Does it ever get too cold for your ‘amble’ with Danny? I like that word and can’t think of a time I’ve ever used it in conversation. I guess I would stroll, saunter, maybe even ramble, but never amble. It must be fun.

        • January 19, 2025 at 8:09 am

Ha, I’m definitely an ambler, Jackie - Danny not so much, more of a rocket man!

I used to think there would be some weather conditions that would provide me with an excuse on lazy days not to take him out ….. but then discovered that he really has to be taken out no matter the weather. I’m one of those freaks who loves the cold, it’s steamy humid summer days that would send me in to hiding!

Ah, so that’s why you would make it cold all the time if you ruled the world. Dog walkers around here don’t seem to be made of such stern stuff. They dress their dogs in coats and even booties, muffle themselves up to the ears and grimly walk as short a distance as possible. It’s a kind of comical parade that I can see outside my window. On really hot days they seem to fuss over their dogs’ paws getting too hot and will sometimes “carry” the dogs on their walks. If I had Pete’s Souza’s talent, I could make quite an album of dog owner quirks.

            • January 19, 2025 at 8:23 am

Jackie, when I rule the world people who dress their dogs in coats and even booties will be incarcerated for life. Unless they can show my court that it was so cold the dogs needed the clothing, in which case they’ll be released after 20-ish years.

I’m weeping over the thoughts of people carrying their dogs on their walks

You need to get snapping, now!

Pearl has to wear a sweater, although she’s pretty hardy. She is, unfortunately, bald in many places due to her terrible first 7 years of life, and she is so small - 8 pounds. Her paws and legs are so tiny.

She’ll adjust to winter pretty quickly, but if the temperature is in the teens or below, she has to wear her sweater. She’s better if it’s dry outside but she loathes cold water. She’s in and out quickly. After living her life under God knows what kind of horrible conditions, she’s ready to come inside after she’s done.

No walks in the winter for any of them. In the spring, summer and fall, they love their walks.

Me too. :-(. My Sister is in Phoenix and I talked to her yesterday. Her neighbor in Duluth told her the power had gone out for 2 hours a week ago last Saturday and didn’t look like any thing was coming out of the stacks. So she sent her son up there to check it out. I haven’t talked to her yet today to find out what damage was done and if her pipes actually froze. But she never leaves a key with a neighbor or friend so it is a problem for her. Probably could have been checked out earlier if she had, And then Keith, didn’t have a key for her storm door and had to call a lock smith to get it open. -15 below yesterday and that wasn’t even the wind chill. I hope she will have better news today. praying for her. Not a good situation.

We stay indoors. At least the smart ones. I live in the southern part of the state and we have had -18 WC -30 below last couple of days. It’s been really cold up here. We survive. I am not as hardy as I used to be so, me & my car stay home. Had to buy a heater just to keep my apartment warm. :-)

Reporters spoke to thousands of Academy members and their representatives to confirm the identities of more than 5,100 voters - more than 89% of the voting members.

    They found that:

Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male. Black members make up about 2% of the Academy, and Latino members less than 2%.
Oscar voters have a median age of 62. People younger than 50 constitute just 14% of the membership.
Some of the Academy’s 15 branches are almost exclusively white and male. Caucasians currently make up 90% or more of every Academy branch except actors, whose membership is 88% white.
Men make up more than 90% of five branches, including cinematography and visual effects.

Hi, AMK. Looks as if the ‘Academy’ may very soon suffer from obsolescence. The world is passing them by and they and all their ‘awards’ are going to seem like quaint relics of the past.

