High-poverty schools often staffed by rotating cast of substitutes

Mya Alford dreams of studying chemical engineering in college, but the high school junior is at a disadvantage: Last year, her chemistry teacher at Pittsburgh’s Westinghouse Academy quit just weeks after school started, and the class was taught by a substitute who, as Alford put it, “didn’t know chemistry.”
The year before, there was no permanent biology teacher until December. Students at Westinghouse, a high-poverty school in one of Pittsburgh’s roughest neighborhoods, often see a rotating cast of substitutes, Alford said.
“You’re looking at test scores,” Alford said of the school’s low performance on state standardized tests in math, science and reading. “But we didn’t have a stable teacher.”

SO down loaded Windows 10, took forever, lost his task bar, we couldn’t get it back, he got frustrated with other aspects, gave up and reversed it as was told could. Guess we are too old for tech progress. A good friend down loaded also, younger, didn’t bother with problems, called in IT person to teach her how to use. She works from home and felt she needed to be up to date. Good luck.

I think you gave up too early;
yes, at first it is frustrating to use but then in a few weeks you wonder why you were fussing in the first place;
Worst decision I ever made was to download Windows 10. If you are still at it in 24 hours please don’t be surprised. Lost more than the $300 it took to fix it.

Downloaded mine a few months ago;
Yes, it took a very long time to complete the task;
of course I got frustrated when I first tried to use it - because I was not familiar with the new look;
I was glad that the start button was replaced and through that I found that if I click on it, there was a tutorial (called Cortana) which provided guidance of how to access my files and use the new windows;
found all my files still saved in my folders and I could access my email right away;
but now I use it fine and don’t even think about the features that were changed;
like everything new, a person needs patience to learn the way around and the new features;
so my advice: patience is the word
So people. if you actually have a pictorial gem you want included up front in the voting (and CC is not around), you can bring it to my attention and I will pass it on. I’m already remembering last year and getting revved! :) :) :)

Four Black Women Win Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Trust has announced the latest class of 32 American students who will study at the University of Oxford as Rhodes Scholars. Being named a Rhodes Scholar is considered among the highest honors that can be won by a U.S. college studen
Of this year’s 32 American Rhodes Scholars, it appears that four are African Americans. All four are women.
Ilhan A. Dahir is a graduate of Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in English and political science. She is now teaching English in Turkey as a Fulbright Fellow. Dahir is the daughter of Somali immigrants. Dahir plans to earn two master’s degrees at Oxford, one on refugee and forced migration studies and one in global governance and diplomacy.
Jennifer C. Hebert is a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in the biological basis of behavior. She is a member of the university’s rowing team and the U.S. national rowing team. Her senior thesis involves research on the effects of nicotine exposure or stress on neural circuitry. Hebert will study for a master’s degree in psychiatry at Oxford.
Logan C. Jackson from Lexington, Kentucky, is a senior at Northeastern University in Boston, majoring in structural engineering. She has a perfect grade point average so far in her undergraduate career. Jackson is president of the Northeastern University chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. She plays the viola in the university’s symphony orchestra. At Oxford, Jackson plans to study for a master’s degree in education and a master’s degree in evidence-based social intervention and policy.
Ericka M. Wheeler is the first African American woman from the state of Mississippi to win a Rhodes Scholarship. She is a senior at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. She is majoring in history and English and also taking a pre-med curriculum. Wheeler is co-president of the Millsaps College Gospel Choir and president of the Intercultural Student Organization. Wheeler plans to study for a master’s degree in medical anthropology at Oxford.

So the Dutch pranksters at Dit Is Normaal ran an experiment. They bought a Bible, but changed the cover to say it’s the Qur’an. Then they asked people to read passages and give their thoughts.

Today was the first of two Saturdays this month that our church takes lunch…..a hot meal, and toiletries and clean white socks, and clothes to the Homeless Alliance and feeds between two and three hundred people. I started participating in this about two months after I lost my husband. These days are my favorite days of the month. I’m new, so am the beneficiary of people who have been doing this for twenty years and know how to organize. I cut desserts first today, then stood at the table giving shampoo, combs, soap, toothpaste, etc. to all who come. The blessing is mine. So many say “God bless you” and all say thank you. We have some regulars we know, and each month some new ones. The lady I worked next to just retired from the VA and recognized a couple of veterans she knew. She is quite concerned with where they are living.
As you might guess, the majority are men, about three to one. Today one woman came with five children, bless her heart, and was ecstatic to receive all the hygiene supplies for her whole family.
I wish every Republican Senator would spend just one Saturday with us, and see what the situation is in people’s lives before they cut any more funds. We feed on Saturday, because meals are not provided on the weekends, so Saturday and Sunday are hard.
The people in my church are unbelievably generous. December 19 we will give a hat, a scarf, gloves, and a heavy sweatshirt to each person who comes. People knit the scarves, and members buy the gloves, hats and shirts. I can hardly wait for that Saturday.
The Homeless Alliance is a rather large building with a good kitchen, large dining area, showers and offices. Oh yes, we also bring dog and cat food for their pets.
