This was so weird: There’s a gas station near work that I always use to watch the direction of gas prices (although we get our gas at Costco). On Friday, gas went UP 16 cents! and was still at this high number this morning. Just weird.

I just paid more yesterday for a gallon of milk and a carton of eggs than I did a gallon of gas.

Everytime it happens, I still shake my head.

Bringing over from the end of last…

“American Jewish servicemen fighting Nazi troops during World War II faced even greater dangers than their non-Jewish comrades. If they fell into enemy hands, Germany didn’t treat them as ordinary POWs with the attendant rights demanded by the Geneva Conventions. Instead, Jewish prisoners were handled the way Germans handled all Jews: they were dispatched to death or slave labor camps, with little chance of survival. The American Army even advised its Jewish troops to destroy their dog tags and other identifying documents if captured by Nazi forces.

The group of over a thousand American soldiers were captured in late 1944 and early 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge and transported to the Stalag IXA POW camp near Ziegenhain, Germany. One of their first orders was to separate out the Jewish troops and present them to their German captors.

The German camp commander, Major Siegmann, delivered the order in English to the ranking American serviceman in the camp. This was Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, a stocky 24-year-old from Knoxville Tennessee. Remembered by his fellow troops from basic training as a gentle, unassuming soldier, Sgt. Edmonds might have seemed an unlikely candidate for the heroism he was about to display.

According to his son, Rev. Chris Edmonds, who has spent years speaking with witnesses and piecing together what happened that day on January 27, 1945, instead of ordering Jewish troops front and center, Sgt. Edmonds turned to his men and said, “We are not doing that, we are all falling out.”” more> > > > >

I want to rant about Bernie. I admit to being Nickelby-centric all weekend so I’m not up on all of the facts. But on Bill Press this morning, they said that Bernie griped the Paris climate agreement wasn’t good enough and showed PBO’s “failure of leadership.”

“Failure of leadership?” You have to use Boehner’s effing favorite phrase?!

Bernie Sanders has zero grip on political reality and would be the Worst. President. Ever. (unless it’s one of the clown car loons).

Gee, Bernie, here’s “failure of leadership”: you’ve been griping for 40 years and the country has gone further and further RWNJ. Maybe YOU’RE the failure. Because what, exactly, have you accomplished except to bitch and moan? You’ve never faced an ounce of the tons of b.s. PBO faces every single day. You’ve never faced the expectations of actually getting something done. You sanctimonious jerk.

Let’s see - if you couldn’t get climate change reversed in the next 10 years, your “principles” would mean there would be no deal at all?

He has the political instincts of a 5 year old. And he is ginning up his supporters to NOT support any Democrat without his purity. You’e never worked with the system to make it a better system.

Thanks! I think he is naive (and there is no excuse at his age and experience), and therefore dangerous. He is a more powerful Ralph Nader and he can do serious damage.

            December 14, 2025 at 8:25 pm

You are so right about the naivete. He is idealistic (which is not bad in itself) but has no real sense of how things really work and how hard it is to accomplish anything at all in the current environment. I know a lot of us wish the Paris agreement had gone further but at the same time we know that we couldn’t achieve everything and that it’s a major feat that the accord was accomplished. There is something to be said for acknowledging that there is more work to be done (as there always is, nothing is perfect!) but that this is a major step forward.

            • 32 57andfemale
              December 15, 2025 at 11:12 am

The agreement is historic. It’s not perfect, but it’s a hell of a start to get most of the world onboard. That Bernie dismisses that is Nader-istic and therefore a danger to this country. I appreciate his views, as do we all. But his dismissal of PBO is childish and is proof that he is not capable of being an effective POTUS. I dislike him more and more, because the country and the world are at stake and he is stoking the childish whiny leftists who are part of the reason we got Bush as POTUS and had the disastrous 2010 and 2014 elections.

Should a horse even be eligible for SI’s Sportsperson of the Year?
    Yes
    3% (3)
    No
    82%● Percentage: 82
    82% (75)

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-serena-williams-american-pharoah-sports-illustrated-20151214-htmlstory.html

SI states that the sportsperson of the year award goes to “the athlete or team whose performance that year embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement.” That puts American Pharoah at a clear disadvantage since horses can’t really display sportsmanship.

Are we really shocked, just a few days ago a Policeman in Oklahoma was convicted of raping 13 African American woman and not a single new network carried the verdict. Where were the feminist, where was the outrage? so the fact that a fucking horse was being considered as a legitimate choice for ‘sportsman’ of the year over Serena Williams is not all that surprising.

Ok TODers, I would like some advice on Dental HMOs and whether you think they are worth signing up for.

As many of you know, I am in business for myself and happily part of Covered California for my medical insurance. This year they started offering some dental insurance plans for adults. The dental plans don’t have subsidies, so the rates are similar for other group insurance pools, I think.

