“Here in North Carolina’s third-largest city, officers pulled over African-American drivers for traffic violations at a rate far out of proportion with their share of the local driving population. They used their discretion to search black drivers or their cars more than twice as often as white motorists — even though they found drugs and weapons significantly more often when the driver was white. Officers were more likely to stop black drivers for no discernible reason. And they were more likely to use force if the driver was black, even when they did not encounter physical resistance.”

Good afternoon TOD.
:star:
Congrats COS on First :-)
Thanks NW.
2 x :star:
You’re welcome, COS.
3 million :star: for YOU, NerdyWonka, helping us stay awake as the rain moves in on this quiet Sunday afternoon!! Heads up: Full Moon @ 3.45 Taurus, 27 October 2015, 2:05 am EDT, 5:05 am PDT. Daylight Saving next weekend…
You’re welcome, MP.
bringing my comment over because…
At this early stage in the election process, I have a concern that those who have already decided that HRC is “the one” will have a hard time truly *seeing* anyone else who might be proven to be better suited to be our next President. I don’t count MO’M out yet. I want to see how this process plays out over 2016.
Agree, Gail. And, you can read my commentary in the previous thread about the ‘reality on the ground’ for BHO at this very same time in Oct 2007.
Congrats on 1st COS :)
Another outstanding selection of tweets, NW. Thank you.
And …..
#Hope4ALL
Thanks Bob. I’m just returning to the blog and your recall of the situation is a timely cautionary tale. And I still need to see HRC establish her own code of ethics
I’ve read the tweets and want to thank NW - great selection :-)
Just read this on the earlier thread, GGail - ^5 ^5. It ain’t over by a long shot.
Thanks MP. I want to see how the candidates develop between now and Primary. I think we will see Martin surround himself with some experienced people and then it will at least be a true two-horse Dem race
GGail, I agree with you 100 percent!
Not good ….
okay, I intend to watch this - probably many times;
from this short clip, I can take comfort from the fact I share the same, dashed hopes but respect for VP decision, with Dr. Jill Biden;
eventually, I will be able to handle it better but now it is too soon ……..
same here, Linda. I feel like there has been a death in the family… Going to really take the time to savor and appreciate these last 15 months…
over the past few days, I was too devastated with VP’s choice to say much even here - but I read almost all the commentary.
Yes, it feels like I lost I lost a much loved family member
Thanks meta for the reminder! :)
thanks NW for the terrific tweets. As always, you get a combination of all sorts of tweets from not only this country, but the globe, showing us how we’re connected.
Thanks, Rikyrah. I’m glad the tweets are informative and worthwhile to you. :)
About the tweet with Jeb and the Voting Rights Act:
He says it in Frank Luntz-approved dogwhistles, so somehow, that’s supposed to be more palatable..right?
I don’t think so.
among the MANY reasons why I badly wanted VP Biden to join the 2016 race is that it would force the Dem candidates to compete vigorously for each vote - yes even in Red States.
the competition for votes would force each of them to pay attention to the concerns of minority communities whose support if often taken for granted;
I wanted to see the candidates visit neglected and socio-economically marginalized communities all through the country and at least have their priority concerns become part of the official Dem platform - not just added as an addendum;
so I hope I am proven wrong and that we don’t see Dem candidates:
(a) invest the bulk of the campaign money in main stream media outlets while ignoring minority-serving media outlets;
(b) employ the usual campaign strategists who focus on searching for the illusive regan democrats aka “hardworking American”;
(c) just visit the houses of worship in minority communities during the last weeks of the campaign and belt out a few bars of worship songs;
Ps;
for the African American community, I worry about a number of the CBC who have demonstrated that they are ready to defend one candidate (if needed with their own bodies) without placing ANY demands for their community on the table.
Contrast this with how we often have heard very little defense of PBO from unfair attacks and only heard them jump in front of the camera to loudly criticize him
