Tsai Ing-wen elected Taiwan’s first female president.

Tsai Ing-wen has been elected Taiwan’s first female president.

Ms Tsai, 59, leads the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that wants independence from China.

In her victory speech, she vowed to preserve the status quo in relations with China, adding Beijing must respect Taiwan’s democracy and both sides must ensure there are no provocations.

China sees the island as a breakaway province - which it has threatened to take back by force if necessary.

In her speech, Ms Tsai hailed a “new era” in Taiwan and pledged to co-operate with other political parties on major issues.

The will of the Taiwanese people would be the basis for relations with China’s Ms Tsai said, urging both sides to show “dignity and reciprocity” in their relations.

She thanked the US and Japan for their support and vowed Taiwan would contribute to peace and stability in the region.

Morning. In the craziness that this election season has become, in the loony anger people feel in the midst of a prosperous economy, in the paranoia that seems to grip so many Americans, President Obama’s message of hope and optimism is positively radical. When we see governors enabling the poisoning of the water supply, massive voter suppression, blatant racial bias in our justice system and an insane devotion to firearms, it’s hard to see a bright future in the midst of hell. The most glorious quality of our President is that he does see see that future and he feels deep confidence in the basic decency of the American people. When the news seems nothing but bleak, just thinking of our President is an antidote to despair.

the last pox news thugs brawl attracted only 45% of the audience of the first debate. methinks many are, after the initial novelty of the poo flinging from these monkeys, are being slowly turned off by these goons.

        January 16, 2025 at 8:23 am

AMK, I hope and pray that you’re right. Now people have to understand that there’s an alternative to the goons and not just shrug and give up.

        January 16, 2025 at 8:31 am

I think so too…I think that since they have scheduled 99 GOP poo flinging sessions, that more and more people will be turned off by the entire thing. If they do tune in, it will be to see how bad the poo flinging is that particular night. They are worse than juvenile and the people that think they would make fine leaders, are not enough to win an election. Let them all talk and blabber on….maybe we all just need to see the pack of incompetent stupid these idiots have become. This is what happens when you have no morals and core convictions….they are now only circus animals. It shows.

“If they do tune in, it will be to see how bad the poo flinging is that particular night.” But even the “entertainment” value of watching the klown show starts to wear thin and become a turn-off. Those who are serious want to get past the “okay you got my attention” to the “tell me the specifics of how you’re going to make my life better.”

When PBO was motivating us with his words of hope and change, and telling us that WE are the change we believe in, I think many of us did not listen to the part about HOW hope and change would occur…not just through PBO’s work but through our work as well. That’s like a doctor telling you that you will get well, but you must follow this prescription…and we hear the “I will get well,” but fail to take the medicine.

I think about the YouTube interview when Destin asked the President to describe the characteristics of a new element called “Obamium”. One of the first things the President said was STABLE. That is something he has been throughout his presidency, despite all the intentional obstruction. He said he would want it to BE A CATALYST, but one that didn’t get too hot or too cold. To me, he is talking about the extremism that is being so disruptive to our progress. President Obama has been the catalyst for change; one that speaks to the rational and sane among us. He wants “Obamium” to be USEFUL and not just a shiny object. This speaks to not just his years as President, but reflects on his pre-POTUS years and envisions his post-POTUS years.

The reason he has been able to maneuver around the bitterness, the deceitfulness, and the obstruction that has become poltics and government, is because of 1) his focus on what he is there to do, 2) his commitment to the people he is working for, 3) his awareness of the environment that he is working in (i.e., politicians, corporations, MSM, etc.), and 4) his self-awareness — especially of his strengths and being able to utilize these strengths to get the job done.

    • 90 jackiegrumbacher
      January 16, 2025 at 9:43 am

Perfectly stated,SW. Acting as a catalyst is the only intelligent choice PBO had and because he is brilliant as well as a political genius, he knew that. Setting the direction, getting big things started, changing the conversation, encouraging voters to act is the only way that long term change comes about. His SOTU speech and his speeches since then have all been about transferring control of the wheel to us! We should have been there all along, but too many Americans got lazy or intimidated. So he’s going to spend the next year getting us ready and then he’s going to keep coaching us through his post presidential years, so that it is finally We the People who have control of this democracy and not the fat cats.

What a wonderful explication of President Obama’s answer to the YouTube questioner. That event was a great platform for PBO to show his range of knowledge and compassion for people.
