Best day ever with Obama

Obama Foundation
Hi Gail,
Our friends over at the Obama Foundation are starting up a new project this month called Best Day Ever, in which they collect personal stories from people like you and me about President Obama’s time in office.
I was there in Springfield the day it all started, exactly nine years ago today, when Barack Obama announced his candidacy. But today I want to share a memory with you from the night before.
Check out my Best Day Ever and submit yours, too.
Best Day Ever.
Keep reading.
Once you’ve read my story, we’d love to hear yours, Gail. Each of us has a Best Day Ever—a speech that inspired us, a policy that changed things for us, or a moment we’ll never forget—and the Obama Foundation wants to hear from you.
Gail, what was the moment that made you proud to be part of Obama’s America?
I know this is an old thread, but for me it was the repeal of dont ask dont tell. The ceremony they held with military in attendance and what it meant to so many will always stay with me.
PF, I am sorry to say, but Ta-Nehis Coates, like Cornel West and Michael Eric Dyson, is so full of himself! He is trying so hard to be regarded as the “premier” Black intellectual! But I am sorry to say that their writings are not as profoundly insightful as the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson, Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, Langston Hughes, Arthur Schomburgh, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Harold Cruse, James Cone, John Hope Franklin, Vincent Harding, Derrick Bell, Judge A. Leon Higginbothom and Randall Robinson.
*This* is the *best* citizenship speech ever! God, I hope these Illinois politicians are really, truly listening. I hope that the media idiots who are there are really listening.
Sheri, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that PBO just *launched* (even though this is not a new topic for him) his campaign as a leading citizen going forward! :D
Waddle and Crump. Dang it, I missed the whole thing, except the last 30 seconds, so at least I got to see our Dear PBO and hear his voice again today! A blessed day!! I hope he has a heck of a wonderful time in CA, plays some superb golf, and laughs wholeheartedly at how weird this election season is!! He knows it’s quite serious, I’m sure of that. <3:bear:<3
Me too, GGail! I feel so blessed to be alive during the Obama presidency. To be perfectly honest, when he announced his candidacy I was absolutely skeptical that this country would elect him. As it turned out, a substantial white minority joined with the overwhelming numbers of people of color to elect and re-elect this incredible man with an equally incredible wife! As a black person, I grew up singing about letting my little light shine. I don’t care what the haters say, but President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, their precious daughters, Gradmama Robinson, and the entire Obama family, have clearly let the little light for Black people shine. Sure haters will be haters, but the world outside the U.S. Recognizes the integrity, grace, and common sense of President Obama.
With all due respect, Carly Fiorina flopped as Senatorial candidate in California, in 2010. Why did she think she would do much better as a presidential candidate in 2016? It’s plainly obvious that not all rich people are smart people; and especially when it comes to being able to navigate and master the complexity of U.S. Politics.
Carly’s goodbye speech is another big lie. She was all about the 1%. Won’t miss her or Christie.
Thank you President Obama for a very clear lesson in political civility which even some of the hardened partisans in your audience were plugging their ears to avoid hearing.
Well done Meta! Thank you for speaking/writing TRUTH to make sure that the haters of President Obama will not get away with re-writing history and falsifying President Obama’s record. The peddlers of right wing propaganda are so determined to tarnish President Obama’s image and historical standing..
The arrogance of people like her in the Republican Party simply amaze me. How someone who destroyed a company and walked away with a golden parachute and hasn’t had a real job since that walk can become someone that our media and their party takes seriously for the highest office in the land is beyond me. I know PBO just told us to try and be civil but no Democrat with her credentials would have made it this far and we all know it.
This was a MAGNIFICENT speech. Another one for the ages. If anyone missed it, please make an effort to watch the
replay that I am sure will be posted here. There will never be another like him….President Barack Obama! We are truly blessed.
DonnaDem, thank you so much for your post on the earlier thread about your reasons for supporting HRC this time. It was so perfectly stated and echoes my own. I have a dear friend that can’t stand HRC since the ’08 campaign and late last year was saying “anybody but”. She doesn’t follow politics much but I know her views enough to know she wouldn’t be a Bernie Sanders supporter. However, knowing how much she resents HRC, I am worried she would make a “anybody but her” vote. She respects my opinion though, and so I know I will have to explain my support for Clinton at our next girls night dinner. I am going to actually print out and read your comment to her as I think it is a short, but perfect explanation of why, if we love and support PBO, we must vote in the interest of preserving his legacy and follow his lead in 2016.
