Having taught in K-12 and a Community College setting for 35 years I was appalled. The only reason to lay hands on a student would be if they were physically attacking someone or had a weapon. This is inexcusable.
In our liberal CA community it was brought to our attention that our schools had the 4th highest expulsion rate in the State of CA. We were horrified. It surprised folks and caused several groups to research other options.
We now have a system in the Santa Rosa City Schools called “Restorative Justice”. It has dramatically reduced expulsion and suspension rates and …. drum roll …. Saved the schools hundreds of thousands of $$ because kids are staying in school and bringing in more funds for school budgets.
If teachers have training in de-escalating situations the cop would not have been called and the teacher could have learned a little more about the girl and realized she was lonely and needed a friend.
Here is a video about how Restorative Justice worked in Santa Rosa – google restorative justice and see if it could work in your area.

This is my world. Kitties decided they couldn’t sleep and bugged me for treats at 4 a.m. until I got up. They go in the kitchen and rub the bag of food with their faces and it makes so much noise I can’t sleep. Then they come up to my face while I’m in bed and yell, “Meow!” (translation: “Treats!”) Luckily I didn’t have to wake up early, but still didn’t get a full night’s sleep. >^..^< Love them so much, in spite of it all :-)

I saw an awesome!! PBS documentary a few weeks back about Lincoln and the Gettysburg address. One of the more interesting things was how critical the wire (telegraph) system was to him. He pretty much ran the war command out of the telegraph room. Of course those were typically short messages back and forth as well (proto twitter!)
I’m sure honest Abe would not at all be surprised or vexed by this new fangled twitter thingy. :) of course, this type of brevity may have also influenced the length and precision of the Gettysburg address. also, since the speech was short enough to be sent via telegraph it was one of the first ‘viral’ speeches in history.

My consolation for FLOTUS’ trip is in knowing that PBO wouldn’t let her go anywhere that he couldn’t ensure her safety. She’ll be okay and It will be a fabulous trip.

It scares me, too, and I think the very fact of its danger pushes people to recognize how important her work is there. Girls are living in desperate situations, with no voice, and no future but housework, babies, and abuse. I admire and salute her, and I also plan to light some extra candles for her safe return.
Sorry if that sounds preachy- mostly trying to convince myself! I do believe the shock of her taking on such a dangerous trip brings more attention to the issue than anything else she could do. Brave lady!

I’ve heard that the police officer has been fired. My next question is what on earth is the policy within that school (district) on how to handle uncooperative students? Why on earth would a teacher or administrator in that school think that it would be okay to call the police to remove a non-violent student from a classroom? Is this standard operating procedures in South Carolina? My first instinct is to blame the teacher or principal but I’m beginning to believe that this is somehow what they think they were supposed to do? The reality is that had this not been recorded no one outside of that classroom would have known about it. The only saving grace in this horrible nightmare is that it has put the spotlight on what apparently has been an okay practice that was sanctioned at the very least at Spring Valley High but at worse the entire State. Hopefully these practices are now in the process of changing….
Many high schools and middle schools now have SROs-can’t remember the actual words, maybe service esource officer? - who re police officers. The original goal was to have them trained in deescalating crisis situations. Talking quietly to the student, finding a staff member the student is close to, finding a friend to talk to them, calling the family are some of the ways they SHOULD be trying to defuse the situation. They were also meant to provide the students with a positive relationship with a police officer, and to help head off trouble before it starts. You can see how badly some have strayed from that model.
I have been wondering that myself, Donna. I remember plenty of kids that disobeyed the teacher or disrupted class and plenty that argued with teachers, but the teacher handled it or the parents were called and the kid spent the day in the Principal’s office until they got there. If a student refused to go, the teacher didn’t wrestle them to the ground, let alone call the police to do so!! What in the hell are police doing on a school campus anyway?!
Something that has been bothering me is that this was an adult man putting his hands forcibly all over a teenage girl, and a big, burly man at that. In what universe is that o.k.? If for some reason (and I don’t see it) this student needed to be physically removed from class, why wasn’t a female called? I can’t help but think that this girl’s color is why we are not hearing about this aspect of the incident. Just imagine if a big, burly black man (officer, teacher, whatever) put his hands around the neck and body of and then dragged a white underage female student?
This was so very wrong on multiple levels.
