The proposed package, a follow-on to the $30 billion, 10-year memorandum of understanding signed in 2007, would grant Israel more leeway – including reprogramming authority – over a considerably larger amount of grant aid than that provided in the current agreement.

There’s just one catch: Israel will have to forgo annual plus-ups to the president’s budget from Congress except for extreme emergency cases.

“The downside, of course, is we’ll lose the ability for annual plus-ups on missile defense, anti-tunnel capabilities and other programs funded by the Pentagon in all but the most-extreme cases,?a recently retired senior Israeli security official said.

Israel is the largest recipient of US security assistance, taking in about 55 percent of the State Department’s Foreign Military Financing (FMF) budget worldwide. US aid accounts for about 25 percent of Israel’s overall defense budget.

In recent years, congressional plus-ups for Israeli aid have exceeded the president’s budget request by much more than 100 percent. US sources calculated that since the start of the current 10-year agreement in fiscal year 2009, congressional plus-ups to Israel exceeded Pentagon budget requests by some $1.9 billion.

Last December, for example, Congress passed an omnibus spending bill that appropriated $487 million for US-Israel missile defense programs — more than three times the amount contained in the Pentagon’s budget request.

      **************************

This is a darn shame. American citizens can’t even get food stamps without republicans demanding they are tested for drugs and our roads and bridges aren’t being funded to get done. Why are American’s paying for this crap? Makes no sense.

Funding Israel in this huge manner makes little sense to me too, especially in the wake of Netanyahu’s dishonourable behaviour. Seems to me that Israel takes a lot for granted with not enough accountability, while its leaders can do what they want. Without knowing all the background details, I confess I find Israel’s sense of entitlement somewhat hard to swallow, especially given some of the heartless actions perpetuated in its name by Bibi. OTH, can you imagine *any* American politician attaching more stringent conditions on the aid Israel gets without a major blow-back?

WE HAVE ALWAYS PROMISED TO STAND BY ISRAEL…THEREFORE IT IS IMPORTANT TO HONOR THAT PROMISE..IT’S GOD’S HOLY LAND AND IT IS DEEPLY THREATENED BY ALL OF ITS NEIGHBORS WHO WANT IT TO VANISH FROM THE EARTH ALTOGETHER…WE SHOULD ALWAYS BEND OVER BACKWARDS FOR ISRAEL…CHRIST DIED ON THE CROSS FOR US WITHOUT ASKING FOR A TRADE-OFF OR BENEFICIAL OPTIONS…END OF STORY.

            February 13, 2025 at 4:55 pm

But that is really not the end of the story IMO - not when you consider that Israel doesn’t seem to want peace and that the country *has* progressed very well over the years. IMO some attention ought to be given to the threat Israel itself may have become. America has become this big brother hovering protectively over Isreal, while Israel hangs on to its legs while kicking out at others. Doesn’t seem right to me.

            February 13, 2025 at 5:09 pm

Sueduvall - with all due respect — standing by someone does not mean forcing an entire country to be your personal checking account and there is something very wrong for anyone to putting out those talking points to validate that somehow it is enough to support the biggest welfare scam in history. I did not make any such promise.

And let’s pretend that all Americans believed in God….Nowhere in the bible (old or new testament) does it say that the United States of America should use tax payer money to fund Israel’s penchant for war, oppression of a people, and whatever the crap they want to spend it on at the expense of their own citizens. I think that the belief that if America cuts off the flow of US tax payer money to Israel would somehow be the factor that destroys God’s Holy land and vanishes it from the earth is a huge pile of bullshit. God does not need man to fight his battles. At least my God doesn’t.

Oh and Christ died on the cross for all of us and guess what???? Jesus paid it all! So he did not leave outstanding bills for the USA to have to pay the difference. You said yourself that Christ died without asking for a trade off or beneficial option so why can’t Isreal get off the teats of the American tax payer?

If folks want to donate to Israel, fine, but to force an entire nation to foot the bill for this shit…yearly at the expense of our own citizens???? Bullshyte. Israel is the representation of what is considered a Welfare Queen. There should be laws against this. This is wrong on to many levels.

Not only that, but in the piece it says that Netanyahu says if he doesn’t get the right amount of money he’ll wait until the new president is in place and negotiate then. The arrogance continues.

          • 40 vcprezofan2
            February 13, 2025 at 4:59 pm

The situation is so entrenched that Netanyahu feels safe being offensive and arrogant with very little will to tell him to ‘stuff it!’ That is so wrong IMO. What I find sad is I see no glimmer going forward as to how to rein him and his (country’s) expectations in without them making a fuss about being abandoned.

by the way, SCOTUS legitimized Citizen United in their corrupt move to give gop advantage by introducing big money into campaigns.

but as with everything, the theory of “unintended consequences” is that it has made traditional parties lose control over who can be their candidate. I cannot fathom what SCOTUS thinks now.

    suspecting that after this election cycle, both the Dems & gop may make some modifications on the eligibility requirements for someone to run on their party’s ticket for POTUS and other elected positions…. hope I am wrong;

Thank you for posting this. I truly believe this needs to be on the tv and in the papers. It’s been swept under the rug for too long. I read one and can’t read any more. Just think, this only deals with the southern lynchings; would love to see the stats on the rest of the country. Reporting on the country as a whole would lay to rest the lie that racism, lynchings, etc. are a southern phenomenon.

But this is what the great Dr. Martin Luther King accomplished. Not that he marched, nor that he gave speeches.

He ended the terror of living as a black person, especially in the south. It wasn’t that black people had to use a separate drinking fountain or couldn’t sit at lunch counters, or had to sit in the back of the bus. It was that white people, mostly white men, occasionally went berserk, and grabbed random black people, usually men, and lynched them. You all know about lynching. But you may forget or not know that white people also randomly beat black people, and the black people could not fight back, for fear of even worse punishment.

This constant low level dread of atavistic violence is what kept the system running. It made life miserable, stressful and terrifying for black people.

If you get a chance …please read this….

The more i hear about Sanders trying to co-op the CR movement the angrier i get…

                February 13, 2025 at 5:14 pm

                More from this great article…

So yes, Dr. King had many other goals, many other more transcendent, non-racial, policy goals, goals that apply to white people too, like ending poverty, reducing the war-like aspects of our foreign policy, promoting the New Deal goal of universal employment, and so on. But his main accomplishment was ending 200 years of racial terrorism, by getting black people to confront their fears. So please don’t tell me that Martin Luther King’s dream has not been achieved, unless you knew what racial terrorism was like back then and can make a convincing case you still feel it today. If you did not go through that transition, you’re not qualified to say that the dream was not accomplished.
