G’morning Chips, TOD, even amk, lurkers, and congrats Sir Don on #1! :) Happy Monday everyone. :)

Is our President going to make a major announcement on criminal justice reform this afternoon at Rutgers?

Morning Chips and TODers. Last night’s ‘Salsa the Vote’ was larger, more lively and more successful than last year’s. We had a good crowd, lots of people danced, the food was great and plentiful and, most of all, there seemed to be real enthusiasm for our candidates. At one point, someone asked those who intended to vote on Tuesday to stand and everyone in the room rose and clapped. My poor husband, recovering from the flu and looking ashen, said to me that if people didn’t see this as the future they were blind. At this point the Hispanic Initiative that Mr. G and I started together in 2012 has taken on a life of its own and is really ready to be passed on to a completely Latino leadership. I suspect that both the Salsa the Vote and the summer Fiesta Latina are going to become recognized events that people will anticipate and other counties will copy. We’ve worked very, very hard in these last years, but it has been so worth it to see the connection grow between Latinos and Democrats. Many Latinos in our county who could once not even tell the difference between the parties, now see the Dems as the good guys who really reach out and care about them. I’m exhausted, but really happy with what’s happening here.

Such great news! SO glad that this was even better than last year and that people seem to be engaged and paying more attention…they BETTER VOTE EVERY TIME! The exhaustion is worth everything if this becomes an annual event that educates and engages. Proud of both of you:) ALL of you! You did good:)

        November 2, 2025 at 8:21 am

Thanks, Df. I think what we’ve shown is that anyone who cares enough can do this in their county. If you wait for an “institution” like the local Democratic party to do this, it won’t happen. The energy for change has to come from individual people who really want to to get something started and aren’t scared of the work involved.

          November 2, 2025 at 8:25 am

I understand…and agree:) You want something done, do it yourself or you could be waiting forever….been there! SO proud of you for noticing this issue needed to be addressed and just getting it done. You are a true example for organizing in your community to make it a better place.

          November 2, 2025 at 8:57 am

Woot! You can say that again jg! So glad to hear how well your event and especially about the enthusiasm of everyone there
A couple if things struck me as odd about the Hillary event in Atlanta the other day: Georgia state rep Stacey Abrams very powerfully spoke about there being 700,000 people in Georgia who are eligible bur unregistered to vote - 500,000 of them people of color. Here we were at a rally for the person mostly likely (at least for now) to win the Dem nomination and there was no conspicuous presence of the State Democratic Party - no table of people signing folks up to volunteer or to register to vote, not even any Dem Party signs.
I saw a few flyers being passed out about voter registration but not among the lines where mostly students were standing or to anyone sitting in the gym. You’d think at the very least they’d have signs plastered all over with the URL for online registration and/or lists of places you can go to do it in person. Why aren’t there PSAs about this blasted all over radio and TV?

            November 2, 2025 at 9:02 am

Agreed and made a comment to that effect when you posted from the venue…ALL of these town halls and speaking engagements should have tables for VOTER REGISTRATION TO HAPPEN! This isn’t hard to do. I have registered voters countless times! This is really a no brainer…wtf is the disconnect here??!! Perfect time to do this….and those candidates need to ALWAYS speak about the responsibility of voting and what happens when you don’t!~

            • 12 jackiegrumbacher
              November 2, 2025 at 9:29 am

The disconnect is between the local party and the campaign. If the local party fails to get its act together, the campaign has been to be organized enough to step in, meaning it has to get the appropriate state registration forms, learn the deadlines and have enough knowledge to answer basic questions about state voting requirements. Hillary needs to start making this SOP, especially in states with early primaries.

This is how it was with the President …here in Philadelphia…there was a big disconnect….he had to create his own structure….the DEM party structure is afraid of the grass roots…they want to keep power in their own hands…

          • 15 jackiegrumbacher
            November 2, 2025 at 9:24 am

Dudette, that is the very reason why the Obama campaign bypassed the Democratic Party and set up their own registration tables at every event. In every county, the campaign came in and created a registration and GOTV structure that was separate from the party structure. If a local party worked with the campaign, everyone won, but some people resented the intrusion on their turf and wouldn’t cooperate. The O campaign succeeded by not letting the Dem party structure impede it and Hillary is going to have to replicate this pattern if she wants to succeed. I believe the reason why mid term elections aren’t successful for Dems is because they must rely on state and local parties to do the work, since it’s only the big national, well funded campaigns that can afford the enormous cost of a multi-tiered ground staff.

    OBAMA BANS THE BOX

    By Ari Melber

    —————————-

On Monday, President Obama is announcing a new order to reduce potential discrimination against former convicts in the hiring process for federal government employees and contractors.

It is a step towards what many criminal justice reformers call “ban the box” – the effort to eliminate requirements that job applicants check a box on their applications if they have a criminal record. While the rule was once seen as a common sense way for employers to screen for criminal backgrounds, it has been increasingly criticized as a hurdle that fosters employment discrimination against former inmates, regardless of the severity of their offense or how long ago it occurred. Banning the box delays when employers learn of an applicant’s record.
    .
    .
The President is announcing several other measures Monday, including public housing and money for re-entry programs, and he is speaking about prison reform in a speech and an exclusive interview with NBC Nightly News Anchor Lester Holt.

    Good morning TOD.
Yesterday I wrote that CNN covered the story of the 6,000 prisoners getting early release today Without mentioning POTUS once!!! It’s his initiative!
This morning the NY Times short article on page 10 needs 8 paragraphs before a passing mention of The President when they discuss today’s historic releases..

The good work that President Obama continues to do is going to be kept out of the view of the American people as much as the media finds it possible it seems.

All that will get attention is the People Magazine and National Enquirer type of celbritynews/gossip/bullshit that fills the air and column inches.

Because, when the judge asked for the receipts for where these women would go for their healthcare, they gave him some bullshyt list, not thinking that the judge has a staff that would VERIFY that the people on the list could be legitimate providers……

the judge found chiropractors and dentists and all sorts of folks that didn’t qualify.

The judge then pointed this out, and asked for a list of LEGITIMATE PROVIDERS that could be used as alternates to Planned Parenthood.

The list returned had less than 50 names on it.

      thus…THIS!

And speaking of Jon Stewart, I see he’s opening up an animal sanctuary. Hey, I like animals, and animals need protection. But this guy spent his entire career mocking politicians about their different positions. This guy walked around like he was the fucking grand poohbah and he had all the fucking answers when it came to politics. The way he was talking it gave the impression that once he left tv he has going to join the fight. But no, this guy runs to New Jersey and opens up an animal sanctuary. Once again, I love animals and they need protecting, but if you’re going to talk a good game at least get in the game when the chance arises.

The Texas county where only 12 people signed up for Obamacare

Why the uninsured in Borden County may stay that way as the health law’s third enrollment season begins.
    11/02/15 05:11 AM EST

GAIL, Texas — In rural Borden County, 12 people signed up for Obamacare this year.

Livid over the government telling them they must buy something and loath to take anything that looks like a “handout,” the uninsured here are likely to stay that way. As Obamacare’s third open enrollment season began Sunday, this rock-solid conservative community of about 650 people offers a window into the challenges health law advocates face to expand coverage around the country.

“Health care is fine, if you can afford it,” said Brenda Copeland, a middle-aged woman who works at the Coyote Country Store and café, along with her two grown daughters, all of whom are uninsured. Copeland has had health insurance only once in her life, and opted to pay Obamacare’s tax penalty earlier this year rather than buy a plan.

“I hope Obamacare goes down the toilet,” she added.
