TGIF, everyone. Got an email from The Oregonian that they are going to print my letter to the editor about the Supreme Court nominee in the Sunday paper. Amazed and pleased.
Wow - how great! Not sure you’ve mentioned that before and I missed it, but I’m so glad for you. (I just wish the Prez had invited me to Cuba. Would love to go there some day.)
Since you’ve decided that the Senate will not fulfill its Constitutional responsibility of voting on a US Supreme Court nominee to fill a vacancy on the Court, may be it’s time for the Senate to close down for business, and for senators to stop being paid, because it’s an election year. This would save the American people -tax payers- millions of dollars! Senators can reconvene on Jan. 5, 2017 and then work for three years until Jan. 2020. And since 2020 will be an election year, neither the President nor the Senate will be obligated to work to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities. And you Mitch must stop acting as a Majority Leader (that is if the Republicans are still in the majority) because your six year term in office ends in 2020!
Hokulea voyaging canoe continues on its round-the-world journey, beginning in Hawaii, and now making an historic stop in Cuba!
‘Hokulea crew members are schedule to be in Cuba for four days. During the visit, the crew will tour Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and join a meeting aimed at strengthening U.S-Cuba relations.
The Hokulea’s stop in Cuba coincides with President Barack Obama’s historic visit to the country. Obama is scheduled to arrive in Cuba on Sunday. ‘
My grandfather was in love with her, according to my grandmother, in the 1950s. But I’ve told that story before on TOD, so I’ll move on. Plus, her STEM story is so much better! Ha! <3

Uncovering the Reality of Stereotype Threat
While conducting research for my paper, I learned about stereotype threat for the first time. Stereotype threat is described as “the immediate situational threat that derives from the broad dissemination of negative stereotypes about one’s group; the threat of possibly being judged and treated stereotypically, or of possibly self-fulfilling such a stereotype.” Once I learned about this social phenomenon, I immersed myself in stereotype threat literature. I wondered if stereotype threat contributed to the opportunity cost Wulf described. Could stereotype threat explain why women are not persisting in engineering?
The more I learned, the more I was convinced that it had influenced my own life: In 1998, I left graduate school without earning the doctorate in materials science and engineering I had been seeking. Leaving the doctoral program was a personal decision that had left me depressed and defeated. With a newfound understanding of stereotype threat, I wondered if my earlier departure from graduate school was really a personal choice. According to Nilanjana Dasgupta, social psychologist at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, “What feels like a free choice to pursue one life path or ‘possible self’ over another is often constrained by subtle cues in achievement environments that signal who naturally belongs there and is most likely to succeed and who else is a
I saw the movie Big Eyes that was so sad that her husband who was a so-so artist stole her God given talent so that her art could be appreciated only because he was a male.
Hey Dudette, thank you so much for sharing the story of Madam C.J. Walker, She was an extraordinary woman! She encouraged Black women to be self-sufficient. The Walker building in Indianapolis, built by her daughter A’lelia Walker, to fulfill her mother’s dream, played such a crucial role in improving the lives of African Americans.

Not sure, but I think Trump is already speaking at his hate rally in Utah, and CNN isn’t airing the entire thing. That would be a first. Ugh.

I saw the movie Big Eyes that was so sad that her husband who was a so-so artist stole her God given talent so that her art could be appreciated only because he was a male.
I saw it too. Really made me sad AND angry. What a world this would be if women are able to shine without men so often being threatened by it.
