Today’s Iowa Caucus history note: in 1976, the winner on the Democratic side was: Uncommitted with 37.2%! The second place finisher, Jimmy Carter with 27.6%, went on to fare better in the later primaries.

If you’re thinking it’s a pretty strange system we’ve got here in Iowa, you would be correct! And only 13 days, 08 hours and 58 minutes until the 2016 Iowa Caucuses finally start. :-)

      GM/GA TODville.

Last month I saw a tweet that linked to a behind-paywall @WSJ article that said (something to the effect of) Frank Luntz GOP focus group motivated by revenge — I Googled a link to a site that provides copies behind-paywall articles, but the article never said (and apparently Luntz didn’t probe for) what GOP voters are seeking revenge against.

Of course we know (“Obummer”) but white MSM are too cowardly to call a spade a spade.

I’m just awestruck at how people can do these ultra-realistic paintings. Halfway through the video, I though “hey, it looks great, all done.” I could see that painting selling as is just fine. But then they keep going, adding more detail and contouring. [How they see the different colors and shadows to do that is beyond amazing to me.] Next thing you know, “Voila!” It looks practically like a photograph. Incredible!

Anyone else having trouble playing Facebook vids on an iPad? I’m not on Facebook and don’t plan to be. Not sure if that has anything to do with the problem. Can’t seem to ever get these to play. YouTubes and other video content plays perfectly fine. I’ll double check if they play on my Macbook, but I’m pretty sure it’s just on the iPad.

    from the article:

But if the federal government alone administers a single-payer system, it needs to finance it all on its own, and this is where Bernie’s gamble is both a regressive flat tax disaster and woefully inadequate. Let’s dive in.

      This is a must-read.

I have been self-employed for 35 years. The loss of deduction of health care costs is a major concern. I am not one to ever defend employers ( you should have seen the sociopathic contortions my boss went through to avoid giving anything to anyone in ACA, although it did not apply to me because I’m a private contractor), but the loss of tax deduction is a serious burden.

Ezra Klein said in his critique of the plan that there is a point where the burdens to business can affect the workers and the economy, and this plan goes over that line.

Something that occurred to me: other countries have struggled mightily over universal health care, looking for many different approaches to balance the health of their citizens and economic issues. A hybrid system appears to be the most workable, and probably the most flexible. Bernie’s plan, even with its good intentions to provide universal health care, sacrifices pragmatic approaches for ideological purity.

I’m still looking at all of it. Bottom line: PBO & Dems were accused of forcing “socialized medicine” on Americans when it wasn’t even remotely true. They are going to accept actual socialized medicine, a one-size-fits all? Never gonna happen.

One of the great results of ACA was that it freed individuals to pursue self-employment and start-up businesses. Trust me, a health care deduction is immensely important to staying afloat. Bernie’s plan eliminates that, and replaces it with effectively an 8.2% flat tax increase (including employer and employee). The self-employed are on the hook for the full 8.2%.

I’m beginning to have my doubts, too, pf. He is astonishingly rigid and the campaign reflects a nastiness that has to be rooted in the candidate. He is notorious for being as grouchy as he seems and very dismissive and mean to actual people. Explain to me how, after bitching ad nauseum about ACA, that he doesn’t have a competent staff and a plan that doesn’t have these holes in it?

Seems like pure arrogance on the part of BS to not take what’s WORKING WELL right now with the Obamacare and build on it — find a way to make all the states accept the Medicaid expansion, have a viable public option, etc. It’s been through the courts, and challenged by Congress, and Obamacare has survived (so far). How arrogant to risk losing it all.

Especially since he removed duly elected people to put these ’emergency managers’ in to “save money” instead of raising taxes to pay for these short falls in the budget. Now they want ALL of America to pay for his B.S. mistakes. He should be impeached and imprisoned. The whole state needs to remove all the GOP and get rid of the power a single Governor can have to remove mayors and other people with NO oversight.

Seems there are only 2 solutions for Flint - rebuild the water supply from the ground up
      Rehouse everyone elsewhere

Both will cost billions. No doubt the Governor has a third option - watch the town die out.

As the debate over tighter controls on firearms purchases rages in Washington, Las Vegas is gearing up for the biggest gun show of the year.

Regardless of where you stand on them, guns are big business in America. The firearms and ammunition industries took in a combined $6.6 billion in 2014, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry and host of the show.
