Chips, try spreading a little grease, like Crisco, on the bottom of your pan and then wiping it off quickly. Try this several times. When you cook something, make sure there is that thin layer of grease or oil between your food and the rusty stuff. This has always worked for me.
Chips, what’s the pan made of? If it’s cast iron, it has to be seasoned. This means applying cooking oil to it over time (after each time it’s washed) until it has penetrated deeply and not using a lot of dish soap when washing. Always dry it completely over heat on the stove. Don’t let water sit in it.
If it’s stainless steel, it should not rust at all!
Thanks a mill Meta! I think one of them (the much older one) is cast iron, the newer one (which I dumped) looked like stainless steel - but it went completely rusty after only a few weeks. I most probably didn’t read the instructions (blush), but I will most definitely follow your washing instructions when I buy a new one. You’re a star, thanks a gazillion!
You can always salvage the cast iron, too. Just give it a really good scrubbing to remove all the rust particles. And then go ahead and season it. It will take awhile, though. Rust won’t kill you, it’s just oxidized iron. But any trace of it will make your food taste ugly.
For your next purchase, be sure to ask if it’s carbon steel or stainless steel. Stainless steel is better but remember don’t put pans in the dishwasher. Wash by hand with a soapy sponge and rinse. Hope you find a good pan!!