I remember the day that Barack Obama announce his candidacy. I was all in from day one. In fact, I was all in from the 2004 speech at the Democratic convention :-) I will continue to be all in for the rest of his and my days. Every vote I cast in this and future elections will be cast in the interest of preserving, protecting, promoting and continuing his legacy and achievements.
I am pasting your comment here, for those who missed it:
Donna Dem on why support HRC this time:
~~~
“This was such a memorable day for me. This was during the time that I used to watch MSNBC religiously. I can remember coming home and turning on the TV and all these young, invigorated, smart, techie people were on the show talking about all this innovative (at the time) stuff that they were going to do with this campaign. My excitement was off the chart. I had waited 4 years for this moment to come and it was finally here.
They directed us to his website (which was the envy of all of politics) and that was my first venture into online activity. I lurked on that site for almost 6 months before I posted a single comment. Everyone seemed so in-tuned to what they were doing and I was such a novice to this new phenomenon. Over the years (before they destroyed it with trolls and incompetence) I met on the Obama Blog site many committed supporters like J’OB, Meta, PrettyFoot, Jackie4Obama, Sue, Sam from the UK, MightyPamela, Theo67 and many others (forgive me if I left some out) that are now a part of this site daily.
We fought with everything we had to beat the mighty Clinton machine. There were moments of triumph and moments of anxiety but we never gave up the fight. We knew that history and karma was on our side and in the end we won and there was no greater jubilance than the night that he was declared President Elect of the United States.
This is why in this year’s election it isn’t so much to me about Clinton and her character, trustworthiness or what she did or didn’t do in 2008 it’s about the struggle that this President has had to endure to get ANYTHING done. And yet, he has persevered with many successes along the way. I marvel at his patience and fortitude and I want my grand babies to pick up their history books 10 years from now and read about how we elected the first African American President and the legacy of Obama Care and Dodd Frank and I will not stand by and let anyone take that away from him. Those things will not be a footnote they will be a full chapter in our US History.”
We fought that machine because our beloved candidate was inclusive, reached out with honesty and authenticity. Until the GOP decided to use his God-given gifts against him and refuse to hear him or work with him, we all (rightly) believed that Barack Obama could unite this country. Had it not been for RW media, he would have. The world appreciates him more than many in his own country.
There were no purity tests. There were no testy retorts. There was a continual effort to make Americans comfortable with his candidacy and his presidency. We weren’t lectured or talked down to, and we certainly weren’t bellowed at. Bernie Sanders is no Barack Obama.
If Hillary has become a consummate actress, so be it. But she’s never been a great actress. I want to believe that she has truly learned, that she truly appreciates PBO’s legacy and understands the peril of not continuing it.
What…was he trying to make sure he had a place in a Trump [gag] administration before he bowed out? Does that mean he won’t be endorsing an “establishment” candidate?
Christie expected to suspend campaign this afternoon after "long talk" with Trump: https://t.co/rgpFRGKY8i pic.twitter.com/8SWdMlTZvt
I have to respectfully disagree with this as she’s been going around the country listening to people, including many AA folks this past 1-2 years. Whatever her motives, this is not a stupid woman. She knows she needs the Obama coalition and she’s trying; she’s not perfect for sure, but then no one is (except Obama :D).
Hi Betsy, I agree.. I reposted to you what I said to the one who wrote that tweet..
Sorry, that isn’t true. Whoever wrote that hasn’t been paying a bit of attention to Hillary Clinton.
AG Holder has endorsed her, John Lewis, the Black Caucus is endorsing her tomorrow. 170 African American Women Leaders are going to South Carolina to knock on doors and make phone calls for Hillary.
These esteemed people don’t endorse someone who “only realized she needed black voters after Feb 9th”. That’s just an ignorant cheap pot shot.
