Cuban family I watched @POTUS speech with was cheering, tearing up, truly moved. No one has given a speech like here that in a long time.

“HAVANA — In her apartment a few blocks from the theater where President Obama addressed the Cuban people Tuesday, Marta Limas and her family gathered around the television, opposite a faded shrine to Saint Lazarus, the healer. The baby was crying. They turned up the volume. “What a handsome man,” said Limas, 56, as Obama began, and quickly settled into a rhythm. No one had spoken to the Cuban people with this kind of cadence in years. Limas and her family followed his words, rapt, as if listening to a sermon. Obama called for change. “Yes, change!” the family repeated. Obama talked the future. “The future!” they said. Of all the U.S. president’s activities during his groundbreaking visit to Cuba, the speech was his best chance to speak directly to Cubans, both here on the island and abroad. It wasn’t delivered in public, but it was broadcast in its entirety on Cuban state television, into the homes of many Cubans who, like Limas, talked about this visit as a turning point in their lives…”

…The family hushed and seemed to hold their breath when Obama’s words directly challenged their leaders, especially as the U.S. president called for democratic elections and urged President Raul Castro not to “fear the different voices of the Cuban people.” They admired his willingness to acknowledge the shortcomings and imperfections of the U.S. political system, and to have confidence in it anyway….Watching the family’s response to the U.S. president was somewhat like watching starry-eyed young Obama supporters at a speech during his 2008 campaign, before Americans grew accustomed to hearing him. Limas and her family were not. That the U.S. president is African American also made an impression on the Afro-Cuban family. “He’s a beautiful black man,” said Limas, when her husband stepped out of the room…continued”
Howdy, Tally! It is a beautiful perspective….made you feel like you were a Cuban experiencing the speech in their home…while sitting in front of the same T.V.
I watch the game on ESPN. I saw when POTUS went to greet Rachel Robinson and he call FLOTUS over to greet her too. And the guy announcing the game had a nice interview with Rachel Robinson.
Having a conversation on the last thread all by myself :-)
Bringing over my questions and comments:
Just watched the opening ceremonies on the YouTube that Chips provided (waited to watch it on my TV for a bigger picture). Sooooo bummed/pissed that ESPN did not open the whole game up so that this history could be viewed by everyone! Ah well, the downside of capitalism :-)
Glad that I didn’t have to hear any commentary on that Chips-provided YouTube though. Seeing PBO come in and Pete Souza following and the faces in the crowd (one guy pointing to his NYC baseball cap when he noticed he was on camera) was exciting, but I was totally moved when I heard the Star Spangled Banner being sung, as our flag flew over the stadium and I could see our POTUS and FLOTUS singing along….. IN CUBA! What an amazing day!
Q: On a side note: Does anyone know the significance of the little kids walking in with the baseball players? That seemed kind of weird to me.
Two more questions for those watching the game:
Q: I read that PBO left at the 4th inning. Do you think that was planned or that there was an emergency? (I’m guessing planned by the title of this new thread :-) )
Hay Trump, President Castro came to see the President and his family off. It was planned for POTUS to leave because the announcers said that POTUS would be leaving early.
This is weird! I keep trying to leave a comment here and it’s not showing up. Fourth time is the charm? Either that or four versions of this comment will end up here later :-)
Dudette, I was going to put a longer clip but figured no one else but me would want to watch it, so went with the shorter version.
McConnell’s an idiot. VP Biden already stated that he allowed a hearing and a vote on ALL nominees despite any objections. That’s what the “Biden Rule” defenders fail to understand.
Even if McConnell’s spin on what V-P Biden said were true - which it isn’t - is no reason for McConnell to play a kid’s tit for tat game.
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land, has been so for a couple of centuries, and there are 9 Justices for a reason.
And I’m thinking the GOP reporter just had to add “who didn’t greet Obama at the airport”. Apart from anything else the lack of respect by using “Obama” is off the planet disgusting.
Thanks for the fusion link yesterday to the article on Michelle meeting with young Cuban women :) . I sent a tweet, since I think you’re not on Twitter.
Mark Knoller says it’s an 8 hour flight, so ETA around midnight EDT.
Flight to Buenos Aires is 4,252 miles. About 8 hours. @POTUS can watch end of Rays/Cuba game on satellite downlink. pic.twitter.com/TJTyxA5TXO
Thanks Meta! I want the US to win, so the haters here at home won’t have any excuse to hate on this game, but I also want to be polite guests. Cubans take their baseball seriously; they will not be happy with that score! Yikes!
Yeah, it was obvious to me when I read PBC’s comments that he was referring to the Repubs’ obstructionism. Such a shame that the BS campaign picked up on a RW out-of-context outrage machine generator.
It reminds me of when FLOTUS commented during the 2008 campaign that “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country” and the same folks got all outraged with that, ignoring the context and the rest of the quote which was, “because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.” We all knew what she meant, but that didn’t stop the press and the RW from turning into the controversy/outrage du jour.
It’s EXACTLY the same situation, Madame Soph. I found it ironic that, for the first time, BS was complimentary about PBO’s job creation, but only to pummel Hillary with it. What a jackass.
Thank you so much to our dynamic duo, Chips and Nerdy for the top-notch coverage (as usual) of our First Family’s historical trip to Cuba and, to all of your regulars.
What a Legacy - the only President who succeeded in restoring the US relationship with Cuba is the 44th President of the united States, Barack Hussein Obama. I admire so much that he walks in his own path to make the world a better place.
:star:
Thanks Pamela!!!
Hi Tally! Congrats on first! Good to see ya!
Thanks Dudette!
Hey Tally, are you still involved in signing up people for the ACA here in SoCal?
yes. email me : tally @ ppi-ins DOT com
Will do; it’s actually for a friend of Bill’s so I might get him to email you instead, is that ok?
Back later
Bye, sweetie pie!
Thanks for the link, Queen! You Rock! :-D
<3
Tally - congrats! The Obama family did us proud in Cuba as they do all over the world! Safe journey to Argentina.
Thanks! Yeah - so awesome seeing them there!!!!
wow………i did not know they were going to Argentina…
wait… did we ever get a pic of PBO in a Guayabera shirt?

