Hi Chips. I just love Virginia McLaurin and it’s obvious she loves life. Guess that’s what it takes to live a long and happy one. She was born in 1910 when women were still wearing corsets, bustles and long skirts and couldn’t vote. What a tale she could tell!

        • February 22, 2025 at 7:36 am

My gawd, 1910 - the changes she has experienced in that time are just unimaginable. Look at her energy and joy for life, astonishing!

I would gladly sign up for any lessons she would give on how to live a long and joyful life. She’s obviously not let any of life’s aches and pains get her down. What a great role model she is.

I loved the juxtaposition of her statement that she was honored to be able to meet POTUS and FLOTUS with her just bursting out jubilance and freedom to dance for joy and say what she was thinking, have my eyes deceived me, we truly have a AA president and first lady. The she went back to her more subdued statements that she was there to celebrate black history month.

I love that FLOTUS noticed her nails because we women fix ourselves up and by God somewhere better notice. :) Also Virginia just gave the best video clip that ever existed for Michele’s pitch for moving and exercising. Wow.

Pretty good. Working on preventing more bladder stones in Kasper. And my beloved Nickelby seemed to get old overnight. We don’t know how old he is, he’s at least 11 but could be older. His cataracts are bad, and I so miss those beautiful hazel eyes. But he’s happy and busy and Pearl keeps them all in line!

                      Thanks for asking.

Enjoy them, they are family. It’s hard to see them get older. Ours are at their peak I hope. I don’t think I’ll ever get over two of the dogs we had before the two we have now. We raised one from the time he was ten days old. It was fun.

I do, for Kasper and Pearl. I still need to submit the claim on Kasper’s surgery. I cannot begin to tell you the Circle of Hell I live in, working for this sociopath. Or email so we can have serious conversations! My job is weird: My husband is a clock restorer of museum-quality clocks. I currently am doing research, writing books for a museum that will open - someday. This Richer-than-God sociopath that I work for has amassed a huge collection. But I kid you not, he is certifiable, unreasonable, listens to no one, and has the maturity, math and reading skills of a 5 year old. I should love what I do - art history was always a passion for me. But he makes it impossible to love what I do or do a good job at it. I also teach quilting. I was in theater for many years, but I don’t do that anymore. I have a very checkered work history.

Yes you should love what you do but the rich can be weird. It sounds like you have done many wonderful things. Everything sounds so interesting. Your husband too. I thought you made & taught quilting. I couldn’t remember for sure. My work history is bland office work.
Remember you have three beautiful dogs to come home too and of course hubby and the TOD family.
I’m doing ancestry now besides cleaning and inventory. Our old house needs it.

I woke up this morning still steaming over Susan Sarandon’s rudeness to Delores Huerta. I hope her tirade goes viral and turns off millions of Latino voters from the Bernie campaign. Why isn’t Sarandon directing all that righteous anger at Donald Trump? Or, does she reserve her arrogance for octogenarian civil rights icons?

    • 30 Don
      February 22, 2025 at 8:17 am

Of course Susan Sarandon went off, just like Bernie’s bros she believes that if you don’t vote for Sanders then you’re blind or you don’t know what’s going on or you don’t know what’s good for you. At this point I’m so sick and tired of Bernie and his shtick, he was cute when he was getting post offices renamed, now he’s turning in a real ball-breaker.

        February 22, 2025 at 9:18 am

I am seriously tired of being told I am defective or stupid or a RW troll because I think Bernie cannot win and/or if he did, he would be a terrible POTUS. He stokes anger and chaos, which is no way to run a country. He cares nothing for FP and is simplistic about in this complex world. I purposely keep Bernie supporters in my TL so I know what they are doing and saying, but their childish insults reflect the pettiness and simplistic view of their candidate, who damn well should know better. This is getting ugly.

We know the term ‘mansplaining.’ Well how about a new one. Sandersplaining, liberalsplaining, entitledsplaining. I don’t know. Why did Sarandon accost her like that. I considered it verbal abuse. It was as if Sarandon knew all and Delores Huerta was too obtuse to have read what the relevant facts were.

I truly hate to think of all the battles that could have been won in the past if it were not for the ‘disappointeds’. How many times did they direct friendly fire at those on the front lines, how many times did they remove their support at a critical juncture? Just another reason to be so thankful for the model we are seeing in the President’s behavior. His continued respect, empower, include model brings voices and talented leaders forward from within a constituency and also helps coalitions form based on respect and mutual concern.

      • 33 jackiegrumbacher
        February 22, 2025 at 8:45 am

Yes, catrst. It was President Obama’s directive to his campaign staff-“Respect, Empower, Include”-that kept running through my mind through Sarandon’s tirade. The tone of a campaign starts at the top and is reinforced at every level. Sarandon showed us in vivid colors just what kind of disrespectful message is originating at the top in the Sanders campaign.