    • 28 prettyfoot58
      January 19, 2025 at 9:18 am

      Interesting article….re: the Academy Awards…nothing new …

      http://www.salon.com/2016/01/18/the_unbearable_whiteness_of_hollywood_the_academy_should_be_ashamed_but_the_problem_is_bigger_than_the_oscars/

The Oscars deserve lots of blame for this situation, but the problems go deeper than one awards show…

The film industry itself is unbelievably white—and unbelievably male. This is a very long-term trend—a 2015 UCLA study showed that 73.4 percent of all the characters in the top 100 movies of 2014 were white—and it’s not just black people getting stiffed. That UCLA study found that just under 5 percent of characters were Latino, despite the fact that Latinos have become possibly the most loyal movie going audience in the country. Academy voters should be ashamed for choosing an all-white field, but they should be equally ashamed to be part of an industry that so unerringly refuses to change.

REPUBLICANS AND MISREMEMBERING RONALD REAGAN ON IRAN (Highly Recommended)

GOP candidates ignore Reagan’s scandalous history on Iran

E.J. JackieG, as far as I am concerned, the corporate media should share the blame for the Republicans “misremembering.” Republicans are able to get away with “misremembering” because the media never challenges them.

Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking.

Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out.

And he says that further progress in science and technology will create “new ways things can go wrong”.

Prof Hawking is giving this year’s BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions.

He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive.

“Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years.

“By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.

Sad to think that humans will find a way to eventually destroy any home they colonize. Wait long enough and humans will “do in” the universe. Gives new meaning to the title, “From Here to Eternity.”

Exclusive: Pentagon May Demote David Petraeus

The Pentagon is considering retroactively demoting retired Gen. David Petraeus after he admitted to giving classified information to his biographer and mistress while he was still in uniform, three people with knowledge of the matter told The Daily Beast.

The decision now rests with Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who is said to be willing to consider overruling an earlier recommendation by the Army that Petraeus not have his rank reduced. Such a demotion could cost the storied general hundreds of thousands of dollars—and deal an additional blow to his once-pristine reputation.

“The secretary is considering going in a different direction” from the Army, a defense official told The Daily Beast, because he wants to be consistent in his treatment of senior officers who engage in misconduct and to send a message that even men of Petraeus’s fame and esteemed reputation are not immune to punishment.

        THISSSSSSSSSSS….

but the truth is the best way to move forward…is to recognize the horror.,..own up to it … offer reparations..there are so many reasons for reparations…..here is another….teach it so as not to repeat these things..

when the president speaks of striving toward a more perfect union to make our country reflect the words of our constitution…i try not to give a cynical laugh at those words in the constitution…words written by white wealthy men who owned slaves…that even with SCOTUS decisions…and additional amendments….it still it is not enough….

it can be rob ones’s soul…

this longgggggggg struggle towards justice….seems never ending…because even when there a victory for Justice…it must be defended because those forces who are against us Never give up…Never see it as a done deal…aka Voting Rights Act…judges who still won’t recognize marriage equality…votes top repeal Obamacare….the list goes on and on….

when i feel low…i think of Dr King…i think of the President…i think of the young people around the Black Lives Movement….

and i see that the struggles continues….

Sorry…got ahead of myself:) From the piece..

The Supreme Court will hear a major immigration case this term challenging President Obama’s executive actions to protect millions of undocumented immigrants from being deported.

The justices announcement Tuesday provides the Obama administration’s greatest shot at getting the 2014 executive measures on track before the president leaves office and potentially set the baseline of expectations should Congress ever again take up comprehensive immigration reform.

Many observers expected the court to take up the case purely for how it stands to impact so many people, both directly and indirectly.

On paper, the executive measures would shield nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants from any threat of deportation. The programs, known as DACA expanded and DAPA, allow undocumented immigrants to apply for temporary legal status in the U.S. that is renewable after three years.

In reality, and from a human stand-point, the actions open up access to the everyday normalcies of American life that undocumented immigrants have been largely shut out from, even though many have lived in the states for years. It would mean that full communities could suddenly work aboveboard, pay taxes, open bank accounts for the first time and learn how to drive.

Most importantly, the executive measures formally dictate that as many five out of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. cannot be deported. Immigrants who do not qualify for DACA or DAPA, especially for those with criminal records, would rise to the top as the administration’s priority to remove from the U.S.
