For 3-year-old Clark Reynolds, Thursday began like most others.
Morning preparations gave way to hours at school and then a visit to his mother’s office to change into a suit and tie. Clark’s mother, Nichole Francis Reynolds is a former congressional staffer who now works in the private sector. Friends had secured an invitation for Reynolds and her son to the White House’s Black History Month celebration, the final gathering of its kind while the first black president remains in office. But Francis Reynolds had only told Clark that he had earned a special treat. He is, after all, only 3.
What Clark does know is the president’s name, his face when he sees Obama on TV and the sound of President Obama’s voice when it comes through the satellite radio in his dad’s car…..

“Human walking carries a lot of energy,” Tom Krupenkin, a professor of mechanical engineering at UW-Madison says. “Theoretical estimates show that it can produce up to 10 watts per shoe, and that energy is just wasted as heat. A total of 20 watts from walking is not a small thing, especially compared to the power requirements of the majority of modern mobile devices.” From your phone to your tablet to just about anything that requires batteries for operation, Krupenkin and his colleague J. Ashley Taylor believe that this technology could be a game-changer in the energy space.

I finally watched this and I am sitting here crying as well. It is so hard to let go of someone who has been so good to us and for us, but the thing that helps most adults is that term limits are good when the alternative is someone like Shrub or any of the clownish politicians running for the office now. Loved PBO’s response to her (and how cool it is that he saw the video).

Can’t wait to read that story, Chips - thank you! Here are some of my random thoughts (lucky you).
One good thing about ol’ Bernie was (and I’m using past tense, only in my mind) that he seemed to push Hillary to either being just a touch more left (where I wanted her) or to “find her voice” a little bit earlier and better during her second run for president or to help create the set of circumstances that allowed her to fully embrace all of the President’s successes.
Not a big fan of people on twitter and elsewhere on social media who are trying to totally discount his 1960s equal rights creds, because every young white man who stood up at the time showed the courage of his convictions, unlike many, many (many) others. If there’s a big chunk of time in between his early creds and now and people want to call him out on that, so be it.
Many of his current positions sound good to me, and so do many of Hillary’s progressive ones. I guess that means I’m somewhat of a socialistic Democrat or a democratic Socialist, and “so be it” to that, too, but I prefer to just think of myself as an Obama Democrat all the way!
Bernie neglected checking on his campaign folks and leading his “supporters” in a positive way, during the last few months. He picked some surrogates (or they picked him) that I do not condone. I’m sure most of our grandmothers told us “You are the company you keep.” For this and a few other reasons (which I’ll keep to myself, because I fully respect anyone who’s still on the Sanders side), I’m going to start paying more attention to Hillary.
If Bill stays out of her way and, in particular, away from the cameras, this would all be more palatable for this Ridin’ with Biden voter. I’m not fully in Hillary’s court (’08 campaign did it for me, although I beat those feelings back when she was a stalwart member of the Obama administration, as SoS), but I’ll be a voter. Although I really want to write-in “JRB” on my primary ballot, I’ll just smile to myself about that, instead.
By the way, Hillary, why say you admire Gov. Cuomo’s $12-an-hour minimum wage standard, but can’t support the $15 figure? What’s that $3 to you? Do you have any idea what that means to people trying to hang on, in our economy? You and I will be talkin’ online, I can assure you!

JO’B, what I saw was Hillary Clinton pushing Bernie Sanders to the left on social issues, i.e, women’s rights, racial justice issues and sensible gun laws, particularly. He has lefty ideas about Wall Street, free college and single payer health insurance that are simply not workable, but seem attractive in sound bites. President Obama has said that being challenged in the primaries actually strengthens a candidate’s skills for the general, especially debating skills and in that sense the Sanders challenge has been good for Clinton.
The part about Sanders supporters that I find most difficult to accept is their constant undermining of President Obama and his achievements. If you support Bernie fine, but don’t it by vilifying the best president we have had in the last century. This isn’t just something I’ve read about, it’s something I actually witness (and endure) in Democratic meetings.

Here is the answer on minimum wage: there is ample evidence and studies on the positive effect of $12/h federal minimum. There is no evidence or studies on $15. To serious economists this matters. It could very well be that there is a point where too high a minimum wage could affect job and economic growth in lower income States and communities, whereas $12 is proven to help. Krugman and other liberal economists are making this point. It’s a huge deal for the experts who know something. We can accurately say that $12 is at the top of a federal minimum that will help workers and the economy. And we’re only talking about a federal minimum. States and communities can choose a higher minimum based on individual circumstances.

Thanks, Betsy. It’s really a complicated issue. Of course I want full time adult workers paying rent and supporting families to make a true living wage. But some reliable studies show that teens who need part time work experience will be pushed out of the work force if the minimum isn’t balanced. Some countries have a lower minimum for teens, a living wage for adults. And we’re talking a minimum here. Local living conditions must be taken into consideration
I agree; one size doesn’t fit all. I appreciate Hillary being honest here instead of giving in to the temptation of offering an easy answer. She’s learned that from PBO, I think.
She has definitely learned, and if MSN actually looked at her, she is a very different candidate. $12 would be a huge increase. I am an incremental it. See how changes work, and adjust. It’s stable and sane

I love it!!! For most young people, he has been the only President in their lifetime or who has memorable for them. I love that he is an example for them and has set a standard that I hope they hold others to when they are of voting age.
In many ways I am on the same level as this child with my feelings about Obama leaving office. Awhile back PBO did a speech or interview where he said similar things about being an active citizen for change right along side of us. Thinking of it from that perspective reinvigorated me.

I am starting to think Sanders’ campaign is beginning to mirror Cruz’s campaign tactics. The person at the top may not be able to control all of their supporter actions, but they certainly can influence them. Remember when Obama had hecklers at his rallies and the crowd would boo them and he would say “Don’t boo go vote!”?
Has Bernie tried ? The campaign reflects the top of the ticket and his/her ability to lead supporters. The reports of Sanders tactics are disturbing, and I continue to follow both camps on Twitter. Dirty is dirty, especially from someone who is holier than thou.