        • 34 catrst
          February 22, 2025 at 11:02 am

This was when I started to have hope that Hillary Clinton understood the tone and model of the Obama administration and wanted to emulate it in this very regard. When I read that she was including voices from a diverse staff and pool of volunteers and when I saw no sign that Clinton supporters were returning in kind to the Sanders crowd. When I visited the infamous Dkos site and saw Clinton diaries they were sticking to the facts, and reporting positive developments (without gloating). There simply was no drama coming from that campaign. Now the Sanders folks deny reality and say only the Clinton campaign is negative but they are also creating a straw man fallacy out of the opposing candidate as well so their credibility is shot. When I saw the Sarandon tirade, good word for it by the way, I was sure I han’t imagined this vast difference in approach. When the disappointeds decided they had nothing worthwhile to learn from President Obama they failed to understand the respect, empower, include model. When someone isn’t yelling, in their mind, they are not getting anywhere. Well they are wrong.

However, if Hillary Clinton is consistant in her understanding of the model, she will find a way to make a positive out of the Sanders campaign. I don’t mean manipulation but using the momentum and ideas that people care so much about and include them as soon as they are open to it. From the pivot Hillary made at the Democratic convention in 2008 to work with the nominee, I have no doubt that she will start building connections as soon as the primary is complete.

I agree. I thought I saw that in Clinton’s speech after she was declared the winner. She really tried to reach out to the Sanders’ supporters, especially young people. I like her plan regarding student debt for students who already, now, have lots of debt (like my 3 children). It’s very important than free college down the road.

                February 22, 2025 at 7:36 pm

She wants to have students refinance and consolidate their debt at a lower rate and forgiven after 20yrs (or 15, not sure). She wants them to be able to do it as soon as she can get that passed or if she can do it by executive order (not sure about that EO part). She wants to provide National Service jobs for students that will forgive their debt if they start businesses or work in under serviced areas.

Couldn’t agree more. I think the Bernie backers are going to mightily disappointed come SC and then Super Tuesday, so the whining about super delegates will get even more strident. We can’t afford to have them sit out the vote in November or go third party!

      Thanks, DesertFlower. A good read.

I have no personal grudge against Sanders except for a profound displeasure at his rants against the sitting Democratic President who, as he conceded once, has received a portfolio of ills and crises like none other before him, yet still was able to take the country back on a path of positive recovery.

If the article measures up, Sanders’s momentum and, thus, his revolution, will reach a full stop by March 15. The sooner, the better so that the unification of the Democratic base (which includes some of these independent thinkers and purist progressives à-la-Sanders) can begin. But I will confess that he and his ardent supporters (like Nina Turner) were a bit too much for my taste.

    GM TODville.

Yesterday amk asked about winner-take-all delegates in GOP primaries.

Less than a month from now, we’ll know a lot more than we do now, with the crucial date being the Ides of March.

    Here’s a run-down on how GOP apportions delegates, from @latimes Jan 7:
“All states holding primaries March 1 to 15 — which includes Super Tuesday — must award delegates proportionally to candidates who clear a certain threshold (between 5% and 20% of the vote). Before that change, states had a winner-take-all option; now they don’t.

Why is this change so important? Because nearly half the national delegates will be selected during this two-week window.”

    snip /

“All of which sets the stage for a final battle on June 7. California’s 172 delegates — 14% of the total needed to win the nomination and the most of any state — will be awarded winner-take-all. Four other states will elect 131 (mostly) winner-take-all delegates that day. That makes California the state with the biggest haul at potentially the most important moment in the race.”

    Here’s a link to the @latimes article:

      GE amk.

Don’t know, but think Dem delegates are allocated proportionally for each precinct within the state with bonus delegates arbitrarily awarded by state. But am pretty sure that Dems no longer offer winner-take-all option, which was how CA awarded delegates on that awful night that RFK was killed. :(

On a lighter note from Saturday, LOL:

Thanks. That’s what I thought. If hillz keeps pulling in these kindsa squeak-by margins (yes, I know, I know, we have had only 3 so far), I see how gets the required no. of delegates without SD’s putting up their collective thumbs. She is gonna need 20% margins at least to get that magic no.

The comment couldn’t be more true.

The GOP has resorted to distortions, twists, and flat out lies at times when campaigning and even more so in their collective attempt to delegitimize, stop, and bring down President Obama.

I will never forget the emergence of the T-Baggers in February 2009 with so many low info voters (with a rampant disease of bad spelling) descended on DC to almost pull Obama out from the WH if the police would let them.

From then on, it was a cynical propaganda supported by mega-networks and lunatic radio personalities against everything the Democrats tried to accomplish. Even when POTUS began to reign in the increasingly high costs of healthcare, the President was met with derision and brutal attacks at every step of the way. I do remember “pre-existing conditions”, something that sent many families into bankruptcies when not sending victims to death pure and simple.

