Thanks for the refreshing post. I love the quote, “We do not have to accept this carnage…” Yet, I am in a panic mode right now. I can’t comprehend the Bernie Sanders juggernaut. I will vote for any Democrat, but I want a Democrat that will win.

I find that I’m getting anxious already….like I want to crawl out of my skin, just thinking that this is the last SOTU for this amazing and historic Presidency….and this man….It will be bittersweet, to be sure. I know that I’ll cry and that my heart will swell with pride at the same time….kids, we need to make sure that all that was done by him, by us, is not all for naught. We need to win this November in a GIGANTIC WAY. I mean so there is no damn doubt that we mean business and we want to keep moving this country forward! I will not let this man down. I just can’t.
I so agree DF. We are staying home not going to any watch parties. I just want to cry yell whatever without worry. I would rather be at home and with the TOD community.
We do need to win dramatically this fall. We can’t let this country be taken over by the haters.
Of course, with this current POTUS in mind.
Laws passed, especially involving Ca$h spent are usually passed for the Future. Retroactive is not common. If they passed any law denying current President the usual operating funds, SCOTUS will strike it down. WJC had POTUS salary raised from $250K or so to $400K. It didn’t take effect until GW Bush was installed. It also included a 10yrs Secret Service detail coverage. The SService detail coverage was removed because of the 9/11 attacks. The Operation Funds were talked about after WJC’s term. NYC Cost and Partisanship drove those conversations. WJC decided on a cheaper real estate in Harlem, instead of Manhattan.
President Obama will be known as the trillion dollar man so I have no doubt he will not need it.

Responding hours after your post, but in this case, the measure seems fair and not directed with animus against the 44th President:
“Under the legislation, ex-presidents who earn more than $600,000 a year would not receive federal funds for office expenses or travel. Presidential pensions would not be affected by the amount of income earned. The bill would not affect Secret Service protection for ex-presidents or their families.”
This won’t apply to President Obama because he has a separate Foundation to cover the costs associated with his Library and other endeavors.
If he decides to accept (exorbitant) speaking fees ala GWB and WJC, he can reliably make up for any needs above $600K/year.
PBO is nothing if not a longterm thinker, and he and his aides will ensure that his Library will continue to thrive and inspire generations to come.

Glad you were able to be a part of this important event with our President, and meet with the families affected by gun violence. I’m sure their gratitude to you is bottomless.

