Essentially, Cruz’s coverage lapsed because his 2015 carrier, BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, ended its individual PPO plans for 2016, including the family plan that covered the Cruz family. The carrier decided to move entirely to HMO plans for the individual market. And Cruz didn’t manage to sign up for a new 2016 plan by Dec. 31. That happened even though the insurer announced its decision to close PPO plans way back on July 23. Five months is normally enough for an educated adult to arrange health insurance.

Cruz still has until Jan. 31 to sign up for coverage beginning March 1, and he said he’d be doing that. “We’re in the process of finding another policy,” he said. “I hope by the end of the month we’ll have a policy for our family.”

In other words, Cruz’s problem has nothing to do with Obamacare and everything to do with his own sloth — unless the explanation is more sinister, as insurance expert Richard Mayhew of balloon-juice.com speculates: “The Cruz family is currently uninsured to guarantee their father a cheap laugh line.”

You’d think his ex-Goldman Sachs employee wife would have wanted herself and their kids to be covered. This is on her, too!

It’s on both of them because there are young children involved. How anyone could risk having their children uninsured is beyond my understanding. I don’t care how busy you are or how many excuses you offer, this is irresponsible behavior.

The truth is (ostensibly anyway), JackieG, the Cruz(es) can *afford* to be irresponsible. Unlike most of us, should one of their daughters become seriously ill they can pay for her care ‘out of pocket’.

Pro-life is not the same as forced birth. If people don’t care about children after they are born and fight for clean air & water, good schools, healthcare, and equal opportunity for all children, then such people are not really pro-life!

    • 17 jackiegrumbacher
      January 22, 2025 at 4:12 pm

Judith, the “prolife” label is as false as the names the Republicans give to bills that end up harming us. There is nothing pro life in wanting women to die because of unsafe abortions and that is exactly what this is about. Abortions have gone on since humans first walked the planet and will go on until we die out as a species. What Roe v Wade did was to make abortions safer because women could openly go to a professional medical person. Take away “reproductive rights” under the law and more women will die and that outcome is okay in their minds because women must ‘obey’ them or suffer the consequences, no matter how dire.

So the EPA administrator for the region including Flint Mi has resigned?
The mayor there is a democrat, the governor is a republican?
It seems the federal government has restrictions by law on what they can and can’t do without permission?
This republican governor is very coy about this whole thing. We knew they were going to blame the federal government sooner or later.
What I keep positing, if the federal government knows that if they make a mistake they will be put on cable news on a loop, with congressional hearings. Why aren’t they more careful about how they approach things?
    I know I would be.

Which is why watching a grown man act as if he’s 19 years old, is so depressing. As we discussed earlier, Krugman had the good sense to look at reality and actually change his mind and outlook. WTF is the matter with Bernie?

          January 22, 2025 at 4:24 pm

The stupidity is overwhelming, Chips. I was at a meeting with a bunch of people that think like this and I wondered how they could go through life-most were senior citizens-and know so little. They haven’t any idea of how things get done at the federal level and the obligations a president has. Nor do any of them acknowledge that there’s only so much a President can do with a Congress determined to obstruct him. What PBO has accomplished with the Congress he has is nothing short of miraculous. But he did not give them EVERYTHING they wanted when they wanted it, so he failed.

    • 61 57andfemale
      January 22, 2025 at 1:40 pm

“Remember, too, that the institutions F.D.R. created were add-ons, not replacements: Social Security didn’t replace private pensions, unlike the Sanders proposal to replace private health insurance with single-payer. Oh, and Social Security originally covered only half the work force, and as a result largely excluded African-Americans.”

      • 62 jackiegrumbacher
        January 22, 2025 at 4:29 pm

FDR and Lyndon Johnson had MAJORITY Democratic Congresses for their entire terms in office!!! They had nothing like the obstructionist majorities that PBO has to deal with. And people during he thirties and forties actually wanted the US government to succeed. Even so, if it hadn’t been for Eleanor egging him on, FDR would never have been half the president he was.

“Clinton’s ad is the exact opposite of the Sanders offering. His ad is almost as white as the Oscars. Her commercial could be described as “a gorgeous mosaic,” as former New York mayor David Dinkins liked to call the Big Apple. Not only is it chock full of people of color, the ad has all kinds of people. A same-sex male couple kisses. A disabled woman wheels up to the camera. A Muslim woman in a hijab. Sanders says nothing. Clinton makes her case for being president.”

        January 22, 2025 at 3:59 pm

He sees only economic issues. Don, I am totally astounded at the lack of depth in Bernie Sanders. He is tone deaf, he is blind - and if he doesn’t see things through his narrow prism, then he doesn’t care and sends out his minions to insult the rest of us who do care. Sanders supporters make many of the PUMA’s look absolutely tame.

And seriously, Hillary seems genuine in her embrace of PBO’s presidency. I know I’m searching for ways to be comfortable with her, but she’s looking sincere to me.

And Sanders could ruin the history of this nation. Let’s be clear - Ralph Nader did. We would not have had Bush as POTUS. We would not have Alito, Roberts. We would not have invaded Iraq. We would not have crashed the economy and turned this country into a bunch of RWNJ’s. America would be a different place if Nader had not been in the race. The country is in exponentially worse shape now and the future is terrifying, & Bernie and his supporters are singing the same Nader tune.

Sanders is first and foremost a Marxist. His whole world view is about economic class struggle with the wealthy being evil. I read one of his speeches a few months ago and he admonished his supporters of even talking about race, rather they should only talk about class. He is a product of the New York radical Marxist culture of the 50s and 60s, hangs out with old communist party members, etc.

57, I am totally afraid of waking up to a President Cruz or President Trump. Both are horrible human beings, but democrats have a tendency to stay at home if they don’t get what they want. I can totally see this happening with the Sanders crowd since they are mostly young. I am sorry that the radio host was demonized by Sanders’ supporters. PBO attracted a lot of young voters but he ran a kinder campaign. BS comes across as being very angry. HRC was able to persuade her followers to support PBO but I don’t see that happening if Sanders is the nominee. I hope that I am wrong.

Okay, got all my “wintery” tasks done- you know stuff I should’ve done BEFORE winter & blizzards & such ;) Bring it on #Snowzilla ! Snow has been coming down steady for about an hour or so here in Baltimore… weather folks got the timing right. Winds concern me, too Sheri. Our snow starts late tonight and goes through tomorrow, according to the weather service. But the winds are expected to be high and that’s what brings down electrical lines, causes accidents and turns ordinary outdoor items into missiles.
