It is. I made the mistake of reading some of the tweets back to him, and I’m so disgusted.
Wow, Nerdy! This post got me like…
:-D
:)
Wow!
https://twitter.com/ReignOfApril
“Only 14 men and women of color have won Oscars over the last 88 years, so it’s no wonder the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag has become a phenomenon. “The hashtag came about very organically,” explains April Reign, who started it. “I was sitting in my room watching the nominations and was just so disappointed with the lack of representation of people of color and marginalized communities in the major categories. So the very first tweet was ‘Oscars so white they ask to touch my hair.’ And it just sort of took off from there.” By day, Reign works as the managing editor of BroadwayBlack.com and the editor-at-large of NU Tribe magazine, so she’s all too familiar with the way actors of color are underrepresented on stage and screen. But she also notes that #OscarsSoWhite isn’t just about Hollywood’s tendency to overlook nonwhite talent: “Sir Ian McKellen said recently that there hadn’t been any [openly] gay men who have won Oscars in the major acting categories, and yet there have been straight men who have won Oscars for playing gay men. Similarly, a movie like Tangerine that was about two trans women was overlooked by the Academy, and yet Eddie Redmayne received a nomination for playing a trans woman in The Danish Girl. It’s not just a race issue. It’s also a sexual-orientation issue and a gender issue, and an issue for the differently abled as well.”…..
….April believes the hashtag has brought about some change, with the Academy announcing plans to create a checks-and-balances system to make sure inclusiveness becomes a priority. When I asked her what moviegoers could do, she said, “Everyone should broaden their horizons and see a movie that may make them uncomfortable or that doesn’t show someone that looks like them onscreen. That could be anything. That could be Tangerine or Creed or Beasts of No Nation or any one of the myriad of films that are available that provide different perspectives.” Clearly, there’s no better time for both the Academy and moviegoers to pressure Hollywood for films that reflect the diversity, beauty, and nuance of all people.”
Impressive for the period in history.
Very!
Of course, Jake has blocked me.
By the way, HIllary retweeted this!
Thanks for sharing that, Dudette! Even ol’ Andrea Mitchell is bringing up the rear:
Note the “Clinton” vs “Bernie” in Mitchell’s tweet. Should be Hillary & Bernie or Sanders and Clinton - but no - she has to use the friendlier option against Sec Clinton. I hate the US politial media like I should never hate anyone.
Don’t let ’em get you down. (Actually, Andrea’s always been “in the bag” for Hillary, so not sure why she referred to her that way.) The thing that gets me, which I also try not to let get me, is that the media always is so respectful to Trump, using “Mr. Trump,” ad nauseum. I realize he has no other title, like most of them, but giving him any respect is too much.
I noticed that about Trump as well - maybe they scared he will sue them - pffft
Mrs Greenspan was for Hillary when the latter lost to PBO. Does not seem to have been that way this election cycle. I just find them so rude - not sure when we lost the will to call all people by their titles.
I do let them get me down - silly I guess - as it will impact the US much more than me in the future. We have our own RW issues.
Good luck with your issues, too. I’m guessing you concentrate on ours, to forget your own! Hang in there.
:) Ours don’t look so bad when lined up next to the GOP
I’d divert your eyes from ours, then, and just concentrate on the Democrats! Save yourself.
My eyes are attuned to PBO - not sure where to look come January :)
Major difference between PBO and all the others - despite massive searching by the GOP & the media, near impossible to find a picture of him scowling or screaming. He was brought up to smile in response to anything that was thrown at him. Just a wonderful amazing man.
That, he definitely is!!! <3

OK, I just wanted to see Chris Rock’s monologue….time for some Walking Dead.