Here’s a thought…… how about we stop demonizing/belittling/and badmouthing any Dem you’re currently not considering voting for?
Is it possible to NOT be like the toddlers in the GOP and NOT fight amongst ourselves? How about we stop talking down ANY Dem candidates, unless they’re certifiably insane? And right now, I don’t know of any. The three Dems that are running for POTUS, would actually make a GREAT ticket, even if you boxed them like a trifecta at Churchill Downs.
I’m a DEM. I’m going to VOTE DEM even if our nominee is a Rhesus Monkey, because it will be better, and safer for the entire planet than anything the GOP has to offer.
Bernie, Hillary, and Martin, are ALL more HUMAN and POTUS material than ANYONE in the Klown Kar™. You’re free to have your favorite, and you’re free to disagree with any of their points. Just please take what Thumper’s Mom said to heart, “If you can’t say somethin’ nice, (big breath/ankle circle) don’t say nuthin’ at all.”
I disagree with all three of our candidates about things. Things I will keep to myself, because this year, I not only want as many people to be excited about going to the polls as possible, I want them to still feel that way if their peep ends up not on the ballot.
EVERYONE NEEDS TO STILL BE EXCITED ABOUT PUTTING A DEM IN THE WHITE HOUSE and EVERY OFFICE POSSIBLE.
We cannot allow a situation where the losers feel so depressed, they withdraw into silence and end up staying home, because a bunch of people made them feel it’s all pointless, or they were talked into hating the other Dems who are running.
I refuse to poison the pool and make our side stay home - AGAIN - because that is how we lose, and I’m sick to death of it. We tend to fall in love with a certain candidate, then when they don’t win the nom, and the OTHER candidate does, there’s suddenly Firedoglake and all those Hillary spoilsports who railed against Obama, and talked everyone into staying home in 2010 because they didn’t get their sparkle pony who farted progressive glitter, and they wanted to “show” Obama? The Dems? The wanker BlueDogs that fucked us on the ACA? It doesn’t matter - people DID stay home, and we got FUCKED.
Voting your “conscience” is for children who are too young to vote, and can have the luxury to dream their ideals. Adults in a country that doesn’t have Instant Run-Off Elections cannot afford that luxury. The damage done in 2010 allowed the GOP to redraw districts that may never see another elected Progressive, ever.
The parties are NOT the same, not even close. One side wants healthcare for everyone, the other wants healthcare for those who can afford it in a profit-driven marketplace. One side wants equality for all, and the other wants to go back to appointing state senators, and not allowing the public to vote for them. One side wants to make Christianity the National religion, while the other wants complete separation of church & state. one side wants everyone to have a gun, and the other side wants gun control. One side has stated publicly that Climate Change is a hoax, the rest of the world knows it’s a fact, and probably too late to save ourselves.
This isn’t a game. If you don’t want a Theocratic Facist Oligarchy, Don’t badmouth ANY Dem. Don’t stay home if your peep doesn’t get the nom, and FOR THE SAKE OF THE UNIVERSE AND ALL LIFE IN IT, DO NOT ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO STAY HOME EITHER. In the national election vote for your SURVIVAL. And if your entire focus is on the office of POTUS, and not ALL OFFICES, you’re doing it wrong.
Do NOT allow yourself or anyone you know, to become demoralized and begin hating on ANY of our candidates. That causes people to throw in the towel and not bother. If people stay home, we could get Trump, or any of them, and if that happens, you can kiss your right to vote goodbye, because they all think we’re too stupid to vote anyway. They want to start by going back to the Government selecting State Senators. They’ve been starving Public Education for over 3 decades and sadly, they’ve gotten their dumbed down citizenry, who will come out in droves to vote in The Krazy™.
It won’t matter who wins our nomination if we get a complete GOP Congress, they’re going to get less done than President Obama.
I know what you’re saying Tally, but there’s no comparison between discussions here on the Dem candidates and the nutjobbery of the right about theirs. None. And I strongly suspect that most people here will vote for whoever gets the Dem nomination, even if they don’t like them very much, because they’re fully aware of the cataclysmic alternative.
That said, I feel no loyalty to Sanders - (1) because the shithole wanted PBO primaried and (2) because he’s not even a Dem.
But if something bizarre was to happen and he was to win the nomination - yeah, he’d be better than the alternative. He’s still a shithole, though.

I know we all understand the urgency of electing a Democrat. This is primary season and it’s our duty to examine all candidates while we have the opportunity.
While the disappointment over the current crop of dem candies (which includes an indie) after the excitement and a very good tenure of a great president is understandable, folks have to realize there will not be another Obama. He is a once-in-a-blue-moon phenomenon that is not going to happen again in this lifetime for all of us. This 2016 election is unique in the sense that have ya taken a look at all fascists from the other side, jeebers? So, I would even go as far as to say it should be a clinton-sanders ticket just to keep the lazy ass dem base energized for the down tickets also ‘cos the wingers are going to turn our in yuuuge nos. in 2016 ‘cos the kenyan.
Having said that, this site has definitely has never been a fdl or dkos.
I somewhat disagree that we will never see a candidate like Barack Obama. At one time in my life and just like the young AA video posted earlier today, AA’s never thought we’d live to see an AA President in our great-great-great grandchildrens lifetimes. I think the seeds of change have been planted by PBO and maybe someone from his daughters generation will come up the ranks to be the first AA woman president or Asian president. Times have changed so rapidly that anything can happen I just pray we don’t go backwards.
It has taken 43 presidencies to get to a PBO. I too hope it doesn’t that many to get the next one. I have been following politics since my teens.And I have seen none, repeat none, who comes even close to the kenyan. The cleanest and most graceful pol in my lifetime.

There will be young candidates and candidates of many shapes and colors but I have to agree with amk - I will never see another like PBO in my lifetime - the GOP and the media tried and failed to find ANY negatives that would stick - all they found was an intelligent, educated family man who understands how families work, how an economy works and how the world works.
He cares for the poorest of his countrymen & talks with the richest. As my father used to say - He is a man of kings and paupers - I cannot believe there is only a year left - I cannot believe that people voted for those who would rob him of the ability to do good for the US and the world.
I love what Judith had to say - it must be shouted from the rooftops and proclaimed by the callers - this is and was Camelot and I will not see it again.

We need a big big turnout in voters in this election so that the historic accomplishments of President Obama are not swept aside, along with SS. Medicare, Medicaid, the EPA, public lands and all the other wonderful things that Dems have accomplished for our country.