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!! :D :D :D

Wonderful account of the response of the Cuban people to our President.
I watch the game on ESPN. I saw when POTUS went to greet Rachel Robinson and he call FLOTUS over to greet her too. And the guy announcing the game had a nice interview with Rachel Robinson.
Preach!
Love POTUS who used his arm to prevent FLOTUS’s dress from misbehaving because of the wind.
No Child Left Behind, You saw that too.
Yep saw that. That’s a good husband right there.
That was fast!
Some awesome pics:
Rachel Robinson, Marian Robinson & President Obama:
WOW!!!!! Makes me so happy!
Had to tweet that one! <3 <3 <3

Trump? I don’t pay any attention to what that clown says. I was just wondering why he left, but I see now that is was planned.
Raul Castro is standing around watching the plane taxi on the runway. Wow! Somebody <3's our President! :-D
Yeah, Raul just witnessed this :-) :
Hahaha! Didn’t even have to click on it! That is my most favorite baseball movie moment EVER! -)
How cool would it have been to hear that music played at the stadium today! :-D :-D :-D
They cut that clip too short. Here’s a longer one!
Dudette, this also is one of my favorite movies. I still cry at this scene.
Randy Newman outdid himself on that music. It was absolute PERFECTION!

I don’t think he wanted PBO to go!! LOLz.
Yep! :-)
Well….that’s a way to put it :-)

actually, I’m pretty sure it’s a tiny little thing :)
Wheels up!! :)
:D :D :D
That’s what I was giggling about on the last thread. They are sooo cute!
This is sooo funny! Michelle is like, “Boy, you need to leave me alone.”; or “Boy, you play too much.”
WOW…when Meteor Blades of Old Orange is lauding POTUS’ speech….
GA TODville.
Whew. Whirlwind tour of Havana is behind us, but PBO bequeathed both countries a memorable and historic speech this morning.
Looks like FLOTUS and Mrs. Robinson have similar shoes on (Michelle’s more silver, Mrs. Robinson’s more gold?).
Susanne cracked me up last night when she commented on my tweet (hat tip to annieb.) about FLOTUS meeting girls in Cuba — “the shoes!”
So I sent a followup tweet for all Obot shoe-lovers, ;)
Forgot to mention that Raul Castro looked like he didn’t want Michelle to go, LOL.
One more tweet:
I’m thinking that’s some L-O-V-E! You don’t do that with people you’re glad to see leave.
Hi Dudette,
I would say it was quite impressive and he looked genuinely happy.
Hey WilTal! It was and he truly did!
And I’m thinking the GOP reporter just had to add “who didn’t greet Obama at the airport”. Apart from anything else the lack of respect by using “Obama” is off the planet disgusting.
What time will they arrive in Argentina?
GE annieb.

TODers watching the game:
Still wondering what the score is/was (is the game still going?)
What was the significance of the little kids walking out with the baseball players?
Hey, they’re looking the airport departure on the Cuban live stream. Watch it again before it’s gone! :-)
3-0 Rays
Oops, sorry: 4-0 Rays, top of the 8th.
Wow! Shouldn’t they put second string by now? Let’s not embarrass the hosts too badly. :-)
I’m feeling kinda the same way. But I guess a game’s a game!
Thanks Meta! I want the US to win, so the haters here at home won’t have any excuse to hate on this game, but I also want to be polite guests. Cubans take their baseball seriously; they will not be happy with that score! Yikes!

Thanks again for all that y’all do every day.
As someone who, at times, feels like keeping her hormones in balance is like juggling colored balls at the circus, that was hilarious!
Score is now 4-1 Rays. Cuba has a man in scoring position on 2nd base.
Only 1 out, bottom of the 9th inning. A bunch of people left around. I bet they’e sorry.
Rays win 4-1. At least it wasn’t a shutout for the home team. :-)
Birthday Girl is back!! Let’s get this place rockin’!!
