Ari Berman’s tweets about linking remembrance of MLK with protecting voter rights are actually brilliant. Dr. King would have been horrified at the concerted voter suppression going on around the country and he would have wanted all of us to fight back. We should be pushing back every day, but this special time in January is an opportunity to renew our commitment to making sure every American citizen has the right to vote with unfettered access to the polls. And that includes those who have served their time in prison and earned the restitution of their rights.

Ha! And this was the film that was supposed to destroy Hillary. The ones that went to see it weren’t going to vote for her anyway, so I’m not sure it would ever have accomplished its “purpose.”

I love this, Nena. It’s stunning and the look in their eyes is so perfect-MLK, reflective; PBO determined, almost like a spiritual father and son. Two great, seminal leaders from different eras joined together in the fight for justice.

As PBO says…Change has never been quick. It has never been simple without controversy. Change depends on persistence. Change requires determination.

The white political left has always dissed the notion of the centrality of racism…to struggle for Peace in Justice…Racism does not just effect black people…it affects white people as well…it is what keeps the GOP and who they serve in Power…it allows some one like Trump to exist…. this is why Bernie thought that he could win over Trump’s white voters…or for the DNC to think that they could woo white votes…

What about the issues of voting rights…even if the DNC only saw the issue of voter suppression as an issue of self preservation…they have not addressed it all…neither have the DEM Candidates

The elephant in the room…Racism…when will white folks be able to see it…maybe never…perhaps we will go around in this circle forever…

The DSM Register now has a countdown to the Iowa Caucuses - http://www.desmoinesregister.com/ - in case you can’t map out two weeks on your own. :-) We are joking that it might be more interesting to temporarily re-register as (gag) Republicans and go to the GOP caucus. Just heard on our local news that the GOP caucus voting is done differently than the Democrats’ caucus voting. The whole thing is bizarre, but we go anyhow. :-)

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if Ted Cruz beats out The Donald here in Iowa - the religious right in Iowa would not be much amused by Trump. And I’ve heard that Bernie’s support may be in “islands” around Iowa college towns, which would not translate to an overall win for the entire state. The Democratic caucus process is just so weird - it takes 3-4 hours of sitting in a formal meeting and taking repeated votes. I *wish* we had a primary here instead. Oh, and that we were no longer First In The Nation. :-)

Funny this - we had thousands of Greek and Italian migrants come here post WWII. Many of the older generation NEVER learned to speak English. I was at school with so many children who were the interpreters for their parents. I knew the parents via smiles and 2 words - hello & goodbye. None were extradited.

It’s OK for a private university to demand a student attend a political rally or be fined. Maybe that is what Unions should do, demand that people who don’t sign up be fined a fee for political reasons.

If the University calls for a mandatory Convocation all students must attend or be fined. I have no doubt that this was the case today. Also, they opened it up to the public. Lynchburg, VA is prime right wing territory.

Liberty University was founded by Jerry Falwell in 1971, in Lynchburg, Virginia. And Jerry Falwell was a segregationist who badmouthed Martin Luther King, Jr, James Farmer, and Desmond Tutu, and encouraged his followers to invest in the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

So, really, Liberty University is a wholly inappropriate place to go to celebrate Martin Luther King Day.

But that’s exactly what Donald Trump did.

The invitation on this day, to Trump, was purposeful.

Liberty “University” is a religious school At religious colleges, chapel attendance is required. I figure, this was a chapel service, given the time of day, and attendance was required. Trump is unbelievably ignorant. This was the same reason Cruz got a big audience at his announcement at Liberty. Not the least bit impressed.

I am wondering if the polls saying Bernie would beat the GOP by a larger margin than Hillary are as bogus as we have seen polls to be in the past. Maybe used to influence people to elect Bernie knowing the GOP had a better chance to beat him.