Linda, the CBC is my sore spot — I remember folks like Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, Yvonne Brathwaite-Burke, Parren Mitchell, Robert Nix, Augustus Hawkins, Mickey Leland, Lou Stokes, Ron Dellums and so many others. These folks would have had PBO’s back. I noted during Thursday hearing, there were all of the usual suspects from the soul patrol in camera shot. Whenever they open their mouths to support Hil, I wonder what was the price… The status quo (Congressional and blackademia) has just been marking time until they can once again earn a few pennies, favors and “access.”
you are absolutely on point.
they were MIA during the Obama years - never saw them defend the President or First Lady..
but, there they were, shinning and grinning for Miss Ann,oops, sorry, Hillary.
Skinning and grinning, I fixed it for you, Rikyrah.
They NEVER defended him, however, they ensured they had aisle seats for every SOTU — photo op for the Obots back home. Mind you, it’s not just the CBC I’m miffed with, there were great republicans and dems back in the 60’s and 70’s; seems like after Nixon, the republicans declare war on America and during Carter, the Dems voluntarily handed over their balls… Back in the 70’s, I used to cut school, hop the train to DC and follow Shirley Chisholm all over Capital Hill; today, I wouldn’t cut a dental appointment to watch these jokers on CSpan…
Oh yes, come SOTU time you can find the entire CBC on the isles waiting for an autograph or a goddamn selfie.
And if Hillary gets elected whatever scraps she throws the CBCs way they will praise her for it.
you bet they will and at the same time continue to minimize what PBO has done
they couldn’t even stand up and defend the First Kids on those occasion on which they were ridiculed or attacked by those heartless people;
history will note the way many members of the CBC and Democratic Party stood silent as PBO, FLOTUS and some members of their team where attacked.
we constantly have to remember how MLK highlighted the damage that is done when people of good will (or those with similar beliefs) remain silent when hatemongering is occurring => the silence of our friends
GlobalCitizenLinda, this was in response to your 6:09 comment — not sure how it ended up down here…
Damn! I thought I was the only one that saw that, jazziz2! That shit made me so mad, I wasn’t mad at Hillary so much as I was mad that they couldn’t show President Obama the same level of giving a fuck and he’s the President.
Don, you bet I noticed but I was so wounded by the VP announcement that I did not trust myself to criticize them in a civil manner worthy of this space;
If you read my comment above about CBC throwing their bodies to defend a candidate - that hearing is exactly one of the things I was talking about
Yes, you and I are on the same page - the CBC and the blackdemia reached my very last nerve a long time ago.
what is wrong with the CBC? What happened to the people who promised that if elected they would fight for our community that so badly needs? why couldn’t they step up just once to defend PBO, FLOTUS and at least the First Kids from the bigoted attacks?
and yes, I noted how they were very vocal in defending HRC this week. what has been promised these people that they don’t think we notice their double-standard? whose interests are they representing?
You are absolutely spot-on, Jazzis! You can include in that group Comgressman (later Mayor of Chicago) Harold Washington.
Oh, yes! He was a FORCE — on the Hill and in Chicago…
Thanks Nerdy - for giving us another great selection of info-tweets, as only you can. :)
:)
niceeeeeeee….love the power that surrounds Serena
I need two naughty mats, phew!
Make that four of them, brother!
Hay Serena, Wow!
60 minutes has started - VP Biden and Dr. Jill are on.
I’m of the mindset that there is something wrong with Dr. Ben Carson.
we think that because he was a neurosurgeon…but what he is saying is finding resonance is some folks…ideas that have existed in the murkey shadows are now front and center…brought to vivid life by the media..
Don, I share your observations about Ben Carson. We must always acknowledge that no one, not even a supposedly smart person, is immune from mental illness! The reported statements by Ben Carson reveal an individual who is totally unhinged.
I agree with you Don! The dr. has lost his mind! If I were a member of his family, or a close friend, I would be urging him to go see a mental health professional! Right now, every thing that comes out of his mouth makes him come across as a clueless, bumbling idiot!

