On This Day: President Barack Obama helps First Lady Michelle Obama off the stage after thanking the White House chefs during the State Dinner for President François Hollande of France on the South Lawn of the White House, Feb. 11, 2014 (Photo by Pete Souza)

Today
The President attends fundraisers for the DNC and DSCC in California. Later in the day, he will tape an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
This is truth, Sw. Even small children pick up cues on the way we talk about and treat each other. I shudder to think of what they’re learning from the Trump/Cruz supporters in their families or the Bernie fans who condemn everyone who disagrees with them. It’s madness and truly corrosive to the soul.
I LOVE THIS PRESIDENT AND THE EXAMPLE HE AND MICHELLE HAVE MADE OF THEIR FAMILY…WITHOUT IT…THEIR DAUGHTERS WOULD HAVE GROWN UP IN A CESSPOOL OF DC SHOUTING CHAOS BECAUSE THAT IS ALL THEY HAVE GIVEN THIS FIRST FAMILY. I KNOW WHAT THAT IS LIKE..I HAD AN EX WHO TRIED TO KILL ME..LIFE FOR MY TWO CHILDREN HAD BEEN ONE LIVING HELL AFTER THE OTHER. THEN THEY CHOSE TO FOLLOW THEIR DAD…NOW DECEASED…WHO CONNED HIS WAY THRU LIFE. THE MONEY CLIMB HAS BECOME THEIR DEMON AND THEY WILL LEARN SOME HARD LESSONS FROM THOSE CHOICES. I WANT THIS FAMILY PROTECTED IN THESE HORRIFIC DAYS OF HATRED AND BLAME AGAINST THIS PRESIDENT. BE ALERT SS OR I WILL KICK YOUR ASSES FROM HERE TILL NEXT SUNDAY!
Thanks so much for posting. What Kasim Reed stated can not be said enough. I hope we will be able to see the entire interview. Any Democrat that gets near a microphone should be saying the same thing over and over again.
Reed’s points were absolutely spot on and all of us should be repeating them every day to every Democrat we meet. Sanders immediately disqualified himself in my opinion the moment he refused to acknowledge any progress made by the most Progressive Democratic president in our history-Barack Obama.
And far, far too few Dems are following his example.
Look for some ugly and racist Berniebro backlash. Black pols defending PBO’s accomplishments will bring it out…especially as Hillary racks up the delegate count.
Good Morning Chips, Congrats on 1st swbluega, GM pkayden. Have a great day. It a wonderful day when the FBI nabs Cliven Bundy. Don’t see it anywhere on the front pages. Our media at it’s best (snark).
Good morning Ms. Chips, Danny and TOD family, I hope all is well with everyone this lovely Thursday morning. Congrats swbluega, on being first this morning.
To all, I hope you desire to show your elegance, social grace, and sophistication today. <3<3<3
Thank God that President Obama is still the President of The United States of America. ⭐🏆 ⭐🏆 ⭐🏆
I’m thinking it wasn’t so much news to Rev. Al as it was not letting him get away with just making high level statements and thinking it is sufficient. The generalities allow him (and others) to get away with not following through because they did not specify *how* they plan to deal with the issue(s).
The Rev Al’s of the world have been around long enough to recognize the okie doke. They, and I hope those who are supporting Sanders (and Clinton too for that matter), will not allow the candidates to get away with making general promises to get themselves a second look, but will force them to get into the detail. If they are truly engaged in the issues introduced in their general statements, the specifics — well thought out specifics — will be there too.
Morning all. The photo above is our First Lady at her most magnificent. I’ve been staying away from all media sites-social and msm-that engage in Bernie glorification orgies. There is obviously a desperate desire among Republicans to run against a 74-year Socialist since he’s their one sure chance at the White House and the total destruction of our society, our democratic institutions and our planet. The fact that BS supporters think the NH win clears the path for them to the White House tells you everything you need to know about their naivete and their complete ignorance of how the long, slow slog through the 50 state primary process really works.
‘media sites–social and msm-that engage in Bernie glorification orgies’
GM, JackieG. I so enjoy your contributions in the village as you have such a beautiful and calm way of expressing yourself. :D Sending hopeful wishes your way that your Thursday will be blessed with very measurable, healthful improvements.
Thank you, JG. It is - you have only to read the report on PBO’s discussion with his former colleagues in Illinois to see why. PBO speaking about his presidency in his usual clear-eyed way. :D:D
Filings for unemployment benefits in the U.S. declined to a seven-week low as hiring managers demonstrated confidence in the outlook after temporary adjustments around the holidays.
Jobless claims dropped by 16,000 to 269,000 in the week ended Feb. 6, a Labor Department report showed Thursday. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey called for 280,000.
With staffing additions probably slowing this year as the labor market makes it tougher to attract skilled workers, employers are showing little appetite to reduce headcounts. A muted level of dismissals shows sales are holding up for companies even as the global economy and financial markets weaken.
