This quote fits so well with my inner sense that aside from folks that come here and a few other places to share their daily awe at the President and his family much of the country will live through the Obama presidency oblivious to its significance. I know I have loved being cognisent of the importance while it is happening and no people have helped me do that more than right here. Blessings on our leader, our bt’s and everyone who comes here to share.

“…much of the country will live through the Obama presidency oblivious to its significance.”

I agree, catrst. And those of us who recognize it are blessed.

I believe, as do others, that the day will come that there will be those who will rue that they did not appreciate the treasure we have in Barack Obama as POTUS and will be dismayed when they understand that this country was cheated by allowing hatred and bigotry to stifle hope and suppress the change… the forward movement that could have been.

          GM catrst, swbluega.

It’s frustrating that in 7 years, MSM hasn’t budged a bit from their white supremacy POV.

MSM are so clueless that most don’t even realize that what they offer as “mainstream” is really “white supremacy status quo. The same is true for Sanders and Trump supporters too.

Our nation will continue to suffer from its original sins (exterminating and isolating Native Americans, kidnapping and enslaving Native Africans) until “mainstream” whites wake up to the fact that even benign education offered during Black History Month are NOT divisive, but rather a much needed way of becoming informed of industrious lives omitted from current American history.

Apparently there’s controversy now in Herndon VA about such education — this article quotes an evangelical radio host who makes this abominable racist comment:
“…radio personality Craig Johnson. ‘Now we have poverty pimps being led by our current president Barack Obama who all they talk about is the color of skin.’
          http://www.nbc12.com/story/31172753/controversial-film-shown-at-glen-allen-hs-slammed-as-white-guilt-video

This is the mindset of the 25% of voters who would vote for Satan before casting their ballot for a Dem.

We as a nation cannot make progress toward racial equality until people who make statements like this are universally ridiculed and shunned.

            Good Morning, arapaho415.

I sometimes believe that for the “white supremacy status quo,” the election of Barack Obama as POTUS was supposed to diminish minorities allegations of discrimination. As the WSSQ continued (and even expanded)their discriminatory actions, they would be able to point to the Black President to discredit the claim.

I also believe that the WSSQ intended to call the shots in this administration. When the GOP held their secret meeting to strategize making Barack Obama a one term President, they probably thought it would be easy to rein him in — this young man who was relatively green to DC politics - by making him ineffective. And I have no doubt that even though they may not have physically been at *the* meeting, there were some Democrats that were in on the plot; Democrats who thought it was not his turn — and thought it would never be his turn.

But to the dismay of the WSSQ, Barack Obama is a lot smarter than they anticipated…smarter than them even. To their frustration PBO could not and would not be *handled*. His strategizing was always 2 or 3 levels above theirs. He could not be manipulated into becoming that “angry black man”; one who would behave recklessly; who would make careless mistakes. PBO was able to adapt to their ever-changing rules of the game. To their perturbation, PBO was always the adult in the room, making their antics look childish and foolish as they doubled down because they didn’t want to be bested by him. They were jealous because he had the ear and the respect of the international community and its leaders. Their hatred for him supersede their love for this country that they claim to want to make great *again*.

I know these thoughts take conspiracy theory to the hilt, but given what we have seen over the past 7 years, and what this President has had to endure, some of these thoughts may not be completely off base.

Would America vote for an obviously qualified Black man for President?

Now, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that he was qualified - that wasn’t my concern.

I just wanted the answer to the question.

Its an interesting term and one I would not know but for OFA. Being able to attract “earned media” to an event is a skill and OFA teaches it in its outreach. Democracy for America did training like this as well and I assume still does. One thing I remember organizing a health care event was that if the “story” is basically written and handed to the media after they’ve stopped by to visit the event, you will more likely get your story out there and in the form you hope it will take. I am sure Trump does this. The irony is that ‘earned’ connotes worthy in our English semantics but its a much more neutral term in the world of pubicity and politics. Its good to do these trainings and they are even more available now than they used to be I hear.

Early in the year, I got a call from some Dems here in my town asking me to help with the Hillary campaign. I brushed them off, because I was still mad at Hillary for the campaign she waged against PBO in 2008. I knew I would vote in the general, but I wasn’t going to invest time in the primaries. But more and more, as I watch how so-called liberals/progressives are trying to elevate Bernie Sanders, I have made a conscious decision to work hard to make sure he is nowhere near the White House. Last night especially, after I saw that tweet, that Hope so wonderfully pushed back from a MSM, stating that Sander’s vote over Hillary was a rejection of PBO for more liberal policies, it cemented it for me. Today, I will call those ladies and will begin working for Hillary.

