I liked this line especially CEB: ” (He has) Shown us what hope really is: the faith in things not seen, but worked for with patience and courage. Hope is not some nebulous, airy-fairy thing; it is gritty and determined; it is surety in the face of extreme adversity and heartbreak; it is love.” Such understanding of what he has been trying to show us for seven years.

MP, thanks so much for bringing CEB’s comments over and thanks, thanks, thanks, CEB for writing those words - we can tell they came from your heart. While I agree with all of them, I especially like this one…”Laughter, a strong mind and body, and the company of loyal friends and colleagues can help us get through the difficult times. No one is meant to go through life without these things and they are always there for us if we reach out for them.”

These folks could care less about people and have no reason to not support background checks. It is all about gun sales and money for them. The more guns, the more profits.

This is the best explanation I’ve seen yet of Saudi Arabia’s aggressive actions. Interesting how the analogy to angry white males in the US popped out as I was reading this. SA is feeling threatened by a changing world and is literally “acting out” in rage at its changing status.

        January 6, 2025 at 6:30 pm

it would not be above the RW powers that be in America to encourage SA to do its best to scuttle the UN negotiations that is trying to create a political solution in Syria…Imagine that a way to stop the fight politically…that is NOT what SA wants…nor is it what the powers that be want….

        GA Judith.

Are you back in Oregon? Saw that you attended President Obama’s compelling/amazing announcement yesterday — lucky you, a witness to history!

I missed the backstory on your WH invitation — if you care to share (again, no doubt), please do!

        If it’s any consolation…

Thanks, Judith. Real Oregonians have nothing to be ashamed of. This was done by white supremacists outsiders. As you can see, the real Oregonians, the Paiute Nation, take a proud stand of the sacredness of the land and the need to protect it.

Good article in the Washington Monthly on the victories President Obama has achieved and how he sees them in terms of historical movements within a democracy. In a democracy, great change can’t occur at once, but incremental change can make all the difference over the long term.

Very good article, and the one it discusses is worth the click too. I also recommend this article from their site today: http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal-a/2016_01/trump_could_do_to_texas_what_p059180.php

The gist of the article is that Texas is being handed to the Dems by Trump.

‘ We often assume that there is something permanent in the red state/blue state divide we see in the presidential electoral map. Part of that has become standard rhetoric about the “coastal blue states.” Would it surprise you to learn that from 1952 through 1988, the state of California was “red” in 9 of the 10 presidential elections?

That is the topic of an article in the Wall Street Journal by Jason Riley. He posits that what Republican Gov. Pete Wilson did to California, Donald Trump could do to other currently red states. ‘

Thanks, Susanne. If Trump could bring us a Democratic Texas it would be proof that good could come from any evil.

Thanks Susanne for sharing this article! Nancy Le Tourneau (a.k.a. Smartypants) is doing a wonderful job at the “Washington Monthly.” I witnessed California’s transformation from a red state to a blue state. And she is absolutely right for tracing this transformation to Gov. Pete Wilson’s vicious attacks on Hispanic immigrants. What’s really ironic is that Pete Wilson was considered a Republican moderate when he was the Mayor of my beloved San Diego. But in order to win a second term as governor, he rode the wave of the anti-immigrants in California. The poor Republicans didn’t realize the demographic changes taking place in the state.

Thank you so much JackieG, for sharing this article! It’s a must read for any one interested in understanding the political genius of President Obama who has been able to achieve great success despite the hostility of his opponents and the sheer complexity of the American political structure. As always, Nancy Le Tourneau, (a.k.a. Smartypants) is absolutely brilliant in capturing the true essence of President Obama.
