      What is it about these R candidates that they WILLINGLY make asses of themselves, even without the help of opponents? Do any of them have advisers? They been given boatloads of money by billionaires. Couldn’t they spend a dime or two on image consultants? Wake up, Florida, and demand your money back on this guy.

    George Lucas Gifts $10 Million to Support African American & Hispanic Students at USC’s Film School

    By Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and Act

    October 27, 2025 at 6:53PM

    The George Lucas Family Foundation has announced a 10 million endowment that will support the recruitment of talented USC School of Cinematic Arts students from communities that are underrepresented in the entertainment industry.

    The gift, which is the largest single donation for student support in the school’s history, will establish The George Lucas Foundation Endowed Student Support Fund for Diversity, which will provide financial support for African American and Hispanic students enrolled at the school, meaning African American or Hispanic students at the undergraduate and graduate levels will receive priority consideration.

    Student support will be split equally between male and female students who will be known as George Lucas Scholars or Mellody Hobson Scholars.

    The first recipients will be awarded for the fall of 2016.

      Rikyrah, I hope this endowment uncovers great talents in the years to come. My son graduated from USC and Lucas as one of the commencement speakers-he’s a good man with a generous heart. Now watch the screams from non African American and Latino students.

      While I get where people are coming from about the character of Juliette, I will say that to me she was not properly fleshed-out in season one many times she did appear to be the damsel in distress but there were enough of situations where looked strong the problem was that those time were limited (episode entitled “Big Feet” where she found the biological connection that to her theory of “animal human hybrid”. Still poorly written hopefully this season goes back to more creatures and fleshing out “The Keys”

    Good morning, TOD! The 2008 Widener rally brings back memories. That was the day that I realized that maybe, just maybe, BO was not of this planet! It was a COLD, COLD, COLD day; it wasn’t “rain,” it was a MONSOON! I worked the event, and flew my then 7 yr old grandson in from RI so that he could meet BO. We were dressed in winter coats & boots, covered by rainsuits; BO had on this flimsy, lightweight wind breaker and NO umbrella! We got sick from the elements; BO didn’t even get a scratchy throat! I really suspect he is NOT of this world…

    You really know how to bring joy to a gray day, Chips. It’s a miserable, dark, rainy and cold here with more to come, but our POTUS with a small child and FLOTUS jumping for joy cheers any day. Our area ‘decrees’ when kids can celebrate Halloween, so it looks like the little ones will have to brave the rain tomorrow-the only ‘allowed’ time for trick or treating.

    i’m worried for this girl who was abused by the cop in the classroom. she obviously has significant issues to handle in her life before this happened through no fault of her own, and now she’s going to be used as a political football by “the news” and activists. they’ll use her for their own purposes, then move on to the next outrage. she needs a lot of one-on-one help over a long, sustained time, probably years. no amount of “gofundme” campaigns will help without first taking care of this young lady’s emotional and physical well-being.

    the clockmaker ahmed has a strong family and friend support network, and could handle the circus. this girl apparently does not, and i hope some people who realize this are able to step in to protect her from this insanity for the long haul.

      (My comment from previous thread)
      What I don’t get is why the teacher didn’t ask the “unruly” girl (if you believe @cbsradionews — it’s their lead story this morning and that’s the term they use — gah) to stay after class and then actually talk to the girl — especially if she’s a new student… my guess is that it’s Teaching 101 to acknowledge that the teacher knows how uncomfortable/traumatic it is to join a class after it has started (student feels like an outsider because everyone in class knows each other’s names and the new student is playing catch up).

      Why didn’t teacher ask student to stay after class to talk? Or if other classes interfered, set up a time to do so? (Didn’t have campus police at public school in my day.)

      * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

      Here’s an article that addresses this question, and IMHO, it’s appalling (not the article, but what it’s like to attend public school in the USA today):

      From the article:

      “the deployment of an estimated 14,000 officers on campuses across the country, a number of them carrying weapons, and a number of them now tasked with duties that go well beyond holding shooters and gangsters at bay.”

      and…

      “In many districts across the country, common discipline problems that were once the purview of teachers and school administrators are being handed off to armed police officers. And infractions that once resulted in detention may now leave students with criminal records — a phenomenon that critics say disproportionately affects African American students.”