For me, it is all about PBO’s legacy. If Hillary is going to continue his policies, then I will work to ensure that she does. I also see the number of women that voted for Bernie over Hillary. How many of those same women voted for her last time around against PBO, when they did so because they were voting for a woman. What changed this year? I have said it time and again, the election of PBO exposed a lot in this liberal land. When Bill Press can say with a straight face that President Obama has done nothing, to my mind, there is something else going on. Progressives always wanted PBO to be sub-human. Nothing he did was enough. Some of them are no different than the Tea Party. They think by virtue of the fact that they have the liberal moniker is reason to disrespect the president. For me, these are some of the things I will never forgive.

How many of these same progressives spent any serious time vehemently condemning the ugliness visited upon President Obama when the likes of Trump asked for his birth certificate, and MSM reported it as legitimate news. Especially, for me, how many took to the airwaves to speak up when Mrs. Obama was disrespected- men and women? If they commented, it was in passing and done with very little care. They fail to accept the fact that President Obama has been herculean in the things he’s accomplished. Every single thing he did, he did with fierce obstruction from the GOP, right alongside the so-called moderates they like to tell us that are in the GOP. Accept for the stimulus and the one GOP vote(I think the guy lost his seat after that), if memory serves me right, every GOP voted against every single major policy put forth by President Obama. That he was able to get almost all of his campaign promises done, with such obstruction, is something I have never witnessed in my 30 some years living in this country.

As it pertains to Hillary, I am taking my cue from President Obama. I can almost believe in my heart that he would prefer Hillary over Bernie Sanders. This is a man that was in Congress when PBO was a mere child, and have done nothing that we can look at of any substance. Now, a GOP Congress is going to roll over for him? What’s galling to me is the number of liberals that I follow that are pushing this bunk.

For me, it is all about PBO’s legacy. Nothing else matters, because he gave so much for us. It is time for me to work to make sure his work is not in vain.

Sorry for my rant, guys. But if you’ve made it to the end of it, thanks for reading.

This is no rant, you are speaking the truth and I agree with you africatimes2. I think I will do the same, I will do all I can to get people out to vote, our primary is March.

    • 69 No Child Left Behind
      February 10, 2025 at 8:54 am

It’s not a rant. It’s what a lot of us feel. I have a hard time forget Senator Sanders’s desire (along with Dennis Kucinich’s) to “primary” POTUS. Then, his 12- or 14-hour filibuster of something the President has decided upon. Whether or not he attracts minorities is his calling. As it was reported earlier, his plan is to do without them.

The way I convince myself to cast my vote for him should he ever become the nominee (that is if Bloomberg doesn’t jump in and reshuffle the cards), is that his GOP opponent (whoever it is - Bloomberg, Trump, Kasich, Jeb!) will be a worse choice.

      • 70 57andfemale
        February 10, 2025 at 9:33 am

Sanders is still sneering at PBO, at Dems. He is terrifyingly dim on foreign policy, which is inexcusable. He does not want to be an actual, governing POTUS. He believes his “revolution” hype, which will drive ALL indies to GOP.

Whoever is the GOP nominee will say some mild, sane things, and the GOP voter will be “comfortable” enough to vote for their team. We saw it throughout the 2014 midterms, and we got raving lunatics in Congress and in governors’ houses throughout the country. I hear it from moderate GOP friends of mine, who cannot pull a lever for Dems if there is a shred of sanity they can hold onto.

Whether it’s false or true, Hillary is doing much better in this campaign, for which she gets zero credit from the media. She is knowledgeable, humble, introspective, and aware of the big picture. And not just supportive of PBO’s legacy, but she appears to actually understand it. This is not the same candidate we saw in 2008. It may be all for effect, but Bernie “leading” a condemnation of GOP in the Senate for dissing PBO’s budget isn’t political expedience?

    • 71 jackiegrumbacher
      February 10, 2025 at 9:09 am

Africa, as always, you are right on the money. If I allow myself to think about the betrayal of PBO by the so-called left, I get so filled with ranch that I become ineffective as an activist. We have to take a deep breath and move forward, which is why I, too, am giving my full support to Hillary Clinton. She will carry on PBO’s legacy and will add her own. This is now my course for the year ahead as well as helping to elect as many down ticket Democrats as possible, especially in the Senate.

Does anyone know what time PBO’s speech in Springfield is today?

This article highlights the staggering impasse of Illinois government (know the feeling, in 2009 CA was on the brink of falling off the fiscal cliff).

And it says that @jonfavs contributed to today’s speech.
“‘The central message beginning in 2004 and throughout the 2008 campaign was: We are not as divided as our politics in Washington would suggest,’ former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau, who helped write the Springfield announcement, said in an interview. ‘And Obama wanted to use his time in Springfield as an example of how people of different views and parties could come together and make progress.'”

