This “calling out” should have happened a long time ago. Every so called Republican ‘investigative committee’ has been a cheap stunt to undermine the president and Democrats. That some are just seeing or saying this now is inexcusable malfeasance on the part of media commentators.

Yep, and because of gerrymandering, there are no real electoral consequences for them, no matter what they do. They could strip naked and jump around like chimpanzees and they’d still be re-elected. This is the true disgrace of the US electoral system-that we are strapped into a system of grossly distorted state congressional districts that makes electing a Democratic majority literally impossible in many states.

Morning all. I don’t know what states have important elections in ten days, but the stakes are really high here in PA. Not only do we have a host of local elections that determine how municipalities and counties are run, we have Supreme Court races of historic proportions. Not since PA was an English colony have three Supreme Court seats been vacant at the same time. Voters in this state literally get to choose the makeup of this critical body for the next ten years, during which we will have another census and redistricting. We’ve got great Democratic candidates, but getting complacent Dem voters to the polls is a frustrating challenge.

Morning JackieG. After reading your comment, I will be thinking of PA during this time and hoping that your efforts, and that of other concerned and involved PA-ians, will help you all to see the needle move in the right direction. It’s so discouraging when some work their hearts out while others neglect to do even the basics by voting.

Unfortunately, although Dems NOW have the edge in registration, Delaware County will maintain the status quo and reelect a rethug county council and courts. Reason? The county Dems ROYALLY screwed the pooch this cycle — failed to submit petitions with the correct supporting doc, hence, all county DEM petitions and the candidates had to run a write-in campaign during ther primary. Meanwhile, if the LOCAL Dems can file correct petitions, why can’t the county Dems. Write in was successful, however, GOTV has been minimal, and to top it off, Dems pulled out of the ONLY scheduled debate on the DAY OF! In my community, Dems should be able to sweep the four council seats as we have a full slate and the repubs have only one candidate… Saving my pennies to move to St Kitts !

Do not believe it. They did the same thing to John McCain In 2008. There were endless reports of his campaign demise before the republican establishment, along with the media elites decided he was their best candidate to go up against then senator Obama. Jeb Bush is their guy. They’re going to do everything in their power to try and resurrect his campaign. Just wait until late December or early January to see the media change the script by declaring Jeb the comeback kid. Don’t fall for the okey dokey. It’s going to be Bush 3 vs. Clinton 2.

        • 52 amk for obama
          October 24, 2025 at 10:48 am

The rw electorate in 2016 is vastly different from 2008, having moved further and further away to the right. However desperate dumbya 3 in avoiding his family name, it ain’t working. And remember, even in 2008, the rw’ers ditched mittbot, the so called establishment candie, for mccain, the ‘maverick’.

          • 53 Jewelz
            October 24, 2025 at 11:11 am

They ditched Mitt because they thought foreign policy was going to be the main campaign issue (we were in the middle of 2 wars). They were not expecting the economy to take center stage like it did. I mean we had the collapsed of the auto industry, Lehman Brothers, foreclosure, etc. Believe me, if they had foreseen all of that happening before the primary election, they would’ve chosen Mitt Romney. Also, it was McCain’s turn since he lost to Bush 2 in 2000.

Jeb has the money to stay in for the long haul. I don’t see anyone else taking this away from him. I may be wrong, but time will tell. Who do you see getting the republican nomination besides Jeb Bush?

            • 54 amk for obama
              October 24, 2025 at 11:19 am

It’s hard to predict with the current kkklowns and at present, my money is on donald dreck. This is a serious anti-establishment wave fuelled by teabaggers and to be frank, of all the other scary klowns, trump is the least scary. Money alone isn’t going to win dumbya 3 the nomination. The fecker has zero charisma.

              • 55 Jewelz
                October 24, 2025 at 11:34 am

Oh my, I’d love it if Donald Stunk is the nominee. But I don’t think republicans are going to make it so easy for democrats to retain the white house. They want the white house so bad so they can destroy everything President Obama he worked hard to build. They are pure evil. In the end, the republican voters will fall in line with whoever the establishment picks for them. Like they say, democrats fall in love with their candidates, and republicans fall in line.

                  October 24, 2025 at 11:42 am

Normally, they do but not this time. Look at the house disarray and threats to primary mcturtle. The establishment couldn’t control either and if it shoves another shrub down their throat, they are gonna gag and go with not-bush candie.

          GM Jewelz.

          Agree with amk.

Two things are significantly different than 2007, when McBitter was running out of $$$.

          1) Citizens United — think our beloved @VP decision whether or not to run for President would have been different had SCOTUS not upheld this assault on democracy.

          2) #WhitePrivilege MSM legitimizing #racism cloaked in TeaParty and providing coverage to any RWNJ who damned this President — had @GovernorOmalley gotten the press coverage that Ted Cruz got before he was a TX Senator, we might have an actual contest now for Dem Presidential nomination.

Americans who follow politics only when its unavoidable (most Americans) no doubt think there are only two candidates for the Dem nomination now — MSM really is to blame for low name recognition for O’Malley. :(

“Canada has a reputation for dullness. Back in the 1980s The New Republic famously declared “Worthwhile Canadian Initiative” the world’s most boring headline. Yet when it comes to economic policy the reputation is undeserved: Canada has surprisingly often been the place where the future happens first.

And it’s happening again. On Monday, Canadian voters swept the ruling Conservatives out of power, delivering a stunning victory to the center-left Liberals. And while there are many interesting things about the Liberal platform, what strikes me most is its clear rejection of the deficit-obsessed austerity orthodoxy that has dominated political discourse across the Western world. The Liberals ran on a frankly, openly Keynesian vision, and won big.

