Ryan dismisses calls for family leave law
    By Scott Wong

New Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Sunday dismissed Democrats’ calls for a paid family leave law as another “federal entitlement,” and said his position isn’t at odds with recent remarks that he wants to spend weekends with his young family in Wisconsin.

“I don’t think people asked me to be Speaker so I can take more money from hard-working taxpayers, so I can create some new federal entitlement,” Ryan said during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” “But I think the public wants to have members of Congress that represent them, that are like them.

“Don’t you want your member of Congress to be a citizen legislator who lives with you, among you, who has your own kinds of concerns, who wants to spend time with his children on Saturdays and Sundays?”

Hi all. I’m racing off to do set up and decorating for our Salsa the Vote Event, which starts at 6:00 this evening. Clean up and take down won’t start until well after 8:00 tonight, so it’s going to be long day. Please send positive thoughts our way that we get a good turnout and some real enthusiasm for our candidates. We have terrific people running for office and they could all be winners if people would only turn out. Wish us luck!

I heard on NPR that Republican Hispanics told the RNC if they don’t stop this rhetoric in the primary “don’t look for their votes in the general elections”. Sounds like the GOP don’t care or won’t endorse Trump if he makes it that far.

The sad thing is that these guys show not an ounce of ‘growth’ over the past six years! It boggles my mind that as a group they are all so small-minded and determinedly mean - totally messes with my personal theory that there’s a bit of good in the worst of us.

Bofr, I’ve been discovering that during these years of watching the Republicans ‘up close’ - a disturbing, yet eye-opening experience. What generally leaves me with mouth hanging open (at least in the beginning) was that they perform with such seeming unawareness of the impact of their actions on peoples’ lives. smh

Why Marco Rubio is so effective and dangerous

    By Greg Sargent October 29

Marco Rubio bashed the mainstream media with great gusto last night, eliciting roars of approval from GOP voters. Amusingly enough, the emerging media consensus appears to be that his attacks on them were brilliantly executed, never mind that they were pressed into service to evade just the sort of legitimate questions the media has been pressing him upon.

But it’s worth drilling down on one key reason why Rubio is so effective and dangerous — to his GOP opponents, and potentially in a general election as well. It’s this: Rubio knows how to feed the angry preoccupations of many GOP base voters while simultaneously coming across as hopeful and optimistic.

The expectation going into last night’s debate was that a showdown was inevitable between Rubio and fellow Floridian Jeb Bush, who has to reassert his position as the dominant establishment alternative to Donald Trump (or, now, Ben Carson, though his rise seems likely to prove fleeting). This required putting Rubio, who is trying to usurp that role, in his place.
    ……………………………………

A lot of conservative primary voters may well hear such talk and conclude Jeb Bush is talking down to them — that he mostly has contempt for their preoccupations and fears. But Rubio has shown an ability to speak directly to those preoccupations and fears while simultaneously sounding the sort of hopeful, optimistic, forward-looking tone that fits comfortably with Jeb’s theory about the need to broaden the party’s demographic appeal.

This isn’t just because Rubio is young and Latino. His formula is a bit complicated. Last night, Rubio, in what appeared to be an appeal to the deep resentment of many of these voters, skillfully converted legitimate questions about his personal financial management into evidence of Democratic and elite media contempt for his relatively humble upbringing, which he proceeded to explain he had overcome through hard work. Rubio’s narrative is both laden with legitimate resentment and inspiring!

6,000 prisoners are going to leave prison on an early release program brought to us by President Obama.
I watched CNN for the first time in months (years, maybe?) and won’t make that mistake again.

Poppy Harlow covered this story without mentioning The President once!!!! The release of people who were incarcerated for unjustly lengthy sentences was presented as a danger to the rest of us.

Instead of credit for a compassionate approach to our fellow humans, CNN gave us NYC Police Commissioner Bratton who concern trolled and the ex-prisoner Ben Kerik who wrung his hands and played on our fear and hate responses.

CNN is disgusting hate mongering filth.

Ari Melber is tweeting that POTUS will be making significant criminal justice reform announcements tomorrow. I am eager to hear what our sensational President has to say.

Never fear, as soon as one of those released individuals does something, anything, that could fan the flames of outrage, President Obama’s name will be used repeatedly in every news story. Wearing decent clothes, when more worthy Americans go to thrift shops? Got a job that some more worthy American should have gotten? Didn’t get a job and was seen talking with a friend, when more worthy Americans are at work? Smiled while walking outside on a pleasant day? Whatever- all Obama’s fault.