I have great dental habits but quite a few crowns that all have a shelf life (as those of you with crowns probably know), so the idea of dental insurance is attractive to me. The Covered CA PPO plans’ monthly premium to waiting period/benefit ratio is not worth it for me, so I am looking at HMO plans from Delta, Access and another company.

Problem is, all three got horrible reviews on yelp - like one stars all around. Plus, when I look at provider directories, the dentists listed as participating have a lot of reviewers saying they won’t perform the services that are covered by the HMOs and that they use billing tricks or flat out refuse to do covered services (“deep cleaning” seems to be a racket of sorts).

In your experiences/opinions, are these HMO plans more trouble than they are worth or should I roll the dice and try one?

Thanks, deadline is tomorrow, so I need to decide today :-)

That’s great to hear! I have read lots of negative stuff online, so hearing that you have used it and that they were great makes me feel like maybe it would be worth it to give the HMO plan a try. The monthly/annual cost is low. I just wanted to hear from someone who actually had used the plan. Thank you so much!

      and,

Delta Dental premiums on health care exchange remain steady for 2016, contrary to national trend

      December 9, 2025

SAN FRANCISCO — Delta Dental of California and its affiliated companies announced today that their premiums for family dental plans available on multiple public health care exchanges remain roughly the same for plan year 2016 as they were for plan year 2015, in contrast to a recent report showing a rise in the cost of exchange plans.

Pediatric dental coverage is one of ten “essential health benefits” under the Affordable Care Act, while adult dental coverage is also available in most state exchanges. In most states, exchanges offer separate (stand-alone) pediatric dental policies that can be combined with qualified health plans, as well as optional adult dental coverage.

In a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, the Obama administration acknowledged what many health care experts predicted — that many consumers across the country will see premium increases for the 2016 plan year. Not so, however, for Delta Dental clients and prospective enrollees.

“When our affordable family dental plans were designed for 2016, we made a conscious effort to keep benefits and rates the same for 2016 as they were in 2015,” said Gary D. Radine, president and CEO of Delta Dental of California and its affiliates. “Cost is a major factor in deciding to purchase a health or dental plan, and we keep the consumers’ concerns top of mind.”

Delta Dental’s group of companies currently offers ACA-compliant health care marketplace dental PPO and HMO-type plans in 16 states including the District of Columbia. The company also offers consumers an online resource center as a hub of information about the Affordable Care Act and its requirements.

Please visit healthcare.gov during open enrollment to view our dental plan options in your state.

        Thanks for the info, GGail

Yes, that is nice that they didn’t increase their premiums, but I am concerned about some of the horror stories I have heard about how they often try to refuse claims or that they pre-approve a claim, only to deny it after the work is done and submitted. I have two dentist clients that have nothing but bad things to say about them - that they don’t pay enough for services and constantly try to get out of paying claims (one decided not to participate anymore). Quite a few of the dentists listed as in network have yelp reviews that accuse them of refusing to perform covered services (i.e. they will only do a “deep cleaning” or they don’t do amalgam fillings).

If I am paying for the insurance, but will end up paying as much or more due to bait and switch by either Delta or a participating dentist, then I might just try to work out a cash deal with a dentist if I need a big procedure.

This is why I wanted to know about any TODers actual experience with the company and how they are at paying/honoring claims.

We’ve had Delta Dental for years. When I went to the OU Dental school for faculty care, had to have gum bone grafts, the paid well and quickly. Delta Dental was one of two or three companies the Dental School accepted. They did not accept Blue Cross/Blue Shield. My regular dentist takes it and I get two free cleanings a year, a discount on the third I have to have because of gum issues, and paid well on a filling I just had. My plan is associated with Tricare for Life; it is the federal plan.

WATCH: Ohio gun nut oozes white privilege as he explains his ‘right’ to terrorize black neighborhood
    Travis Gettys TRAVIS GETTYS
    13 DEC 2015 AT 22:53 ET

A White gun owner and a black barbershop owner sat down to discuss their differences after an angry confrontation that was captured last week in a viral video.

Daniel Kovacevic said he was just exercising his legs and his rights by strolling around a black neighborhood with a rifle strapped to his back and a pistol holstered to his belt — but Deone Slater said the armed man made him nervous.

“He could have turned around and run loose like Rambo on the building,” said Slater, who owns Kangaroo Kutz in Akron.

Ohio allows for the open carry of firearms, and both Kovacevic and legal experts said he broke no laws because he did not point either of his weapons at Slater or verbally threaten him.

“I walk up and down the street for exercise — it just happens that I have guns with me,” Kovacevic said.

The 25-year-old Kovacevic has been stopped by police multiple times — including a recent incident near the University of Akron — after alarmed residents called authorities and posted photos of him walking around their mostly black neighborhood.
