GM. Checking in from the frozen tundra to say that everything is white-the ground, the sky, the air-and its cold and windy. We are cocooned here until the plows come through, but at least the electricity is still working and the coffee is hot. Hope other Eastern TODers have power today and if you live where the sun is shining today, enjoy!

Now that would be fun, Chips, but you’d all have to helicopter in and, oddly enough, we don’t have a landing pad. As long as the powerlines don’t go down, I’m cool.

        January 23, 2025 at 9:04 am

Roberta, we’re about 95 miles west of Philly, so we get slightly different weather patterns. I’m pretty sure we’ve already surpassed 24 inches and the snow keeps falling. The good news from our daughter in the DC area is the snow wasn’t as bad as expected, so she and our little granddaughter will be able to get outside later today. For a three-year old, that’s a big deal, as you know.

ALL THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS NEED TO GO TO JAIL

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/22/health/flint-water-legionnaires-disease/index.html

A hospital in Flint, Michigan, reported Friday that low levels of Legionnaires’ disease bacteria were discovered in its water system.

The discovery came after the city switched its water supply and the medical staff noticed an increase in people coming in for treatment who were diagnosed with Legionnaires,’ McLaren Hospital said.

Legionnaires’ disease is a respiratory bacterial infection usually spread through mist that comes from a water source.

McLaren Hospital said it has taken corrective measures with its water supply.

All testing shows the hospital water supply “is well within safety and quality standards,” the hospital statement said, and no tests show McLaren was the source of Legioinnaires’ disease.

The hospital report is the latest negative news about the Flint water supply and the second piece of news about Legionnaires’ disease.

I’ve been out of the loop this week and had not heard about this. Horrific. There are no “I made a mistake” or “I’m sorry’s” that will fix this mess! It was PURPOSEFUL!

I have absolute disgust and rage about this whole situation! This is what their utter incompetence does to show that govt doesn’t work, leaving the part out where THEY fucked up the govt! This is the perfect scenario to make a political ad from…connect the dots! The same can be said of stupid ass tundra twit blaming her son’s drunken rage on PBO! I guess Donna Brazille ripped her a new one the other day…calling her a liar and pointing out that Republicans wanted to cut $1.4 BILLION from the budget meant for the CARE of veterans! But somehow, in some fantasy world that Republicans live in, PBO hates vets and does nothing for them, while Republicans are saints and love vets! Could not be further from the truth! Americans need to wake the fuck up and stop pretending that Republicans of today care a damn about them. They don’t. Never will. They’ve all turned into damn Chuckie and they’re coming for us. All of us. It infuriates me!

Df, I feel your fury and I get absolutely frenzied with rage when some Democrats actually repeat the garbage spewed by Republicans and act as if PBO could have magically fixed everything without the aid of Congress. Stupidity has become America’s greatest enemy. In the whole course of US history, we’ve never had better communication or more means to access knowledge instantly, but people seem dumber than ever. I loved your “they’ve all turned into damn Chuckie and they’re coming for us.” Great image and so true. It made my day.

If there is anyone who could get her son help if he had PSTD it would have been a former VP candidate, a former Governor. If truth be told Palin’s son problem might be his Mother. GM MadameSoph.

Like DF, love winter in coastal Phoenix (aka southern CA).

We’ve had spectacular sunrises recently (clouds unfortunately obscuring the planets visible before sunrise), with no temperature extremes. Lows in 50s, highs in 60s. Heavenly.

BTW the rain that has fallen on points south and east have pretty much bypassed Ventura county :( .

This has me yearning for a road trip — the last El Nino I was in Death Valley over President’s Day weekend (when LA had rain in biblical proportions I was told) — absolutely spectacular, with western mountains covered with snow and sprinkles at Badwater that evaporated before it hit the ground (although some drops did fall on my windbreaker).

          Hi Arapaho,
Thanks for the reminder about the planet line-up. Next time I’m up too early I’ll hopefully be able to see them. You’re in Ventura county? I wanted to move there at one time but had a work conflict and had to stay put. Looking forward to lots of green on the hillsides into the summer, if this will be anything like the last El Nino. O.k. Off to work for me (never did get back to sleep until just before it was time to get up…..grrrr :-) )

Morning Donna. So glad you’ve still got power. It’s my biggest worry and I kept waking up in the night to check the electric clock to see if it still worked. We are completely socked in and could not even walk out the door without the hip waders that fishermen use. I keep thinking this is a good day to do all the “snow day” projects I imagine in the summer, like straighten drawers and organize the pantry. Funny how the chores seem less appealing when there’s time to do them.