“The labor market thus far seems to be on a good track,” Brett Ryan, U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. in New York, said before the report. “As you approach full employment, job growth is supposed to slow. So that’s one important part of this.”
gm TOD - the FBI seems to have Oregon under control - the media and the 4 holdouts seem to be providing all the evidence needed for their prosecution & the dimwits flying in to help should be aware who controls airports.
Of course, they are, Df. Everything is a side show to Sanders’ class struggle monomania. It’s as if he’s reading from textbooks rather than living in the real world. If women’s issues and those of people of color are side shows, what’s the main act? Angry white men again?
Income inequality he’s been screaming about his entire life. What he seems to not understand, that systemic racism is what has to be addressed.
I have to see if I posted the link to an article about Sanders’ early life. Nothing has changed. Nothing. It’s literally the same harangue since the 60’s. Word for word.
That’s what I was wondering too, JackieG. But then I wondered if it was too late for him to qualify. Plus, there is a democrat - Jack Conway - already on the ballot.
I was listening to the radio this morning, and got another example of White Privilege 101, 201, 301.
In the report talking about the Domestic Terrorists in Oregon, the reporter was like,
‘ They didn’t think it had to come to this. They thought that they would negotiate to go home…but, I guess that can’t happen since they were named in a federal indictment.’
YOU take over - WITH FIREARMS - FEDERAL BUILDING…
and, you think you should just be able to ‘ negotiate to go home.’
really?
seriously?
and, folks say that Black people are using WHITE PRIVILEGE for everything.
Never, in the history of America…
would an ARMED BLACK PERSON believe that any encounter with law enforcement…
THAT THEY INITIATE….
would wind up with anything other than arrest…and, that’s the glass half full scenario.
I’ll say it again….
If BLM had taken over a local park district building..
let alone a FEDERAL ANYTHING…
there’d be body bags lining the street in front of it.
Looks like PBO had a good time yesterday, meeting with his old poker buddies.
Article will be of particular interest for TODville Illinois residents:
You’ve got a whole generation of kids… where 1st president they’ve known is an AfrAmericanhttps://t.co/zkQJyKMBgw pic.twitter.com/OtqdT8pwgr
— Arapaho415 (@arapaho415) February 11, 2025
MSM needs to heed:
“Denny Jacobs, the rural Democrat who proudly mourns the days of the backroom deal”… said he thinks the wall was built before Obama even hung his clothes in the closet at the White House.
‘They were afraid of you for a couple of reasons. Number one, you were black,’ said Jacobs, a white man in his 70s.”
‘Nice’ article, thanks for bringing it to our (non-Illinoian ;) ) attention, Arapaho. Always feels good to enjoy an article that has no caveats re PBO. :):)
I really do wish President Obama wouldn’t chastise himself for any part of the partisan rancor over the past 7 years. I believe he did the best he could considering the toxic vulgarity and disrespect they’ve shown him time after time after time.
Wise men (and women) are always asking themselves if they’ve done enough. (You and I know he did more than enough.) To my mind, this is just another lesson we are learning from him “in the age of Obama.”
Well, some of us learn - some in this country will try to forget he ever existed. If I weren’t a nice person (Ha!), I’d find some ol’ Irish curse for the latter.
PBO really does reflect inorder to learn from the past to improve the future. He includes himself in that process instead of excluding himself and declaring himself perfect and infallible as so many politicians do.
“We have been closely following how war and conflicts taking place both in Middle East and Turkey affect Europe directly. The humanitarian devastation caused by war and tragedies occurring as a result necessitates an effective cooperation of international communities.
Particularly in fighting ISIL as well as similar terrorist groups and preventing the disasters that millions of people who were forced to become refugees go through, are problems that can be solved more easily by improving sincere co-operations of states and societies.
The unsolved Kurdish question and abandonment of negotiation process, followed by the return to the conflict and security concept again bring out a serious instability and extremely severe humanitarian price in our country. In this conflicted environment, serious human rights violations and unlawful arbitrary practices have become an almost routine policy of the government.
In such environment, along with leaning towards the revitalization of Turkey’s EU process, we have serious concerns that this process is being conducted with current political agendas in contradiction to the principles of EU. Especially the return of the refugees forced to immigrate to Europe back to Turkey or the issue of stopping the influx of the refugees in Turkey has created a public perception that the meetings you conduct with our government have evolved into a trade bargain.”
Thanks, Allison, this is a great share! Guys, you should go read it in its entirety.

