Things just got real

Vladimir Putin’s Excellent Syrian Adventure was all fun and games so long as he was hitting Bashar al-Assad’s enemies (which rarely meant Daesh until that group downed a Russian airliner) and those enemies couldn’t fire back.

However, Russian pilots had the unfortunate habit of straying into Turkish airspace. This was understandable, as the air space in the war zone was rather tight. But the Turks warned Russia after the last incident that another violation of their airspace would bring about a response.

Today, a Russian jet again strayed into Turkish airspace. According to Turkey and the coalition command in Baghdad, Turkey warned the Russian plane ten times to leave its airspace. The Russians either didn’t hear the warnings, or ignored them, at which point Turkey downed the Russian jet. The pilots ejected, but didn’t survive. (The details of their deaths are still sketchy, but it seems that Syrian rebels shot them down.)

Mr. Putin, desperate to show that Russia is still an important power aside from its possession of nuclear weapons and a veto on the Security Council, decided to go in militarily to prop up his client Mr. Assad. At the time that he did so, I said that Russia had learned nothing from its adventure in Afghanistan.

It’s even worse. NATO warplanes weren’t flying over Afghan skies in the 1980s. Syria is even more of a quagmire than Afghanistan, and prone to something Afghanistan wasn’t: direct confrontation with NATO air forces.

Mr. Putin calls the downing of his fighter a “stab in the back”. But, it was a predictable outcome. Once Russia became involved in the Syrian fighting, it was only a matter of time before an incident like this occurred.

What happens next? I’m not a prognosticator. But a NATO member nation shooting down a Russian jet is not a good development. This is why Ben Carson’s casual talk of imposing a no-fly zone over Syria and shooting down Russian jets if they violated it was so insane. I’m not saying this one incident will lead to a wider war; but it’s not something to be taken lightly. Here’s to hoping cooler heads prevail.

“Yesterday the Minnesota 7th Congressional District Republican Party posted the following statement on their Facebook page: “MN ‪#‎DFL now propose a “special session” to deal with their self-created “‪#‎Negroproblem”. You don’t have to look far to find ignorant hate speech masquerading as acceptable party messaging. However, this is not the first time the Minnesota Republican Party and their affiliates have posted racially insensitive material.”

Donna, sometimes I think I’m in a time warp and have gone back to the 1940’s. Then I realize I’m learning about these things on a computer and it’s 2015, which means decade after decade has gone by and these knuckleheads have not progressed one iota.

Republicans are straight up racists. There is nothing they could say that would shock me at this point in time. Trump tweeted a racist lie about Blacks and not one Republican leader/politician called him out for it. Neither did any Republicans call Trump out for supporting the beat down of a Black protester at his Birmingham rally.

      They’re pathetic.

THERE’S AN ONGOING hostage situation in the northern French town of Roubaix near the Belgian border.
RTL says that several people have been injured when a Kalashnikov was fired at police during a traffic stop.
A number of other news outlets are quoting medical services and are reporting that a number of people have been injured.
News outlet iTele are reporting that a number of men fired at police during an attempted robbery and are now holed up in a house.

The only reason I’m not worried about getting shot in a church is because I don’t go to church, but my friends and family do. http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/kentucky-governor-restores-voting-rights-felons-35391201

About 15 years ago, Mantell Stevens spent 30 days in jail for drug possession. He has not been able to vote since then.

The 36-year-old Lexington resident pleaded guilty to a felony, which means he lost his right to vote under the state constitution. And because Kentucky was one of four states that did not automatically restore people’s voting rights once their sentences were completed, Stevens never got it back.

On Tuesday, an executive order from Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear changed that. His order will automatically restore the voting rights of people convicted of certain felonies as long as they meet specific criteria.

“Being able to participate in democracy and being able to vote for elected officials is so important,” said Stevens, one of an estimated 180,000 Kentuckians who are out of prison but cannot vote because of their felony convictions. “I think I’m able to possibly elect some officials that might help better my community.”

Beshear’s order does not apply to anyone convicted of bribery, treason, violent crimes, or sex crimes. It does not apply to people who have other pending charges or arrests. And it does not apply to those who have been released from prison but have not paid their court-ordered restitution.

I am suspicious of Turkey’s motives in shooting down a Russian jet. It was a provocative and unnecessary act. My suspicion is that it is an attempt to break up any united effort to deal with ISIS as Turkey has aided ISIS all along and benefitted from the oil trade with ISIS.
