In a reversal from claims made on the campaign trail, Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign is now saying the senator and his family do have health insurance and never lost coverage. The late night Friday revelation came more than 24 hours after Cruz had told a New Hampshire audience that he and his family were without health insurance and were scrambling to obtain new coverage-and used the claim to slam Obamacare for the mess he was in.
In statements to Bloomberg and Wall Street Journal, campaign spokeswoman Catherine Frazier blamed Cruz’s false assertion that his family had lost their health insurance on a misunderstanding. She said an insurance broker told Cruz that BlueCross BlueShield of Texas was dropping his PPO plan, but Frazier said that the broker did not tell Cruz his family was automatically being transferred to the carrier’s HMO plan.

Incredible, I have BlueCross BlueShield which I switched to from Humana because Blue’s premiums were very low for my family and I. ‘In the wake of new Iowa and New Hampshire polls showing Bernie Sanders gaining, some say it’s time for Hillary Clinton to hit the panic button. “Clinton should ABSOLUTELY be nervous about the state of the race with less than three weeks before voters in Iowa head to the caucuses,” the Washington Post’s Fix blog blared last week. There are just two obstacles in this theory’s way: demographics and delegate arithmetic. In poll after poll, Sanders’s best group within the Democratic Party is liberal whites. Unfortunately for Sanders, Iowa and New Hampshire couldn’t be much further on the extreme end of the party’s demographic or ideological spectrum. According to our estimates, based on past exit polls and Census data, there is only one state where whites who self-identify as liberals make up a higher share of the Democratic primary electorate than Iowa and New Hampshire. You guessed it: Vermont.
In fact, 98 percent of pledged Democratic delegates will come from states with lower shares of liberal whites than Iowa and New Hampshire. Just 447 of 4,051 pledged Democratic delegates - 11 percent - are tied to results in states or districts with higher shares of college-educated whites than New Hampshire. Moreover, just 13 percent of pledged Democratic delegates will be awarded in caucus states like Iowa, which as 2008 proved, tend to bring out more liberal participants than primaries. In other words, if Sanders prevails narrowly in Iowa or New Hampshire, his support among liberal whites and in college towns - essentially Portlandia - would be entirely consistent with a scenario in which he also gets clobbered by Clinton nationally…continued”

Once again, CA casts its votes among the final group of states (DC is a week later, but they don’t have nearly 40 million residents).
I’m pretty much ignoring pundit blather and speculation about winners/losers, but would prove interesting if CA were a deciding factor this year. (Read an article [nytimes IIRC] that offered the theory that blue state GOP have an outsize influence on the outcome of primary elections.)

LA LOCHE, Sask. — As phone calls started coming in from panicked students and teachers about a shooter on the loose, RCMP sped down the street to the local high school and found its main doors blasted with holes.
Mounties say one officer quickly spotted a boy with a gun inside and chased him through the building. Within a few minutes, and without a fight, police say he surrendered.
But so much damage had already been done.
Saskatchewan RCMP say that during the eight minutes the teen was in the La Loche Community school on Friday afternoon, he shot nine people.
Two staff members died.
Then they learned there were more victims.
Two brothers, one 13 and the other 17, were discovered dead in a home not far away.
On Saturday, RCMP announced that they had charged a 17-year-old suspect with four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of attempted murder and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
He can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Wow, PF, that article and comic is the best explanation I’ve seen yet, of both the many different ways circumstances outside their control can advantage/disadvantage someone and also why so many people react negatively to simply hearing the word “privilege”
That cartoon could be a comparison of the differences between my ex’s and my life growing up. I have not had the kind of privilege that comes with economic advantages or family background connections and he had a soft landing every step of the way. But here is what I try to tell people who don’t understand the idea of “white privilege”: I have black ancestors but my skin is very light and my hair is straight. I don’t get profiled just walking around like my friends with dark skin do. Two daughters of friends are the same as I. One white parent, one black parent but they came out looking very white. The only reason they know about “driving while black” and other dangers/indignities experienced by darker skinned friends and family because they hear the stories and see these things happen in front of them. The problem is that if you don’t have family and friends of other shades/cultures you probably don’t know how real this is. One of my first boyfriends had a good job and was a good citizen but he had very dark skin and would get stopped by the police for ridiculous bullshit every other week - things like “rushing a pedestrian” etc. I try to share my dual knowledge/experience with “white people” who don’t understand and have seen the light bulb switch on sometimes when they finally get it.
Anyway, I gotta go to work, but also wanted to praise your earlier comparison of PBO to ObiWan Kanobi! That made my day! The Force is strong with our PBO! :-)

…. I am watching the candidates’ behavior and actions in the last few days and I can’t help shaking my head at the utter stupidity of some;

School is canceled today, and her 12-year-old son, sleeping in one of the apartment’s two bedrooms, will soon awake. She has to get the house warmer. So, as she’s done countless times over two heatless winters in this apartment, she reaches for the oven dial.
