Our president never makes it about himself; this alone makes him so blessedly different from most of those (and all of those currently vying for the position) who came before him.

Another thing that I reflect on many times is when the president said in election night 2008″ ” and to those of you who did not vote for me, I will be your president too.” Maya Angelou (and I think John Lewis as well) were all about Hillary, but it is PBO who has heaped them and others will honors and respect.

When you said that our president never makes it about himself I thought of the term ‘servant leader’. He is definitely a prime example of that. May his example and sacrifice fill us with wonder and a desire to continue in that direction when we select someone to fill our important jobs.

I pray we do not go from an all time great President to the total opposite. Donald Trump represent the exact opposite of PBO to me. He is far from humble. He is boastful, a braggart really. He does not listen or respect others. He is a con man in his businesses and is dishonest about his record.

      http://mediamatters.org/blog/2016/02/15/as-obama-moves-to-replace-scalia-the-press-enab/208599

      ————————————-

The sad part is this type of media acquiescence has become a hallmark of the Obama era. Republicans have routinely obliterated Beltway precedents when it comes to granting Obama the leeway that previous presidents were given by their partisan foes in Congress.

Yet each step along the way, journalists have pulled back, refusing to detail the seismic shift taking place. Instead, journalists have portrayed the obstruction as routine, and often blamed Obama for not being able to avoid the showdowns.

Today’s Republican Party is acting in a way that defies all historic norms. We saw it with the GOP’s gun law obstructionism, the sequester obstructionism, the government shutdown obstructionism, the Chuck Hagel confirmation obstructionism, the Susan Rice Secretary of State obstructionism, the Hurricane Sandy emergency relief obstructionism, and the consistent obstruction of judicial nominees.

For years under Obama, Republicans have systematically destroyed Beltway norms and protocols, denying the president his traditional latitude to govern and make appointments. It’s sad that in Obama’s final year in office, the press is still turning a blind eye to the GOP’s radical nature.

Thank God for him, literally, meta. That poor woman’s story is heartbreaking and I hope she not only gets out of prison, but is able to build a successful life for herself. It’s beyond unconscionable that her lawyer ignored any testimony about her abuse and the threats to her family. She was ill used by her husband and by society. I hope her children understand and will be waiting to help her.

I am going to buy this, but I have such a hard time reading theses stories. My mother had Alzheimer’s. My dad took care of her for 15 years. • 93 Obama Grandmama
      February 15, 2025 at 10:52 pm

What I heard on Lawrence’s show is it is unlikely that anyone PBO nominates will get confirmed due to the GOP Senate majority voting no in unison. I had heard on NPR today that it would require all Dem senators and fourteen GOPs to get to the sixty votes needed. I also heard Cruz say he would filibuster. It was said Obama might as well nominate the person he would like that would be the least affected by the wait. LL could go on with her current job while waiting for a potential confirmation.

What makes the Republicans think that if they win the WH that the Dems would not blocked their nominee for SCOTUS ?

  41. 96 prettyfoot58
    February 15, 2025 at 2:41 pm

Eight years of the George W. Bush debacle gave way to eight years of obstructing Obama, which has become Donald Trump and the disassembling of the Republican Party. Nationally, Republicans have been on a downward trajectory for more than decade.

I have been worried about the healing and support of the losing candidates supporters for the winning Dem candidate. It was smooth with Hillary but her supporters took it hard in 2008. We need everyone to vote Dem in the GE no matter who the winner is.

      • 98 prettyfoot58

i know the stakes..but this is my take …Hillary has to win…Sanders winning would splinter the party…his intent is to blow up the DEM party…he has no intention of moving forward on the agenda of the President….he has said that plainly…

    Pragmatism as a Strategy

Over the next couple of weeks we’re all going to spend time trying to guess who President Obama will nominate to the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. There will also be a lot of ink spilled on strategies that he might employ against the already announced obstruction to his nominee.

After having studied this President for about eight years now, I’ll wade in and tell you who I think he will nominate: the person he identifies as best qualified to serve a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. You’ll likely respond with a “duh,” that doesn’t tell us much. But my point is that Obama’s pragmatism will come to the fore - as not only his natural tendency when it comes to governing - but as a strategy.

    Here’s how that works. ………………………………//

    from the article:
That is what we are seeing played out right now with respect to a nomination to the Supreme Court. Republicans are questioning the very legitimacy of our current President to perform his Constitutional duties. That’s because the social order is changing (both in terms of cultural issues and demographics) and, for them, any form of resistance is justified.

Both Democrats and the media need to be clear about what is happening. Regardless of how often Republicans try to don the mantle of defending the Constitution, they are in the midst of attempting to undermine our democratic processes.

    from the article:
What we’re seeing with these two Senators is that whether they are part of the “establishment” (Ayotte) or tea party types (Johnson), they are ready to join the extremist insurgency in attempting to de-litigimize the Constitutional obligations of our current President. This will only get worse when he nominates a pragmatic choice for the Supreme Court. They’ll have no where to go but to the further reaches of extremism. That is the “Obama method” that I’ve sometimes referred to as conciliatory rhetoric as a ruthless strategy. We’ll have the opportunity to watch it play out once again over the next few months.

    • 111 57andfemale
      February 15, 2025 at 3:51 pm

I find it interesting that everyone seems to be missing the obvious: The GOP will be uber-motivated to vote if there is no successor to Scalia by election day - they want to see the end of Roe v. Wade, they want VRA completely overturned, they want assault rifles in their kitchens, and they want to reverse same sex marriage. McConnell, the RWNJ’s and the compliant MSM know exactly what they’re doing.
And what are we obsessed with? Process, precedent, nuanced thinking. When they are throwing hammers at our heads.

Will the Dems be equally motivated? God, I hope so. Because the strategy is to get the GOP to crawl over broken glass to vote for ANYONE who will fill that seat for the GOP. Even the few sane GOP who would otherwise be afraid of Trump or Cruz, will now vote for whomever this idiotic party nominates. I can only hope that Dems will now see the peril as well.
