There’s a response in there asking @TeaPartyCat if THEY know how government works. It’s clear from the question that the questioner doesn’t know. There’s a lot of ignorance out there, and way too many people willing to cling to theirs.

President Obama was not kidding around when he said he was going to go across the country to talk about the economic, political, fear issues that undermine our ability to work together. Looks as if he’s not going to let one day go by and will go living room to living room if that’s what it takes. One thing he WILL not do is accept a status quo of rancor and cynicism. And you can bet we’re all going to be enlisted in his army.

The wingnuts were just getting the outrage-o-matic up to speed when the sailors’ release was announced. They’d barely started calling it the New Iranian Hostage Crisis™ and bam! it’s over.

Meanwhile, instead of getting to gloat over how Nikki Haley stuck it to President Ni-clang, they has a sad over her terrible remarks about having to be nice to legal, hardworking immigrants.

It’s a dark day to be a wingnut.

AMK, I’ve come to the conclusion that Republican politicians put filters in their ears so that truth can’t ever reach them. They must also have some kind of distortion mechanism to twist everything they hear. Maybe that’s why they live in an alternate version of reality. They hear no truth; see no truth; speak no truth.

Hay media and Republicans do you know why there was a peaceful and quick response in releasing the ten American soldiers? Because of this President agenda in talking to people. Imagine if Iran and America hadn’t sat down for months or years in working out that nuclear deal. If we had listen to the Republicans we would have bomb Iran by now and do you think they would have release those soldiers?

Republicans are masters of manipulation. It’s how they continually get poor, rural Whites to vote for them election after election. It’s how 9 out of 10 of the poorest states are Republican. It’s how 97 of the poorest 100 counties are in red states. It’s how Owsley County, Kentucky which has the highest percentage of residents on food stamps, is 99% white and is 95% Republican. It’s how Kentucky can elect a Republican governor who actively campaigned to take away health insurance from 400,000 of the state’s residents. And it’s why 16 Republican state governors have chosen not to expand Medicaid, despite the initial cost being offset by the Obama Administration.

    • 90 desertflower
      January 13, 2025 at 9:46 am

I believe that it’s fear, plus shaming. Those poor, rural white voters don’t want to see themselves as needing help…or the people that Republicans talk about when they are going off the rails on everyday Americans that have fallen on hard times…they are prideful and can’t allow themselves to think for a second that THEY are the ones that Republicans are railing against….they WANT TO BELIEVE that Republicans aren’t referring to them, that the Republican tough talk is aimed at “those others” but not them…Republicans talk a game about “personal responsibility” so these poor, white folks just talk themselves into a fantasy land where they aren’t the ones being ridiculed. So sad/

When President Obama announced a new initiative to find a cure for cancer and put VP Biden in charge, I couldn’t believe how much genius there was in that announcement. After a list of breathtaking achievements over seven years, he seemed to be saying,”well this list isn’t complete until we cure cancer”-the ultimate medical goal. Just making that push and putting resources behind was a incredible gift to every American who lives in dread of this disease. But to give the leadership to Joe Biden was beyond inspired. He knows how much Biden’s heart will be involved in this effort; he’s giving his BP something monumental to do, but also a way of managing his grief. And he-PBO-was telling us that there’s no problem we can’t tackle in this country because we have the kind of spirit that thinks big and achieves big, unlike the sniveling, fear filled, cowardly little creatures the GOP would like us to believe we are (so we will crave a big bad Daddy.

In the last few weeks, PBO has changed the conversation about guns in America and made it okay for all us, including formerly scared politicians, to talk about the subject. So I’m going to predict that last night’s SOTU will be the beginning of a new conversation about the way that Americans see themselves and our country. And that will slowly, but surely, begin the zeitgeist shift from from fear to hope. Any Democrat running for public office in 2016 had better heed the way to victory our President just handed you.

He has been demonstrating for the last seven years what a “respect, empower, include” perspective looks and what the results are. Whether internationally or domestically these were the subtext of everything he said to us last night. I think self respect, feeling empowered as a citizen, and reaching out to work together on problems, relating and collaborating are the tools we need to accomplish the simplest but most important of goals that the President described each person as having.

What the President didn’t articulate was the poison that a power over mentality has on our families, our communities and our world. When people have been terribly disempowered by those that should have cared for them and helped them reach out for their potential, they will try to attain illegitimate power over others as a reaction to their pain. Also when people are violated as youth and develop a deep anger toward those they cannot safely reject or express that anger towards (like their family) they will lash out at any target put before them. Trouble is that anger cannot be assuaged by scapegoats. It must be confronted and at least grieved in terms of the original perpetrators. This all goes way beyond tribalism. Its emotional health we are talking about. I once read that you could understand this by comparing Stalin and Gorbechov. Both raised in parallel environments but with loving versus abusive families.

Also people with a healthy mutual mindset are in a crazy way sensed as an existential threat to people with a power over mindset. This I think is why whether Left or Right we have our problems with these folks. Bernie or Cruz both seem to feel you are either up or down when it comes to power, never on a mutual footing with others.

    ——-

Planning for a cross-country march to “restore America” — which is related to the Oregon nature preserve standoff — appears to have hit a snag when one of its organizers shot the other co-founder Monday afternoon during a drunken argument over a gun …social media posts by right-wing “patriots” associated with militants occupying an Oregon nature preserve identified the victim and shooter as the organizers of the Paul Revere 2016 Final March To Restore America.

“NEVER mix guns & booze,” said the militia member, who calls himself Joe Bleaugh. “Charles got drunk and belligerent and took away his friend’s sidearm and threatened him with it; at which time his friend drew his backup weapon and fired to defend his own life. This is why it is a ‪#‎felony‬ for an intoxicated person to be in possession of a firearm. Guns and booze do not mix. End of story, and unfortunately the end of Charles’ life. What a waste, & by his own hand!”

Carter and Smith had been organizing the march, which they hoped would remove President Barack Obama and congressional leaders from office ahead of November’s elections.

I guess the ‘poor blacks’ feel the same way about FLOTUS as the ‘poor whites’ who voted for St. Ronnie felt about Nancy Reagan and her expensive designer dresses. What a dumb ass woman to think that black women who are not rich would be upset that the first AA First Lady shouldn’t own or be seen in an expensive dress.

If anything, poor blacks are proud to have people of the caliber of PBO and MO as representatives and inspiration. January 13, 2025 at 10:20 am

I have always felt that FLOTUS has an amazing sense of proportion about how she dressed, and I don’t mean just from a sense of style, which she obviously has. She used her situation to promote aspiring designers. She combined frugality with imagination and flair in a way all of us can emulate. Its about making the most of things without the obnoxious greed or stingy self denial. She has been “just right” and made us all feel we can make the most of what we have, how we look, and how we feel about ourselves. God bless her.
