On June 17, 2015, a terrorist went into an African American church, was welcomed into its prayer group, and proceeded to kill 9 of the congregants.

All of theses terrorists were white.
See what I did there? I called acts of terror for what they are, “terror”. Which seems to be something that we as a country cannot do.
Terrorism is what happens overseas. Or, if it happens here, it comes from overseas. Terrorism has a brown hue to it. When the perpetrator is white, it’s a lone nut, a mentally disturbed man. Anything but terrorism.
Barack Obama’s first Secretary of Homeland Security was going to put out a report that the greatest threat of terrorism to the United States came from well-armed, Christian, white men. The led to the howls of the Right, saying that evil, Marxist Kenyan Obama was criminalizing God-fearing Christians. Of course, the history of the past 7 years has shown that Pres. Obama’s security service was correct.
Terrorism is the currency of the weak and disenfranchised. Yes, you read me correctly. Daesh is weak and disenfranchised, suddenly hemmed in by a global coalition headed by the US. Its attack on Paris was nothing but a lashing out at an enemy which will proceed to crush it. Now is the time to pound it into dust.
Likewise, the terrorism and planned terrorism carried out in the US by white Christian men is a crying out of a group which every day loses power and influence. A survey came out this week that white Christians now make up an absolute minority of the US population, and they are drifting right as their power evaporates.
But, the difference is that while we call what Daesh and Al Qaeda do as “terrorism”, we rarely apply the same term to the terrorism plotted and carried out by white American Christians.
GOP frontrunner Donald Trump inveighed against Pres. Obama for not calling the threat from overseas “radical Islamic terrorism”. (Ask Osama bin Laden as to Pres. Obama’s fight against just such terrorism.) Of course, Mr. Trump’s entire campaign has been based on stoking the resentments which lead to an equally pernicious terrorism, that of white Christian males. And this terrorism has a much darker hue, as it’s aimed at people who are fellow citizens, but who are deemed to be irredeemable, traitors to the Republic.
A Twitter follower asked me if the Age of Obama has been worth it, as it has fired up the insanity of the waning majority, seeing that its power and privileges are being diminished. I say “Yes”. Demography, unless a fascist system is installed, will not be denied. And it’s much better to see the insanity up front and glaring, not under the surface. But the name has to be named. It is terrorism. An attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic is terrorism; an attack on a black church is terrorism. Any irruption of white angst into violence directed against a perceived enemy is terrorism. There is no other syllogism for it. If we can’t fight radical Islamists without naming them what they are, neither can we fight radical Christians. Terrorism does not only emanate from beyond our borders; it festers within our bosom. The fight against terrorism, regardless of religion, is the fight which civilized countries face in this century. It is the fight which will determine if the 21st Century will be one of promise and progress, or a descent into darkness and violence.

I just saw on ABC video, the funeral for the 9 year old boy executed in retaliation. The hearst was some kind of pimp mobile and the color of the casket was bright red. What message is that sending? To me, the first thought I had was – “red”, the color of a gang. If that thought crossed my mind, what thought do you think the rival gang is thinking?

Excellent piece, LL. Needless to say a black TWO-TERM PRESIDENT that is so brilliant, accomplished and charismatic, with a lovely intelligent wife and two beautiful, bright daughters, intensified the alienation, rage and un-tethering of many white men. This remains especially true of older ones seeing their unearned power structure dissolving. They just can’t stand it and in the end can’t bear the inexorable end of their imagined “way of life”.

It was around that age that I became aware of civil rights movement and voting rights, so I don’t mind him being involved at this age of Civics and government, however, I do have a problem with him being mislead by his primary caregivers.
The political nonsense I am referring to is talking up the GOP talking points/lies, getting on You Tube to talk against his own best interest (I am assuming he comes from a middle-class family who took advantage of the opportunities gained by AA’s during the 60’s & 70’s) and being used/misled by his folks and the GOP. There’s one thing being aware like we all were during the civil rights movement ( I was aware of MLK, RFK, etc.) but I can’t imagine an AA kid publically going against it during that time period. His parents benefited from the civil rights movement and he is going along with his parents thinking they did fine without it, talking hate/lies about PBO, etc., when he has no idea what he’s talking about by parroting these lies. In my opinion he is doing more damage (5 million followers), I’d rather see him just be a kid and shut up until he can truly think for himself as a young adult.

No one that I know takes political advice from ministers or any self-styled religious leader (of what/whom anyway). Young people are not in churches (most in my area are aging out) and those who are decide for themselves, if they make any decisions at all regarding politics. PBO put the cabash to some of the old time preachers who were used to getting “walking around money” from various campaigns to spread the political word to the faithful. This is not the 60’s in which the church was the center for political activism.
Why meet with someone, who is a known liar, who never cared who you are or what your concerns were in the past? If they thought that they were going to be anything other than a prop in the DT show, they deserve what they get for being ignorant.

Over at Daily Beast they’re reporting that ‘the suspect’ has a history of ‘animal cruelty’ for shooting at a neighbor’s dog with a pellet gun, and was also involved in a peeping tom incident. I’m sure we’ll start hearing about his sad childhood next. How long before we get the reports of his obsession with Fox News and other right wing media? Long. Very long.
Seems to me, though, that in this search for motive, the media is dancing around a universal truth: both Christian and Muslim people can be radicalized and fanaticized. Motives for mass murder are not going to be reasonable and reliable. Tracking back to how this person became a monster leads us very rapidly past their religion, country of origin, or belief system to an inflamed rhetoric and access to weapons.
As that deadly combo is more and more readily available here in America, we see more and more tragedies.

I’ve noticed that “Search for motive” only seems to happen when the terrorist is both domestic and white or white Christian. If the perpetrator is brown and/or foreign they are a “thug” or, if Muslim, no search for motive is deemed necessary; simply being brown or being a Muslim is accepted as a motive. To the media and many people, brown = violent and Muslim = fanatical violence. There is this assumption that Christian = good and white equals innocent before proven guilty. Otherwise we would either always or never be searching for motive. We would judge people by their acts alone.

Coming in late after putting up outdoor Christmas lights, but wanted to say your essay is brilliant and necessary, LL. I feel no sympathy for threatened white male authority since that so-called authority has always been fed by racism and misogyny and led to abuse, contempt of others, violence and and the suppression of rights. It seems it has also led to an infantile ability to cope with change. Instead of acting like supposed grown adults, a large section of the white male population loses self control, sulks and acts out with dire consequences to those around them.