Before I get into the implications, let’s talk about Canada’s long history of quiet economic unorthodoxy, especially on currency policy.”

    • 69 maryl1
      October 24, 2025 at 10:30 am

This may be petty of me because I’m sure I’d agree with everything he says. However it irritates me that once again, it sounds as if no other world leader reverted austerity. Well isn’t that what President Obama has done for the last 7 years? And yes, we could have done more if the Republicans hadn’t been evil, but President Obama’s policies have kept us streets ahead of other nations who embraced austerity. I realize that the point of the article is about the difference between this and European governments and our own Republicans, but couldn’t there have been a nod toward President Obama who has consistently lead the way on this?

i’m not willing to write off his campaign yet. they did this similar storyline with mccain and money, and then “the news” could build up the big underdog/comeback story that so many people fall for over and over. it was weird those last two presidentials how fast “the news” pivoted from doom and gloom to momentum! one caveat though this time is that “the crazy” has been unleashed like never before in modern times, so that could change the calculus and make the past strategies not work this time in “the news.” republicans/libertarians are good at falling in line when needed though and i still think most of the crazies will robotically back king bush the 3rd, as they’re told to do. still putting my money on a clinton/bush presidential election since “the news” has been trying to build that for years and wants to protect their investment, and then i’m not sure i’ll be able to keep my sanity…for real.

As always, certain people do know how to play the system and get away with millions!

The Bureau of Land Management ‘lamented “Mr. Davis’ deceitful actions.” ‘, but ‘Federal and state authorities in Colorado declined to prosecute Davis for his actions’

    =====================================================================

The nation’s largest buyer of wild horses repeatedly lied to federal officials and sent roughly 1,700 mustangs to the slaughterhouse, according to a scathing federal report issued Friday finding significant oversight lapses within a Bureau of Land Management program that is supposed to provide the horses with good homes.

Between 2008 and 2012, La Jara rancher and livestock hauler Tom Davis bought 1,794 horses from the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program, which manages tens of thousands of mustangs that roam across the West and are, to many, potent symbols of the land’s unbridled majesty. The next-largest buyer purchased 325.

When investigators from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Inspector General confronted Davis about the purchases and asked him how many of those horses had been resold for slaughter, he told them, “Probably close to all of them.”
    ………………………………………

In a written response provided with the report, Steven Ellis, the BLM’s deputy director of operations, said the BLM has procedures in place to make sure wild horses go to good homes and lamented “Mr. Davis’ deceitful actions.”

“The BLM has taken additional steps to strengthen our ability to prevent this type of situation from happening,” Ellis wrote.

In 2013, the BLM implemented new rules eliminating the bulk sale of more than four horses at a time, unless the buyer obtains special approval.

Federal and state authorities in Colorado declined to prosecute Davis for his actions, according to the inspector general report.

Davis could not be reached for comment Friday.

In a statement, Suzanne Roy, the director of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, criticized the length of time it took to produce the report and called on the BLM to take greater responsibility for failing to keep the horses from slaughter.

In the current climate - would end up like the Texas ranchers - the media has well helped develop the meme that the government is bad & these folks breaking the law are just good ole Americans doing their thing. Thus everyone “blames the government” - this happens rarely in other democracies. IRS is another good example - in my world the equivalent (ATO) can investigate anyone anytime without the media or the opposition wanting to “close it down”

And gm from my world - I’m way behind as you would have noticed :)

Ladies and Gentlemen when I tell you my response was one for the ages, it was truly one for the ages. It contained all of my usual charm and sarcasm, and as an added bonus it dripped with contempt. I think Jeb Bush’s problem was that he let himself be defined as opposed to going out and defining himself. In boxing terms President Obama is the classic defensive/counter puncher. President Obama’s best offense is his defense, it didn’t matter how he was being defined, he turned an attack on himself into an introduction of himself. President Obama is the rarest of politicians in that he will let you throw the first punch, because he knows that whatever you throw at him will not define who or what he is. President Obama views all attacks as welcomed opportunities.

I am with Amk on the freak Trump and his path to the GOPer Nomination. Jebbie is now looking more like Perry in 2012. McCain was loved by the Press. He gave them access and they viewed him as the “Maverick” a far cry from how the Press and the RWNJ Press view Jebbie. The MSM like Rubio. Trump provides Ratings for them. “The Parliament is the oldest, the largest, and the most inclusive gathering of people of all faith and traditions. The first Parliament took place in 1893. Since, this historic event has taken place in Chicago, USA • Cape Town, South Africa • Barcelona, Spain • Melbourne, Australia - and now in Salt Lake City, Utah!”

    Excellent read…. http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-way-of-whigs.html

    Doesn’t this sound strikingly familiar?

When it came to Catholics, Know-Nothings recorded a lurid, paranoid imagination in fictional accounts of seditious sex acts and infanticide, stoking the enmity of nativists already not kindly disposed to people they denigrated as “papal slaves” bound to follow their priest’s orders in the voting booth. The longstanding native suspicion of Catholics deteriorated to a new low in the mid nineteenth century, as 3 million immigrants escaping famine and persecution in Europe poured into cities along the Eastern seaboard. Almost half of the new arrivals were Irish Catholics…

Anti-immigrant feeling was the sole requisite for the spread of Know-Nothings, who eventually organized in full public view as the “American Party,” and, for all we know, vowed to “make America great again”…But the Whigs soon found that, having fanned the embers of bigotry to bind divergent interests together, they could no longer control the flame. Someone could always be more anti-immigrant.
