From the bottom of the previous thread ….

As noted over the past couple of days, Trump is definitely NOT doing anything remotely supportive of the GOP, Republican Party and the GOP has no one even remotely capable of stopping the dude.

The real-time destruction of the Republican Party by a single individual is now literally ‘daily news’ … interesting & dangerous times, in_deed!

With the new relationship, wonder what happens to the law that says if Cuban refugees make it to our shores, they can stay? If that’s no longer an issue, maybe we can open up that status to other refugees. Just sayin’.

That, Pf, is the million dollar question. The next question is why do so many Democrats go along with this and not balk at the idea. I don’t think of him as a Democrat and I have a hard time thinking that the party will ever make him their nominee.

From Krugman’s excellent column today: http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/02/16/my-unicorn-problem/?_r=0

“What I and most of my wonk friends would like to see is what the late Robert Heilbroner used to call Slightly Imaginary Sweden — or these days, maybe Diversified Denmark. That is, a strong social safety net that protects everyone against avoidable misery, workers with substantial bargaining power, strong environmental policy; not an equalized society, not a Utopia, but someplace where basic decency is a fundamental principle.”

Thanks, 57. I love the idea of a place where “basic decency is a fundamental principle.” We seem to have abandoned that concept a long ago as too many people accept partisan hatred, exclusion, bigotry and injustice as acceptable norms.

Brave of him now but I wonder if he’ll backtrack under pressure. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that President Obama has the right to fill judicial vacancies for his entire term. Good on Steele for speaking out.

…a conservative senator from North Carolina is breaking with his colleagues and calling for the GOP to at least give consideration to a potential replacement.

Appearing on The Tyler Cralle Show on Tuesday morning, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) cautioned against vowing to automatically block any nominee.

“I think we fall into the trap if just simply say sight unseen, we fall into the trap of being obstructionists,? Tillis said.

      February 16, 2025 at 3:20 pm

I think Tyler and Steele understand failure of McConnell to abide by the Constitution violates the Constitution given that he took an oath of office to uphold it. And of course he looks like the racist and seditionist that he is.

    • 49 pkayden
      February 16, 2025 at 4:26 pm

We’ll see if Tillis does anything substantive when McConnell refuses to bring any of President Obama’s nominations to the Senate floor.

US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans
    POSTED:FEB 15 2016 07:02PM CST

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.

Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.

He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.

Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans.

Green says as a result, those attorneys and debt collectors are getting judgements in federal court and asking judges to use the US Marshals Service to arrest those who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

I think it’s people who have refused to make a payment plan including an income based plan which is very good. It is based on “disposable income.” I have one. They have always used private debt collectors. But using the US Marshall Service to go after people with student loans is pretty awful. They haven’t committed a crime unless of course student loan debt is now a crime.

After Exploiting CNBC Platform, Larry Kudlow Announces He Won’t Run For Senate

    http://mediamatters.org/blog/2016/02/16/after-exploiting-cnbc-platform-larry-kudlow-ann/208615

CNBC senior contributor Larry Kudlow has announced he will not run for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut. The announcement ends months of CNBC allowing Kudlow to misuse its platform to explore a run in what media veterans called “a straight-up conflict of interest.”

What Republicans Said About Supreme Court Nominations During George W. Bush’s Last Year

        http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2016/02/16/3749754/what-republicans-said-about-supreme-court-nominations-during-george-w-bushs-last-year/

        Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA)

“[The idea that July 2008 would trigger the] Thurmond Rule – that’s just plain bunk. The reality is that the Senate has never stopped confirming judicial nominees during the last few months of a president’s term.?

Today, Grassley says that “The fact of the matter is that it’s been standard practice over the last nearly 80 years that Supreme Court nominees are not nominated and confirmed during a presidential election year… it only makes sense that we defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court Justice.?

On Sunday, as news of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death a day earlier sparked questions about the protocol for filling his seat, radio host Alex Jones was tackling a more serious dilemma: What if Scalia was murdered?

“You just get used to this: ‘Scalia found, it’s natural, nothing going on here, he just died naturally,'” Jones said on his show. “Then you realize, Obama is just one vote away from being able to ban guns, open the borders, and actually have the court engage in its agenda and now Scalia dies. My gut tells me they killed him, and all the intellectual evidence lays it out.”

Conspiracy theories are Jones’ calling card, and they often bounce around right-wing radio without entering the political mainstream. But the day after Jones presented his theory, a much more powerful voice joined the conversation about a possible Scalia murder: Donald Trump.
