As soon as Trump announced the meeting, I heard various pastors saying it was just a meeting, not meant to be an endorsement. Trump flat out lied - again - and I hope that shows them his character clearly, if they werenât aware before.
He will have photos of them at the meeting. These photos will be sent out in campaign literature as proof of their collective endorsements. Low info voters will believe the photos. The pastors can scream all the want that they werenât there to endorse but it wonât matter cuz Trump will have what he wants - which is association and tacit affinity, no matter how indirect. Pastors/bishops being played like baby fiddles.
Howâd it go yesterday? I got 3/6 classes of research papers graded; hope to finish the final 3 classes (100+) today. It will be so good to be finished. It is interesting reading, though, as it is about one of the 27 amendments in the Constitution that they researched. So far have read about the 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th, 10th, 13th, 14th, 22nd and 26th Amendments. No 5th and 6th, 7th or 8th amendments yet. Surprising.

The youngest person at my familyâs Thanksgiving dinner yesterday was my niece. She is the youngest child of my wifeâs sister, and favors her (my wife) so much that people assume theyâre mother and daughter when theyâre out together. She is also either nine or 10 years old (I forget which), which means for as long as she can remember, the President of the United States of America has been Black.
While Iâm sure she has enough wherewithal and enough of an understanding of history to know exactly how historically abnormal this is, this is all that she has experienced. Thereâs nothing revolutionary or shocking or mesmerizing to her about seeing the Black presidentâs Black daughters laugh at his corny jokes during the annual turkey pardoning. This is her normal. Me explaining to her why this is such a big deal is like, I donât know, a great-grandparent explaining the difference in taste and texture of backyard well water and sink water to me.

Equally insane is how, to them, the experience of watching little Black girls named Malia and Sasha grow up in the White House â something that has been both the most delightful and even arguably the most radical part of the Obama presidency â is equally mundane. Old hat. All a little Black girl like my niece has known is little Black girls on the White House lawn with their mom and dad. And those little Black girls growing into less little Black teens. There are undoubtedly thousands of little Black girls taking their fashion cues today from what Malia and Sasha were wearing Wednesday. And thousands of little Black boys getting teased by their parents for blushing whenever either Malia and Sasha are on screen, the same way my parents would tease me about Rudy Huxtable and Ashley Banks. And the value of this â of these revolutionary existences existing as mundanities, as literally all that little Black kids like my niece have seen and known â can not be measured.
I love this. The benefit to Black children is immeasurable. And at the same time, all the little children of every color and heritage are seeing the Black daughters and Black wife of the Black President-theyâve never seen another president or first family.
I remember when Kennedy was running, and his Catholic faith was a huge issue. A presidential candidate had to be a WASP. That chokehold on elected office is gone, and we are all so much better for it.
I saw a tweet somewhere that said something like, ‘If you think I voted for Obama because heâs Black, then why do you think Iâd never vote for Carson?â Candidates can be assessed on their merits, their ability to perform the work of their office. At least thatâs possible.