Just my observation and pure opinion, illinois is so badly broken and deeply morally corrupt i don’t know if it can be governed by good people who want to help the poor, working poor and people living on the brink. I’ve met many people from Illinois and they are so cynical. One guy told me state senator Obama was corrupt like most illinois pols. I told him PBO was not raised or grew up in Illinois to be part of the corrupt illinois politics. He grew up in Hawaii, he was raised by people from Kansas with a different midwest mindset. He of course poo pooed me.

Thus, eventually resulting in a ghost-town.

RanMan, I do hope you haven’t sent this yet. There is a glaring spelling error in the title. The word Residence should be Residents. Residence means “the place wherein you live.” Residents is the plural of resident…a person who lives in some specific spot.
I know this may seem picky, but spelling errors have doomed other petitions and recommendations. Please have an English teacher check all spelling before sending.

It changes the over context in that it would refer to only one residence or house in Flint. Here’s a good way to remember the difference: The White House is the residence of the President. The Obamas are the present residents of the White House. Also, for anyone reading, note that the plural of Obama, meaning all four of them, is Obamas, not Obama’s. That would be the possessive of one of them: President Obama’s wish is for all to have health care.

The letter and the meaning are superb, and so necessary. Thanks for responding so quickly. I hope this letter has a positive effect.

I so agree with this RanMan. There have always been only 2 choices - the cost of both will highlight the minute savings that cost a city its water supply

      1. Replace ALL water pipes immediately
      2. relocate the population immediately

On a somewhat smaller scale when a town in Australia was wiped out in a cyclone Christmas Day 1974

“Tracy killed 71 people, caused A$837 million in damage (1974 dollars), or approximately A$4.45 billion (2014 dollars). It destroyed more than 70 percent of Darwin’s buildings, including 80 percent of houses.[4][5] Tracy left more than 41,000 out of the 47,000 inhabitants of the city homeless prior to landfall and required the evacuation of over 30,000 people.[6] Most of Darwin’s population was evacuated to Adelaide, Whyalla, Alice Springs and Sydney, and many never returned to the city. After the storm passed, the city was rebuilt using more modern materials and updated building techniques.”

He took responsibility for *Saturday’s* debate performance. But he felt that the *media* made it hard for him to get his message out between Saturday and yesterday.

But it wasn’t just MSM…social media weighed in as well. And comments weren’t just about his Saturday performance; they were about his performance in general…his dependence on memorized talking points, and his lack of ability to think on his feet.

If not in NH, the intense scrutiny was going to happen, as long as he remained the establishment’s choice, and especially if he became the GOP frontrunner.

Honestly, I just don’t see more than token effort on his part…not any qualities that would make him the golden boy for the party. But then again, PBO has raised the bar so high, there’s no way he could measure up.

In truth *I* *feel* for Rubio about as much as he feels for anyone but himself, his family and his cohorts. I hold for him the same measure of disdain he shows for others (incl. Hispanics) who are only seeking to get a fraction of what he’s gotten in America. Rubio wouldn’t measure up to the bar even if PBO had not raised it - he seems like a perfect live model of an empty suit IMO.

I made an earlier comment about something I heard. Some Bernie supporters were debating voting for Bernie or Trump. Go figure. I wouldn’t be surprised that a good fraction of those Bernie voters are either Republicans or plants, or low-info voters who blame POTUS for what he hasn’t been able to accomplish irrespective of the Congress POTUS has been dealing with.

There should be no open primaries. You should have to declare your party affiliation on your voter registration, and only be allowed to vote in that party’s primary. This is seriously effed up. Too much shenanigans.

Uh huh.. “Roger Simon/:Politico” will take with salt.. but, I do know many are excited about Hillary. 170 African American Women Leaders are going to South Carolina to knock on doors and make phone calls for Hillary, including Angela Bassett. The CBC is endorsing Hillary later today.. AG Holder has endorsed Hillary and made an excellent ad for her.

The head of Dreamers in Nevada has endorsed Hillary Clinton.. Astrid Silva~ http://lasvegassun.com/news/2016/feb/03/prominent-dreamer-from-nevada-endorses-hillary-cli/

PBO definitely wants her to carry on his Legacy and only build on Obamacare.. not tear it apart. All these esteemed leaders wouldn’t endorse just anyone.

This is my take on last night voting, I am not impress by Bernie or Trump win. The fact that they would vote for a racists, sexists, foul loud mouth bully, like Trump speaks volume as to what kind of people they are. I am not impress at all. As for as Bernie supporters, where have they been at the last seven years? Because if Bernie were elected they do know that Bernie will have to get bills through the House and Senate. The Dems might have a chance to get the Senate back, but they won’t get control of the House. So please tell me how would Bernie, get all he is talking about pass? Do he think the Republicans would pass them because he is old and white. I blame the Progressive for Speaker John Boehner, so if anyone let anyone down it’s the Progressives and anyone who didn’t get out to vote and let the Republicans get control of the House, Senate, Governorship. And when Bernie lose to Hillary, we will see how Bernie supporters act.