This speech focused on respect, empower, include perspective. It also debunked the worst of the ethos of this campaign cycle. God bless this man. He is one for the ages.
Ha!
You’re on a roooooooooooooooooll!!!!! :-)
I’m trying to keep up with you :D
GGail!!!! Congrats on first! :-D
furst.
In another continent :-)
Hiya amk /waving/
I think I submitted this a while ago
It would be a toss up between the passage of the ACA and his announcement of the demise of OBL, sleeping with the fishes.
I know this is an old thread, but for me it was the repeal of dont ask dont tell. The ceremony they held with military in attendance and what it meant to so many will always stay with me.
I’m watching the President’s arrival and they are so excited!
He sure looks good there in the Illinois State Capitol
And he’s calling out the media and ‘dark money’ too.
*This* is the *best* citizenship speech ever! God, I hope these Illinois politicians are really, truly listening. I hope that the media
idiotswho are there are really listening.Yep it was a speech for the ages - I only heard the last of it, but oh my goodness!
Sheri, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that PBO just *launched* (even though this is not a new topic for him) his campaign as a leading citizen going forward! :D
yep, I agree with you.
Yo! VC! Waving from a lovely, wet Seattle day!!
Yo, back at you, MP! Been thinking about you in this February month. ;)
I would like to believe that this would be the case if this woman were Black.
Why does she still have this high paying job?
Because she’d sue over “religious discrimination.” Then go work for a church, and get out of the commons.
Waddle and Crump. Dang it, I missed the whole thing, except the last 30 seconds, so at least I got to see our Dear PBO and hear his voice again today! A blessed day!! I hope he has a heck of a wonderful time in CA, plays some superb golf, and laughs wholeheartedly at how weird this election season is!! He knows it’s quite serious, I’m sure of that. <3 :bear: <3
What a speech. What a speech. I am so sorry that he can not run for a third term. What a President.
We already have a outstanding President and First Lady, why do they have to go 2017?.
Annieb, maybe because their next major role is to lead us all into being exceptional *actively participating* citizens?
“If 99% of us voted, it wouldn’t matter how much the one percent spent on our elections.” ~PBO February 10/2016
It is not possible for me to love him any more than I do. He is a treasure.
Honestly, I just feel like he surprises me every day, and each day my respect and love for him deepens.
He makes me want to just shake his hand and say thank you
THIS!!!! I really enjoyed this speech. Such an honest tell it like it is speech.
That makes two down today ;)
please, who else quit today?
Christie earlier today and now Firorina
oops, thank you- I did read about Christie, completely forgot about him!
HAW! I don’t blame you!
:)
Christie.
Donna, I think you and I went to the same place. Heh.
Yep. He’s so fine and he doesn’t even try :cool:
PBO is the finest President of my lifetime in many more ways than one ;-)
(Don’t tell anyone but he’s the only President I’ve ever had a “naughty mat” dream about - woke up and wanted to go back to sleep immediately :-) )
Here here!! I have to admit to the above!!!
OH MY!
O. M. G.
AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
Effortless elegance.
:D Very comfortable in himself is our PBO! Can’t say I’ve seen that so often, no matter where he is!
hehehe…Thank you Chris Christie :)
EXCELLENT CLIP:
PBO is so honest and says it in such a way that you’d be a fool to disagree with him.
One of a kind
I wish some of this was in the SOTU speech.
Oh my! Popcorn time.
/shudder/ SW, can you picture these two bullies working together as co-leaders in *any* political organization? /my skin crawled at the very thought/
Only in my worst nightmare, VC. There needs to be an indictment handed down with his name on it SOON!!! Bridgegate…Hurricane Sandy…pick something!
Both. ;) In case he wriggles out of one
Perfect, meta!!!! :-D
I can’t help myself!!
From what I’ve seen of Trump, it wouldn’t surprise me if he reveals what the ‘long talk’ was about fairly soon.
what a w*** splat!!
OMG! The cutest, most adorable group of sweeties! The little girl in the middle looks aware beyond her years. Beautiful!
ABSOLUTELY….THEE BEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL CHOCOLATTA!…PRICELESS!
These lovely little girls can grow up to be whatever they want. Thanks, Obamas!
