my younger sister. I had to text her this morning to let her know how proud our mother would be of her - today of all days!!! :D:D :D

Hurricane is predicting rain for CA???
Despite the deluge that caused the massive mudslides last week (where three Transverse System mountain ranges meet — the Sierra Pelona Mountains, the Tehachapi Mountains, and the San Emigdio Mountains — per Wikipedia), have seen only a sprinkling of rain where I am (northwest of LA) since the surprise rainstorm in late July. :(
It is absolutely astounding how quickly Patricia transformed from a standard tropical storm to the most dangerous storm ever in the eastern Pacific.
On Wednesday, the same day that @VP announced he would not be a 2016 candidate, before the #Benghazi marathon yesterday, Patricia was a “minimal tropical storm.”
More on the hurricane, which I fear will be devastating for our Southern neighbors. :(

Several years ago we drove a few hundred miles to go to the “best” Vet Hospital in Ft. Collins, CO. We knew it was hopeless deep inside but we had to try. $700. That was 1998. 😢
You know what, CarolM - I really have no idea if there is pet insurance here or not because I’ve never asked. Over the years more than one friend or colleague has commented on the cost for this or that procedure for their pet, but I don’t remember insurance ever being mentioned.

Cloudy. Rainy. Damp. It will get cooler.
Last evening, I heard a loud noise. I swear, for a second, I thought someone shot at the house. Then followed by a huge crash. It turned out to be a wayward, runaway flying rock from a lawnmower across…… the neighbor. It shattered our storm door. We have a new neighbor. He was sweet…..once I alerted him to the shattered Storm glass door.
Nothing like having a nice neighbor. Their insurance will replace the door and thank goodness for that. Sorry for the long story ;)

Those storm doors are a blessing, when I first moved to Austin my wife suggested we have one installed. It’s like the guy that does my lawn as a ritual launches some sort of projectile towards my front door.