    AlGiordano @AlGiordano
Why Democratic turnout is underperforming GOP turnout may be the most important question to answer today.

    AlGiordano @AlGiordano
The roughly 250,000 voters in NH Democratic primary underperformed from the 280,000 in 2008 even with the influx of Ron Paul Independents.

    AlGiordano @AlGiordano
GOP turnout in NH however increased from 2008’s 234,000 to about 290,000 even with the exodus of libertarians. Who are these new voters?

    AlGiordano @AlGiordano
Lower turnout is even more of an alarm button for Democrats considering that we’re only talking about white voters so far in Iowa and NH.

    AlGiordano @AlGiordano
The numbers show that even among white Democrats a significant part of “base” feels neither inspired by Sanders nor Clinton.

So far, Bernie is under-performing PBO by quite a lot. He is far less inclusive, has no over-riding positive vision for the country, will turn off hoards of voters with “Revolution!” But he’s somehow better than PBO?

Benen’s morning comments about Thirsty Marco:

    Marco Rubio

The Pitch: Is it too late to roll out Lieberman’s “three-way split decision for third place”?

The Buzz: Rubio had every possible advantage. After Iowa, he had the endorsements, the punditocracy’s creepy affection, the money, the “momentum,” and poll support. He managed to blow it anyway.

The Truth: Let’s dispel with the notion that Marco Rubio knows what he’s doing. He hasn’t the foggiest idea what he’s doing. The Florida senator expected a second-place finish; he might have been able to spin a third-place finish (again); but coming in fifth, and leaving New Hampshire without winning any delegates at all, is a genuine disaster. Most of the state’s voters made their decision after the debate, which meant Rubio ruined his own chances. Recovery will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, and his “3-2-1” strategy is dead.

I’m going to go out on a limb here about the national Democratic Party and its convention. There’s no doubt in my mind that Hillary Clinton will go into the convention with the required number of delegates to win the nomination. There’s is also no doubt in my mind that the National Democratic Party will do everything it can to enable that outcome because it will NOT nominate a declared Socialist who is not a registered Democrat!!! Unlike the dysfunction on the Republican side, the Democratic Party, for all its faults, actually does exercise a lot of institutional control. There will be pressure brought to bear on all Super delegates, which include all elected Democratic members of Congress and other officials, to cast their votes for Hillary and there will be pressure for endorsements. So don’t worry about who or who will not be the nominee for the Democratic Party-it will be Hillary Clinton. Focus instead on what it’s going to take to defeat whoever emerges from the debacle on the Republican side. That’s the war we will be fighting and that’s the war we have to win. And if there are disaffected Bernie supporters who tell us next fall that they will not voting for Hillary Clinton those people had better get out of our way.

I hope you are right. To me the worst scenario is having R’s in charge of all 3 branches of government and losing all of PBO’s progress plus all of our party’s platforms and social structure not to mention world stature.
The second worse scenario is having Bernie Sanders give away all of PBO’s accomplishments in recklessly thinking he can throw them out to get a more liberal platform only to discover his revolution ran into a GOP roadblock.

GOP establishment stares into the abyss

After Trump’s big win and Rubio’s collapse, Republican Party elites suddenly find themselves without a horse to ride.
    By Alex Isenstadt

MANCHESTER N.H. – For the establishment wing of the Republican Party, the picture just keeps getting bleaker.

Far from winnowing the crowded field of mainstream GOP contenders and allowing it to unify around a standard-bearer, New Hampshire thrust it further into chaos. Marco Rubio, after taking steps last week to coalesce the backing of the party’s upper echelons, saw his momentum halted in the state, which punished him for delivering an overly scripted debate performance.

The establishment lane is now more crowded than ever, with Rubio, Jeb Bush, and New Hampshire runner-up John Kasich heading for a brutal fight in South Carolina – a state known for its rough-and-tumble political culture. Chris Christie, who was also competing for establishment support, is reassessing his campaign’s future.

<3 I remember this day so well: my very frail and elderly client at the time was an active member of the LWV, had founded and maintained the group here in Seattle in her career days. Needless to say, she was a big Hillary fan. As soon as she told me about then Sen Obama announcing, I told her he would be the next President. She didn't believe me, and she had passed away before the election in 2008, so we never got a chance to talk about it. But I knew, I just knew, and never wavered at all. :bear: <3