Q: But they were — it was a common denominator. The President and I shared a tie to the University of Chicago. I represented Argonne Laboratory, run by the University of Chicago. And he was a very influential and very good member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and we worked together as lawyers, law professors. I learned a lot from him.
So I looked for common denominators with an African American, progressive Democrat from the city, with me being an obviously Caucasian suburban Republican. But it was those common denominators and threads that let us work together.
Q: Well, you were making the point earlier that it’s those personal interactions that help bridge those divides. And that made me wonder if, as you look back on it now, that was something you might have done differently in Washington.
THE PRESIDENT: This is interesting. What Kirk says is exactly true here in Springfield. The fact that we knew each other helped tremendously in terms of us being able to get things done. But what’s interesting, Kirk, is it’s not like I changed. I’m the same guy now that I was then.
TY so much, Allison! I’m still going over parts of it….again. It’s just PBO, as natural as always. I’ve bookmarked it on my laptop. I think I’m going to think of it as the *published* first draft of PBO’s post-presidency book.
That just confirms that the people at his rallies are *hearing* him, but not really *listening* to him and thinking about what he is saying. Probably being prompted when to clap.
Well Trump knows his supporters, he said he could stand in the middle of the street and shoot someone and his supporters would still support him. He knows he has a bunch of idiots supporting him.
THE PRESIDENT NEEDS TO HAVE A CHAT WITH THE POPE. THE VATICAN IS TELLING ARCHBISHOPS THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO REPORT SEXUAL ABUSE…AS ONE OF THOSE VICTIMS…GUARANTEED GOD’S WRATH WILL FALL UPON THEM!
I WAS THRILLED TO SEE AN ARTICLE ON SS NO LONGER ALLOWING GUNS IN THE WH….EXCELLENT…ALL MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN TO PROTECT THE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY!..DO NOT TAKE ONE DAMN THING FOR GRANTED!
I really, really think all TODobots should - if they haven’t already done so - read the article that Allison linked to above; it’s interesting all the way through.
// …………………………
THE PRESIDENT: And they were practical guys. But what was also true was they had room within their own party for a diversity of views.
Q: I wanted to come back and ask you about the way forward (inaudible.) But I do want to ask — you mentioned a couple of things that came up in several conversations with these two guys about how we got to this point, and how you got to this place of this polarizing, divisive figure, if you pardon the phrase. Kirk thinks that Obamacare is a lightning rod for partisan fury because of the way it was passed. And I wonder what you think of that.
THE PRESIDENT: Well, this will be a long history that will be told. And the good thing about being President is you get to write your own book. (Laughter.)
But I have to tell you, Kirk, and I’m sure that’s how it seemed from the outside. If you were on the inside, we spent eight, nine months negotiating with the Republicans. The Affordable Care Act — or Obamacare — was not my first choice of design. It was the result of our conversations with Republicans who would not abide by a single-payer plan. And so we said, well, you know what, let’s take this plan that has worked really well in Massachusetts, negotiated by a Republican governor named Mitt Romney, and let’s work with the Republicans to see if we can move this forward.
And what happened over the course of three, four, five months is that the dynamic I just described, the sense that those in the Republican Party who ideologically were opposed to expansion of any social welfare program started to characterize this as big government and an effort to undermine individual choice and individual freedom. They poisoned the well within Republican constituencies so much that it became increasingly difficult for Republicans who had originally wanted to work with us on this to do anything.
And I remember the last conversation I had with a Republican whose name I won’t mention — we had been talking for months, and we had taken every idea that he had suggested and we had said if this doesn’t work, is there another way you want to do it — and he just finally turned to me — I was sitting in the Oval Office — and he said, you know what, Mr. President, I got to admit there’s no change that allows me to vote for this thing.
I *particularly* <3<3 this part of the discussion! :):)
THE PRESIDENT: Well, this will be a long history that will be told. And the good thing about being President is you get to write your own book. (Laughter.)
Until Pres O gets around to writing his book this discussion with his former Illinois colleagues is a good starting point to see inside some of his thoughts on his political interactions while in the White House.
Thanks VC, That was a good read, especially the part you highlighted about the difficult passage of the ACA, how PBO wanted single payer, and how some Dems wanted to give up on the whole thing. That passage should be required reading for every Bernie booster.
Unfortunately, it would probably do no good. They’re to this day railing and ranting about how he sold them out negotiating from a compromised position. They’re beyond listening to logic. They hear what they want to hear, much like Trumpbaggers.
love this photo! and I think our president knows how images such as this capture our consciousness, open us to imagining the many roads to achieving our goals in life.
Very cool! I’ve always imagined that the shape of the Universe is like the yinyang symbol, so that when you reach full expansion of the “bang”, the other side of the duality begins expanding. The reason we can’t see beyond the first few moments of the “bang” is because the expansion of the opposite side of our duality bleeds into the smallest point of this side, what we call the “beginning”. I imagine black holes are just passageways from one side to the other with gravity holding the whole mess together. That’s why gravity seems weaker than it should to us. I want to do a paper on this someday, but I need more math skills to do the proof. :-)