thanks a lot for this!

Thanks Nerdy, fantastic work!
I just watched VP Biden’s interview on 60 Minutes. I’ve followed him a long time during his political career and have never been as impressed with him as I have been these past few years. I know I wasn’t planning to vote for him in 2008 but I sure would have now had he decided to run. I daresay it might have something to do with the fact that Barack Obama brings out the best in everyone.
Hope all TODers are enjoying a nice quiet Sunday night.

Can We Stop Pretending That Ben Carson Is Running for President?
As he quietly suspends his campaign to hawk books, one has to wonder: Is this guy serious?
BY: JASON JOHNSON
Posted: Oct. 22 2015 3:00 AM
There was a time when running for president was actually a money-losing venture.
In fact, over the last 30 or so years, most presidential candidates (including some who actually won) ended up with tremendous debts after the campaign. Being in the red during and after a campaign was so common that paying off a former opponent’s campaign debt was seen as a benevolent form of political stunting. (Thanks, Obama!) But all of that has changed since Citizens United in 2010. Thanks to super PACs and enforcement mechanisms flimsier than tissue paper, running for president can now become a ridiculous money grab if you’re willing to put in the time.
So can we please start to differentiate between those people running for president and those out to get a quick buck and some inflated speaking fees? And we can start with one of the most egregious perpetrators of this new political fraud: Ben Carson.
Very quietly, about two weeks ago, Carson actually suspended his campaign for president. I know that most people probably didn’t notice because they were reeling from a week of Carson lecturing on how to survive a volcano, high-fiving the Confederate flag and dropping dimes on wealthy Popeye’s chicken cashiers, but this did actually occur. There is some nuance to this; essentially, Carson just dropped a new book, A More Perfect Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties, and will go on tour to promote it. To avoid violating campaign-finance rules, Carson, ABC initially reported, was suspending his campaign activities until the next televised debate on CNBC Oct. 28.
http://www.theroot.com/articles/politics/2015/10/can_we_stop_pretending_that_ben_carson_is_running_for_president.html?wpisrc=newsletter_jcr:content%26
didn’t Gingrich do this as well?
I so wanted VP Joe to run, with Dr. Jill at his side. I saw the best chance for the country to continue on the course of President Obama. I also saw how the press was starting to dig for any believed ugliness they could to use against VP Biden. VP Biden, like President Obama, and my father was, intelligent, kind, caring, giving, doing and wanting the best for all. I was starting to get physically ill the direction their attacks were going. VP Biden deserves some peace and love at this point in his life. I will vote Democrat in each and every election, for us, for President Obama and VP Biden, I owe them that much.
Thank you Nerdy for your timeless tweets. I will have to go back and watch the interview. I was fixing supper when it started and at a critical point so missed the first part. :-(
I also watched the interview. Journalists can be so crass. Grief doesn’t follow a pattern, or a timeline, nor does it go in one direction, it lies low for a while, then comes back and whaps you unexpectedly. He is just five months out, and there are still surprises for him and his family. Today is three months for me…….I have no idea what is ahead, but will just have to go through it. He would have been a great president….. love him, for his reality, his honesty, his integrity, but can totally sympathize with him. Grieving saps all energy…..physical, emotional, spiritual, and who knows better than Joe, after what he’s been through. He would only run, as he said, if he could give it his all and win. This was a hard decision for him, I know. I love him more than ever after watching tonight.
Losing a child of any age is devastating. It never leaves you, speaking from experience.
Carolyn, thank you for those on target words about grief. Indeed there is no time table and one never knows when a wave, large or small, will hit. You can’t control it, stop it. Can’t go around it……must go through it. Just as you could, I can understand VPB’s decision and respect it.
Three months for you. Bless you. I hope you find new strength and peace each day. ((((HUGS))))
Beautiful thoughts, carolyn. My mom passed away in 1998. I am still missing her and not a day goes by that I am not affected by the loss of her. I understand his grief, and yours. It never goes away, it just gets liveable again.
Thank you Carolyn for this beautiful comment that expresses so well the depth one goes through after losing a loved one.
Not savvy in posting those embedded vids, but will give this a try. Hope it’s real. :)

My bottom line ….

Breathtakingly beautiful:)
yes
One word, Lovely.
Hmmm, Madame Secretary. Like it!
He has been a man on a mission and that mission has been to ignore the Second Consecutive Least Productive Congress In History. Obama has used his presidential powers and influence (which Republicans seem to think mean his dictatorial powers rather than his Constitutional powers bestowed upon him for winning the general election twice) to continue the progress his administration has made and to leave the country in good hands for the Democratic president our country will elect in 2016.