Maybe later. Thanks.
I was redirected to this post by our ROCK on twitter … which reminded me to head over to the Oscars to see how Chris Rock was handling “things.” His monologue called attention to the lack of diversity … very well done, I thought. He didn’t shy away from it. Then I noticed two or three of the early commercials had black actors and actresses in ’em. Then back to Chris who mentioned the lack of diversity again, and then intro’d some quite funny take-offs on what some films would look like IF they had any black actors or actresses in them. And, of course, many presenters are people of color. Guessing he’ll keep it up as a running theme throughout the broadcast, too.
If nothing else, many, many Hollywood types are being highly embarrassed out in the open, in front of these cameras, and maybe the Academy will mend its 1950s ways. Another thought I had would be for every white actor or actress being given a contract in Hollywood in future should first ask the question: what’s the diversity level in this, from camera person to director to cast members and beyond. As Chris Rock mentioned, there are plenty of liberals in Hollywood and we all know they could stand to have a dose of reality hit them in the face, and tonight’s a good fresh start. My take, anyway.
GE JO’B.
Glad you’re a night owl, so you may see this response.
#OscarsSoWhite is the number one topic of conversation here in LA.
Local all-news radio @knx1070 aired a 2-hour discussion last week with various people in the industry — which I didn’t hear, but common sense (and having lived in the LA area for 40 years) tells me that Hollywood has a variety of problems.
1) Financing films that have little chance of scoring during domestic opening week, which then creates buzz and allows theaters to book movie for longer than a week or two.
SOLUTION
Hollywood producers need to get on board and realize that FOREIGN revenue is just as important as domestic (but require them to actually be creative and accept risk). There’s a huge audience for diverse casts but Hollywood refuses to their MSM POV (white as default) blinders off.
Recall reading that films with non-white casts are more popular abroad (duh) than those with all-white casts.
2) Unimaginative “creative” types
“Creative” these days means CGI and little else. Hollywood’s echo chamber means they believe there’s no market for non-action (i.e., bloody… yuck) or silly comedy films. It’s gauzy history to them that compelling stories endure forever (e.g., Casablanca, Sound of Music, Dr Zhivago, Babette’s Feast, etc.) and when such films are made these days, they lose their simplicity and nuance, thus end up over-the-top, jumping the shark.
3) Hollywood thinks ideas from foreign sources are cool, but need to be tweaked to be presented from #WhitePrivilege POV.
Case-in-point, article published over a year ago, but we know nothing has changed…
P.S. Full disclosure: I rarely see films any more, and have zero connection to The Industry. Just my opinion, take with a grain of salt.
That was so in-depth and interesting, I almost asked if you were, indeed, part of the industry! Thank you for your on-the-ground report, fascinating and disheartening at the same time. And, y es, I’m a night owl, so I enjoyed seeing that.
Since I’m posting so late, considering reposting tomorrow when it’s not the witching hour.
Since I’m Japanese-American, I know I’m biased, but frustrating to me that Hollywood thinks nothing of taking Japanese masterpieces (e.g., Akira Kurosawa/Toshiro Mifuni’s Rashomon) and recasting with European-Americans without even a token Asian in the cast — Clint Eastwood and George Lucas have both admitted that they were influenced by KurosawaMifuni but few here are aware of their influence.
I know nothing about The Last Airbender, but would it have killed M. Night Shyamalan to cast at least one Asian in that Japanese/Inuit-themed movie? Think it might have done better box office overseas if he had.
And last year there was the movie Aloha where Cameron Crowe cast Emma Stone as a Chinese-Hawaiian woman. :(
Why do they continue to do that???!!! It’s the 21st century, and - I swear - sometimes it seems as though we’ve learned NOTHING from or about each other. {{{Hugs to you}}}
Great tweets! I am amazed at the tweet on Marshawn Lynch, that he saved every penny of his salary as an NFL player. Good for him! I wish him a happy retirement.

Chris Rock’s monologue and now back to #JusticeForFlint

Be still, my freakin’ heart.
He’s gonna introduce Lady Gaga’s performance, right?
Yes. Only reason I’m still watching!
Maybe, we can get a video of VP Biden introducing Lady Ga Ga at some point. I am not watching the show.
I’m sure it’ll be available soon!
They gave him a standing ovation. I am crying from his speech and Lady GaGa’s performance with the survivors. So powerful I love Joe Biden.
Thank you for the Twitter truths.
OMG. Angela Basset did another Black History Month Minute on the Oscars. Too funny. It’s a poke in the Academy’s eye, every time.
OMG. Not winning the award for graphic artistry. #TakeItDown
Can’t unsee that mouth.
Sorry!
Well, at least it’s representative of his attitude; angry all the time.
He actually looks like he’s screaming in that picture. Is that supposed to have been done by a supporter, that looks down right creepy!
I love Shonda! QUEEN!!!
Ladies & Gents your two leading candidates for the GOP nomination:
Candidate Marco took it on the road
Writing Trump one-liners from a commode
The camera would follow
But his jokes all seemed hollow
So he and the porta potty got towed.
LP I laughed so hard that I have a headache. If this wasn’t so serious it would make a great comedy show.
My sentiments exactly, Donna!
I have no opinion of the “Mad Max” movie, never saw it. But right now, this Oscars has become the “Mad Max” show and it’s become quite tedious and boring. Anyone with me on that?
I saw it. Only went because of all the hype, which I believe was a bit overrated. For me it was okay, but I don’t think of it as best picture worthy. It was just okay to me. Lots of violence, lots of explosions, people in weird steam punk outfits. Ho hum.
Yes! Most definitely agree! o_O
HuffPo Black Voices twitter account is posting history of nominations and wins by black artists and crew in each category. Pretty cool!
I was listening to this preacher afew minutes ago and he was talking about the election, who to vote for. On one hand this gay marriage thing which is important to him, on the other hand you have someone running around talking about making America great again. He goes on to say please tell me one thing, when was America ever great. Was they great when they took the land from the Indians, were they great when they built this country on the backs of slaves, were they great when blacks were 3/5 of a human being, were they great when blacks suffer through jim crow. Where they great when 100 cops show up to the funeral for a police dog, but not one for Tamir Rice funeral.I had to clap my hands and shout.