Hello TOD.
Happy Thursday. Sunny. Cold. No Wind! Yes!
Congrats to all the Au, Ag & Bronze :star::star::star: winners since Tuesday evening, of course, starting with This Post ;)
Agree, amk. But, we better hold the ‘candle’ we’ve got as high as possible and keep it flickering until it ignites a fire that will ravage the GOP & all these lame, childish emoprogs on 8 Nov 2016.
So true. Sanders (like the GOP front runner) has yet to deliver details of the generous plans he has for the X-Gen, Y-Gen, Millennials and other humans who feel the bern.
I’m a Gen Xer and we are old enough to remember 2000 and before. Our generation was raised before kids got a giant party with bouncy castle for every single birthday. We remember 12 years of Reagan Bush. Also, some of the most die-hard Bern fans I know are Boomers. I feel like I’m caught between two me generations (not including the many supportive, practical Boomers or millennials like Nerdy, like we have here on TOD :-) )
He’s done nothing but spout this same speech since the 60’s. We should be terrified that a man has not changed one word of his shtick (or any of his ideas) in over 50 years. This is not an introspective, thinking, intelligent man. He is as unqualified to be POTUS as the GOP klown bus.
The dems fucked up in allowing him into their race at all. The same way thugs did with dreck. Both should have been forced into indie runs and then see where they stood.
If sd’s fix the game, I am afraid hillz will be painted as more and more of the trenchant establishment and many dems might not turn up. I want the sd’s away from the nomination fight just like I did in 2008.
Good Thursday, Chipsticks…TOD Family!!!
Be kind to others, but be kind to yourself as well. Enjoy your day!!! :-D

This was a powerful statemet, given our current climate. I watched this speech forever, constantly rewinding to digest it all. :)

Good Morning y’all!! Another beautiful day with our President and FLOTUS. Such a lovely photo.

Good Morning.
Did anyone see Kasim Reed on CNN this morning ? He really let Bernie and Chris Cuomo have it.
Atlanta mayor: Bernie Sanders dismissive of Obama

Thanks so much for posting. What Kasim Reed stated can not be said enough. I hope we will be able to see the entire interview. Any Democrat that gets near a microphone should be saying the same thing over and over again.
I know why CNN didn’t post the entire interview. They rather have someone who is going to trash POTUS.
I agree with the comments ….Sanders is a Fraud !

My day is made! :) :) :)
I hope the surrender is televised.
Think I would fall over in faint if it were. However, remember Ferguson and Baltimore-24/7 everywhere.
THE PRESIDENT NEEDS TO HAVE A CHAT WITH THE POPE. THE VATICAN IS TELLING ARCHBISHOPS THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO REPORT SEXUAL ABUSE…AS ONE OF THOSE VICTIMS…GUARANTEED GOD’S WRATH WILL FALL UPON THEM!
Sorry to hear that about your personal self Sue. Really enjoy your fun and laughs, so nothing got in the way of that for sure!
I WAS THRILLED TO SEE AN ARTICLE ON SS NO LONGER ALLOWING GUNS IN THE WH….EXCELLENT…ALL MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN TO PROTECT THE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY!..DO NOT TAKE ONE DAMN THING FOR GRANTED!
If he does decide to run as an independent, who would a Webb candidacy negatively impact more? HRC or BS … or maybe a Republican?
LOL LOL LOL
THIS GUY IS BAD NEWS…HE NEEDS TO SHARE A LAWN CHAIR WITH THE CAMOFLAUGED OREGON IDIOTS!..VERY TRANSPARENT……………….PROBABLY HANNITY’S GODFATHER!
BBL…DOMESTIC WORK CALLS…NO DISHFAIRY HERE…………….HOME ALL DAY…WILL CHECK BACK LATER!
I really, really think all TODobots should - if they haven’t already done so - read the article that Allison linked to above; it’s interesting all the way through.