    Daughter unit report just now. She was the furst to make a case presentation today afternoon before an audience of about 100 PG docs and a 3 senior consultants panel. What was normally supposed to be a routine 30 minute session, went well beyond 2 hours with the panel trying to nail her any way they can and they couldn’t. After the session she got a spontaneous applause from the audience and one of the panelist docs asked the audience for an encore saying her presentation was detailed, flawless, methodical, very analytical and dig this, her handwriting was excellent (not befitting a doc). :)

    Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will attend multilateral talks on finding a political solution to the conflict in Syria in Vienna this week, a government spokeswoman has said.

    It will be the first time Iran - an ally of President Bashar al-Assad - has attended such a summit with the US.

    Representatives of Russia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey will also attend the talks.

    Earlier, the US said an invitation had been extended to Iran - a move Syria’s Western-backed opposition questioned.

    The main round of talks is expected to take place on Friday, but diplomats say some preparatory meetings could happen on Thursday evening.

    so a republican “debate”/talking point delivery vehicle is tonight? i’ll test my ability to predict the future:

    doesn’t matter if king BUSH the 3rd trips walking on the stage, vomits on his podium, holds snakes and speaks in tongues, “the news” headlines for tomorrow are already written. some form of these…

    “jeb comes roaring back”
    “where has this jeb been?”
    “don’t count out jeb”

    within a day or two, some polls will be out showing a surge for BUSH3 up 10-15% to help back up the false story, and within a week a poll or two will have him in the lead. literally doesn’t matter what he does tonight. “the news” will attempt to make this happen. they already did this with carly fiorina in the last debate to help elevate her for v.p. consideration later. only wildcard now is if “the crazy” has been unleashed too much and won’t fall in line enough to make this plan work as it has the last few presidential campaigns. hope i’m wrong, but with what i’m seeing already today in “the news” i bet this prediction will be somewhat accurate.

      I think you are 100% right about the media’s narrative but I don’t think the polls with substantiate it. This years voting Republican block has lost their collective minds and are determine not to be supportive of what they view as the “moderate electable” candidate and there is no swinging them back to sensibility. They feel they did this with McCain and Romney and are not in the mood to go down that road again. From everything I’ve read and followed the Republican voters really don’t like Jeb much at all. The only thing that keeps him at 5-7% is that he has the establishment voters squarely in his corner. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.

    Important Read:

    The reason I was skeptical is that I had previously read a very informative breakdown of the various House Republican factions by David Wasserman and Amy Walter at The Cook Political Report. They looked at 5 votes this session and plotted the various Republican factions based on how often they voted with Speaker Boehner:

    * 46 “Dependables” 5 out of 5 times,
    * 40 “Allies” 4 out of 5 times,
    * 59 “Helpers” 3 out of 5 times,
    * 52 “Skepticals” 2 out of 5 times,
    * 25 “Agitators” 1 out of 5 times, and
    * 19 “Rebels” 0 out of 5 times.

    Washerman and Walter summarized these divisions further by calling the first two groups the “Coalition of the Willing” (86 members), the second two the “Deciders” (111 members), and the third two the “Coalition of the Unwilling” (35 members).

    HI All

    Having taught in K-12 and a Community College setting for 35 years I was appalled. The only reason to lay hands on a student would be if they were physically attacking someone or had a weapon. This is inexcusable.

    In our liberal CA community it was brought to our attention that our schools had the 4th highest expulsion rate in the State of CA. We were horrified. It surprised folks and caused several groups to research other options.

    We now have a system in the Santa Rosa City Schools called “Restorative Justice”. It has dramatically reduced expulsion and suspension rates and …. drum roll …. Saved the schools hundreds of thousands of $$ because kids are staying in school and bringing in more funds for school budgets.

    If teachers have training in de-escalating situations the cop would not have been called and the teacher could have learned a little more about the girl and realized she was lonely and needed a friend.

    Here is a video about how Restorative Justice worked in Santa Rosa - google restorative justice and see if it could work in your area.

        Thanks Gail

        Teachers and Administrators go into the work because they want to help kids - then they end up with “zero tolerance” policies that hurt everyone. This system can also be used in Juvenile Hall, and in Australia I think it is a main part of the entire criminal justice system. If anyone knows more about this, please add to the discussion.