The Rethugs told their base that everything done in Washington was bad. Washington itself became a dirty word, as did compromise, which was a science that Boehner could no longer apply. Working with the President even on issues or even programs the GOP wanted was anathema. Attending one of his state dinners? No way. Should one’s picture shaking hands with POTUS surface on the Net, the angry GOP base will attack its elected official as a RINO or a COMPROMISER. I remember with sadness how Gov. Bobbie Jindal tried to dodge the camera on a visit POTUS made after the BP leak. Civility against this POTUS was a crime in the GOP world.

Now, after drinking for 7 years the Kool-Aid infected with the anti-Washington, anti-establishment, anti-compromise, the base wants nothing to do with its own maker, the so-called Conservative GOP. It prefers to run to a full-blown demagogue, a man with no moral but with an ego the size of his belly; a man whose mouth should have a filter to prevent decent ears being attacked by the profanity he says against anyone who “doesn’t like him”.

The base is too drunk for the GOP elite to talk some sense to. It wants nothing more than more Trump.

It’s harvest time: the Rethugs are harvesting the fruits of the bad seeds they planted. I hope the Republican Convention proudly display ‘WE BUILT THAT”.

Hollywood has an “epidemic of invisibility” for women, minorities and LGBT people that runs across the whole industry, a new study has suggested.

The report by the University of Southern California stated that Hollywood has an “inclusion crisis” from CEOs to minor characters.

“Overall, the landscape of media content is still largely whitewashed,” the study concluded.

It comes days ahead of the Oscars, which has been dubbed OscarsSoWhite.

The lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations led Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith to boycott the ceremony and Oscars head Cheryl Boone Isaacs to pledge to double the number of female and minority members of the Academy.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-35629523

So, they needed a ‘study’ to tell us that?

Republican Marco Rubio’s presidential run has drawn more money from Wall Street donors than any other candidate, according to a Reuters review of campaign finance disclosures, shoring up his position as his party’s establishment alternative to front-runner Donald Trump.

The U.S. senator from Florida has received more than $4 million from the employees of banks and investment firms like Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) since launching his bid for the presidency last year, according to the analysis of individual donations totaling more than $200 each. So true.

LOVE her chiffon dress, as a child would have longed for as my Easter dress.

Easter was my favorite holiday as a child. Though basically a tomboy, loved getting new floral fancy dresses every year. And also loved Easter hats, was convinced I’d always wear a hat when I grew up, LOL.

        from the essay:
We’ll probably never truly be able to measure the impact that President Barack Obama has had on our children. As we enter the final year of his presidency, we will cherish and hold onto the great moments of progress and accomplishment.

Yep, the media in the US has devolved into a Hallelujah chorus for the GOP. Anything approach actual fact based journalism died out long ago. Maybe there’s a media cemetery somewhere with a monument to a forgotten profession.

She hits it out of the park:

And so they capitalized on how Sarah Palin had defined the “real [read: white] America” and the idea that Barack Hussein Obama had “palled around with terrorists.” That led to everything from the birther movement to death panels to the whole of idea that this President was actually a Kenyan socialist. In other words, to rally their base behind the strategy of total obstruction, these Republican leaders fanned the flames of fear and anger.

Good West Coast morning Chipsticks & TOD family.
Just look at the pure joy that 106 year old Miss Virginia is expressing! Now think what her life as a black woman in America has been. God bless her. I’m glad she got to see a black President and First Lady.

On another note. Hillary has 500 delegates and Bernie has 70. And he was a little upset that the folks at the black church he was speaking at yesterday kept going to the buffet table while he was speaking 😄😄😄😄😄

Shocking! I thought for sure Bernie’s tales of adventure detailing his time with the Black Panthers would have surely had his audience’s attention.

I remember then candidate Barack Obama early days on the campaign trail, I remember his close friendships with Republican Senators like Dick Luger. I remember the both of them co-authoring bills together when they were in the Senate, and they both shared the same concerns about nuclear weapons ending up in the wrong hands. I have no idea what has happened to the Republican Party, they don’t seem to have any honor. It seems as though their party has been taken over by a bunch of megalomaniacs.

I fondly remember PBO knowing something about FP and caring about it. The non-proliferation bill with Lugar earned him unqualified respect from Lugar, and others.

Conservatives: Court nominee must be stopped at all costs
    02/22/16 06:00 AM EST

Conservative leaders are sending a blunt message to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: The Supreme Court is more important than your majority.

McConnell’s (R-Ky.) top priority since becoming majority leader last year has been to put his colleagues in a strong position to win reelection, in part by showing that Republicans can govern.

But bottling up President Obama’s nominee to replace the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia could bring the work of the chamber to a screeching halt, if Democrats choose to retaliate.

Conservatives say that’s the risk McConnell has to take.