I *particularly* <3 <3 this part of the discussion! :) :)
*Check it out - it's a read well worth the time!*
Thanks VC, That was a good read, especially the part you highlighted about the difficult passage of the ACA, how PBO wanted single payer, and how some Dems wanted to give up on the whole thing. That passage should be required reading for every Bernie booster.
:) :)
Unfortunately, it would probably do no good. They’re to this day railing and ranting about how he sold them out negotiating from a compromised position. They’re beyond listening to logic. They hear what they want to hear, much like Trumpbaggers.
Good Morning BFF and TOD.
love this photo! and I think our president knows how images such as this capture our consciousness, open us to imagining the many roads to achieving our goals in life.
This is a great piece. Thank you, JER.
it is always about the President…..amazing…
Obama and Hillary win that argument/
Gravitational waves from black holes detected.
Scientists are claiming a stunning discovery in their quest to fully understand gravity.
They have observed the warping of space-time generated by the collision of two black holes more than a billion light-years from Earth.
The international team says the first detection of these gravitational waves will usher in a new era for astronomy.
It is the culmination of decades of searching and could ultimately offer a window on the Big Bang.
The research, by the Ligo Collaboration, has been accepted for publication in the journal Physical Review Letters.

After two years, fbi arrests the white terrorist bundy on flimsy charges. yay.

Good Late Thursday Morning TODVille.
I hope in the midst of all this billionaire and millionaire talk senility is not settling silently. This Sanders guy has hot air in his head!
yup.
This drama continues…
As i and so many others have sad …No One can win the White House with out the Blk Vote…blk women in particular…this drama over who has or has not the blk vote….Sanders thinks the best way to get the vote is to bash and try to discredit the President..
Ellison…feels some kind of away about the CBC endorsement….he is in the Sanders Camp…
Keystone cops, running towards Bernie Sanders like he’s the second coming. Too bad you couldn’t show President Obama the same level of commitment.
yup
Hello TOD.
Happy Thursday. Sunny. Cold. No Wind! Yes!

This is a suit…that the DOJ has to win!
Make it so!
CHIPS, I sent you a DM ….. just before heading downstairs to find something to eat. :D
History repeats itself.
Names, please so we can expose them.
I think that Sec Kerry and PBO already know who they are.
The article didn’t quote any but insists on the veracity of the story.
YUP
josh’s disclaimer hedge notwithstanding, I am sure the thugs did just that.
really nato? yer still exploring the possibility while putin has gone full bore there?
Lying Ryan is insane!
PBO says: ” So Sue Me “….
Welp, so be it ….
h/t amk
bbl …
Thanks Bob.
Looks like saint sanders is looking for angry white votes by ranting about PBO. Guess who is gonna win that battle?
Our man with a plan Obama, as we both know, amk :)
And, hopefully HRC has the good sense to just go with the Obama flow …
There is always that nagging doubt about her, isn’t there? sigh … wish we had a better candie.
Agree, amk. But, we better hold the ‘candle’ we’ve got as high as possible and keep it flickering until it ignites a fire that will ravage the GOP & all these lame, childish emoprogs on 8 Nov 2016.
Oh Oh….It’s gonna get very interesting by the time SC votes.
Posted this myself as you were posting. It’s getting interesting by the moment Donna! Gonna have to pick up some popcorn today while I’m out :-)
Talk about feeling the burn….
Boom. High time saint sanders is vetted.
The dems fucked up in allowing him into their race at all. The same way thugs did with dreck. Both should have been forced into indie runs and then see where they stood.
Yes but we have the power of superdelegates to keep Sanders out of the WH. The Repubs don’t have any mechanism to keep Trump from being their nominee.
If sd’s fix the game, I am afraid hillz will be painted as more and more of the trenchant establishment and many dems might not turn up. I want the sd’s away from the nomination fight just like I did in 2008.
She’ll win. They are only there as a backstop.
The dems fucked up by blocking the field for folks to enter the race. This is all self inflicted.
They’re already on the attack against John Lewis from the looks of the TL. This will be…interesting.
Chat away