Storks feeding on rubbish dumps instead of migrating are more likely to survive the winter, research shows.

The bird is among a growing number of migratory species that have changed their behaviour due to human influences, says an international team.

Until recently, all white storks in Europe migrated south for the winter, but now more are flying shorter distances to snack on food on dumps.

The white stork breeds from Europe to north-west Africa and western Asia.

White storks in Europe have traditionally flown south to spend the winter in Africa but in recent decades an increasing number have stayed closer to home, drawn to the food discarded at landfill sites.

    Bernie’s supporters are something else!!

Newsflash: Progressives can honestly disagree with your candidates position:

“And the response of some — only some — Sanders supporters is disappointing, although I guess predictable given that somewhat similar things happened during the 2008 primary. There will, I guess, always be some people who, having made an emotional commitment to a candidate, can’t accept the proposition that someone might share their values but honestly disagree with the candidate’s approach.

Right now I’m getting the kind of correspondence I usually get from Rush Limbaugh listeners, although this time it’s from the left — I’m a crook, I’m a Hillary crony, etc., etc.. OK, been there before — back in 2008 I was even the subject of tales about my son working for the Clintons, which was surprising because I don’t have a son.

But I’m used to this stuff. It’s a bit more shocking to see Mike Konczal — one of our most powerful advocates of financial reform, heroic critic of austerity, and a huge resource for progressives — attacked as one of Hillary’s minions and an ally of the financial industry.”

    • 103 jackiegrumbacher
      January 23, 2025 at 9:36 am

Donna, I am so done with the Bernie fantasists. He tells them magical stories about how they can achieve single payer health insurance without bankrupting the country, how the stranglehold of big business will crumble before him and how all will be right and fair in a Sanders world and they believe him. And worse yet, they tell you there is something wrong with YOU if you don’t fall into line. They refuse to acknowledge one achievement of President Obama’s because he didn’t deliver them immediate gratification of all their hopes in his first 100 days. Instead of focusing our energies on defeating Republicans, we are wasting time battling idiocy within our own party.

Hahaha! Verrrry funny. But actually I had a bit of a moment while considering this earlier this morning. When I was there, the building seemed ancient. Every once in a while someone would move a file cabinet and discover an old newspaper from the thirties or earlier and we would have a hearty chuckle at the gas prices. Many of the acoustic tiles in the modern dance classroom were either missing or hanging by a thread. Our dance instructor (so old she had actually danced in Martha Graham’s troupe) always assured new students that they never fell of during class. Ancient!! As I contemplated this anniversary, I realized the building was only built 48 years before I began attending…48 years doesn’t seem like so long ago now… So it was practically new when I went there, I guess. I’m still dealing with the repercussions of this thought. It was a huge school; there were 2,000 students in my graduating class. The building was
8 1/2 stories high. It took students from all over the city and had 28 different curriculums, from Science and Arts, Performing Arts, Chem Bio, Vocational Music, to Auto/Astro/Refrigeration. It was an amazing place.

wishing you safety throughout this blizzard.

please remind your son to take some regular breaks during his snow shoveling … sometimes lots of snow coming down makes you just keep working

Ha, Linda, my son takes plenty of breaks- never misses those! He’s in now, ate his pancakes and will continue to chill most likely for the duration ;) And thank you, we are well snuggled in and all things appear to have survived the weather. :) :) yay!

This is the only way I will fall in love and in line behind Bernie. No Bloomberg for me.

people in the media & punditry, most of which is based out of NY & DC, seem to thrive in a bubble and therefore feed on each other’s gossip to convince themselves about what the rest of the country and world is thinking about some personalities and events.

    it appears that Bloomberg’s potential presidential run is going to be their new toy and headlines for the next few days ….. this is perhaps the ONLY time I will thank heavens that there is an active #Blizzard2016 to divert us from all the airtime they would otherwise be taking up with “what are the implications of a Bloomberg run”;
